I need your thoughts
ironworkerboomer replied to PDXsubaru's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Welcome. This is a laundry list of questions, and the right place to get answers. 79 is slow a weber will help but it wont be a speed racer these were built when 55 MPH was the norm but in my opinion still a blast to drive. Sloppy shifter Mr. GD has that fix here http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/84045-new-fix-for-4-speed-shifter-slop/ I did this to my brat and loved the outcome. As far as appearance thats to each his or her own. You are in the best place to find pieces and parts for your wagon there was a bajillion sold (yes that is the actual amount) in Portland. Oh and the search button is your friend on this site. Happy hunting. -

rim back space change
ironworkerboomer replied to ironworkerboomer's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Thanks. I was thinking of the 13 into the 14 rim but just wouldn't work with these. I had a set of walamette wheels for my 85 lego back in the 90's my buddy worked there and built me a setof 14's. I searched and they went out of buisness awhile ago. -

Welcome, I have a house in Salmon that I see every vacation. Man I need a vacation. -
He is the best horse I've ever owned he is just a baby in this photo they grow till 5 or 6 so he is much thicker now. I raised him from a baby he thought he was a dog not a horse. He would try to get in the house every chance he got. Has more personality than most people.

rim back space change
ironworkerboomer replied to ironworkerboomer's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Anytime you change to a higher gear ratio you will lose power so to speak. But still very drivable. -
You should respect your woman and sell it to me Nice ride

rim back space change
ironworkerboomer replied to ironworkerboomer's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
The stock tires were 175/70/13 22.6 inch diameter to 195/75/14 25.5 in diameter 205/45/16 would be 23.3 inches diameter as you can see in photos my 14 are tight, your best bet would be to put one on and see if it will work. There are alot of 16 six lug in the wrecking yards if you explain you need to test fit and leave deposit they may work with you. I left the front 4.5 backspace because I have lock to lock clearance so you may run into problems in the front not the back as I did. Happy Hunting. -
rim back space change
ironworkerboomer replied to ironworkerboomer's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I wholly expected to get flamed for this but for what I'm going to do with it I have no worries, she will be a trail only ride. The stock Nissan rims were 4.5 inch and I pushed them .5 inch out to clear I have a fat 1/4 inch now. the front are unmolested I get lock to lock clearance with a 195/75/14 tire. And I can get my fingers around tire near sheet-metal So I think I could even squeeze some cable chains on front. -
I got tired of hunting a spacer for the rear of the 81 to get the Nissan rims to clear. So in a desperate act I cut the center out of one and moved the back-spacing 1/2 an inch re-weld and took to the tire shop across the street. I figured it would be a roll of the dice and I got the rims cheap. So either a hero or I was very careful in the reassembly one tack weld mount on hub used a square and a adjustable square to measure at tack turn rim 180 adjust with small beater, repeat several times. Then the 90 degree side of both until all 4 quads were good. I took it to the tire shop told the guy to balance best as he could. And it balanced with one weight! So I guess the old saying of the sun shines on a dawgs arse every once in a while is true. here are the photos of mayhem.

ironworkerboomer replied to ironworkerboomer's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Have not had the time to even look at my brat (the subi not the kidd) I am at the last couple of weeks to finish and sell this jail, with all the headaches that go along with it. Owner had a twelve page wish list, they call a punch list that I have been dealing with. I will be moving From Fort Worth to east Texas as soon as they sign off, and I will have the time to tinker on my subi again. And relax for a minute -
hello everyone. brat owner

Riddle me this Batman
ironworkerboomer replied to ironworkerboomer's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Forgive my ignorance but what is tbi? All I can think of is turbo back induction?? If so I would like some more details. I was wondering if Toyota 15 would fit better. I got the Nissan 14 with like new tires for cheap. I will keep a look out. Is your 81 lifted? I don't want to lift YET. -

I didn't want to use spacers but, with no good 13 inch mud and snow tires available! I have to go to a 14. I thought with the mini truck invasion the 13 inch tire would make a comeback with all the farmer rancher guys buying mini T but I haven't found any.
