sorry posted this in your 'rides' thread. EA81 mounts work fine, you are correct in that drill another hole and bolt 'em up i used old ones and filled the gaps with 3m window weld urethane to add some beefiness - you could buy new ones too i guess i used all the 5 speed shift linkages and interior trim i had to space the crossmember down about 1/4" to clear the tunnel no bashing and no lift had to cut a quarter sized triangle out of the back of the hole in the floor 5 speed is shorter so you either need a custom 1 piece driveline - that what i did or you use a EA82 2 peice and figure out how to mount the carrier bearing this is the 2nd easiest swap i ahve ever done on any vehicle (easiest was the rear discs) let me know if you want to come look at mine and also if you want to get rid of the 4speed you might be able to help figure out the wiring for the 4x4 and the reverse lights.....?????
-
4 speed mounts work just fine with the 5 speed, i had to space down the crossmember about 1/4" but it basicly bolted right in, i used all the EA82 interior stuff as well console, shifter boot, etc. there is a way to use the 4 speed stuf and keep the stock console. let me know if you want to get rid of the 4 speed too.

the SU should work fine - just have to find someone who knows about them.. i had triple SU's on a 6 cylinder holden torana back in OZ, the thing outran v8's all the time. i never learn't about the SU's but knew a guy who did, tuning is the key but it would be much easier with just 1. might just be less trouble to replace it with something more mainstream if you can't find someone.... or learn yourself, that would be fun

are you still having vacumn line issues......???? i try to stay away from EA82's... but the weberized EA81 in my Brat was running like a scalded cat till it ran out of oil...i think i have as few vacumn lines as possible come on out an git yer punkins.... ***shameless plug*** harvest fair - first 2 weekends of Oct 10 - 4 punkins and kid stuff.. Wilson Banner Ranch, Hwy 12 -
the "problem" with those wheels will be offset, they will hang out of the fenders....looks cool but will require more bashing/trimming to clear i have stock offset Mazda pickup 14" alloys on my brat with 195/75 R14, no lift and no bashing/trimming.....AND they don't rub at all but they don't look as cool with tyres hanging out of the fenders.... depends what you want...

clarkston? i have a light blue BRAT...grey doors - not running at the moment..... will be driving a maroon EA81 wagon soon i'll try to wave if i see you.... welcome to USMB - every answer i have needed is here (mostly subaru related....) -
i was kind of afraid thats what the answer would be........ did the hood, looks about 1000 times better but could still use some work working on the doors - not as bad rubbed the roof with diesel - see if that wives tales works - looks good for now will post pic when its done

check the fuel shut off soleniod, either check its working or just remove the guts of it, front DS of carb 1 wire going to it. this is what was wrong with my wagon.
-
i couldn't get any interest in this thing to sell.... so i guess i'll just have to keep it need a more family friendly car anyway this will allow me to play with the blue BRAT at my leisure..... with out having to worry about keeping it on the road.... (lift?????, EJ????????) specs: bought from a mechanics yard (did a heap of work and couldn't pay so gave him the title...that was 10 years ago.....) too good for a farm hack so gave my mother in law the 88 DL for a beater and got this back, had a fuel supply issue. 84 GL wagon, D/R, full power options, in pretty good condition, just neglected and sun faded. fixed the fuel issue - removed the guts of the fuel cut out solenoid....also replaced the fuel pump, looks like it has had a tune up (plugs, leads etc) so will just do an oil change and runn it. replaced RH ball joint - source of major clunk. had axles and WB done at the mechanic so they are good tyres are old but good tread - will get some good winter treads on soon. tore out whole interior to clean and replace front seats DS seat monts are screwed up and i have GL10 seats with height adjustable drivers side so will have to custom make the brackets - see how that goes.... pass side fits fine with standard 1" spacer . installed a radio so at least i have SOME tunes - speakers are iffy have some boxes i might just thow in the back needs a polish - any suggestions on an "easy" way to get really badly oxidized paint back to shiny? will get some progress pics soon this is how it started....

The garage queen gets a new heart ::ea81 build::

Yes, I'm planning on using pigtails off of the 4-speed sensors for this new trans, only thing I need to know is how they are wired/color codes. The sensor wire colors are not the same between the two trans if/when someone has this info - this is the last part of my 5 speed swap that hasn't been done yet. i do have to say that the 5 speed is about the easiest swap i have done on any car, there is even holes/threads for the linkages etc.. thanks for the detailed info on the engine, i am going to be doing this for my Brat real soon. -

summer/fall is busy for me but could try to sqeeze it in, - don't have a brat running at the moment tho......... -
the bell ringer is above the glovebox - by the stock radio speaker, i wrapped it in black electrical tape - now it is much quieter - but is still there.

ANYONE HAVE REAR WHEEL ARCHES!!!!!!??????????!!!!!!!!!!???????? i have a parts car, the arches etc are not perfect - some rust in the front part right under the door, the part behind the wheel is good, i am unsure what is going to happen with this car but i am pretty sure its not going to be restored.... will try to get a picture this weekend and you can decide if they will work for you, make me an offer, finding time to get it cut out may be tricky at this time of year, the car is not near the shop so would either have to tow it in to cut the panels out, or find a cordless zzz might be an excuse to buy one

found some new info.... seems i removed something i needed from this carb, swapped on an old single barrel that i know worked and it started right up and ran fine. although now it seems i have a leak in the tank.... , just on the fill tube i think. will look at it this weekend, also am pulling the engine from the blue brat to get it back on the road....
-
i don't have a return line.....maybe that's the problem, the fitting on the carb broke so i just replaced it with a straight hose tail, no return outlet. have changed the filter underneath, i guess, blow air into the tank, then drain it out the bottom....i figured blowing it out would just put all the gunk back into the tank. thanks Mcbrat i will replace the return line....
-
still having fuel issues with this car..... i think i have several problems fuel is not coming out of the tank, -is there a screen? how do you clean it? so i have it hooked up to a jerry can in the back for now. the hitachi carb i have on it worked OK before then i removed everything that i thought was extra from it - electric choke, vac secondary, a ton of vacumn lines... will run now but if i let the fuel pump run without the engine running it will just flood into the throttle body - maybe i removed something important....??? i am at the point where i am going to put an old carter/weber single barrel on it that i am pretty sure works.
-
thanks, will check it out tonight.

Steering Wheel Adapter Questions - 88 GL-10 Wagon
wallaby replied to subi dude's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i did the same to fit my SAAS wheel from oz onto my Brat cut the centre out of an old steering wheel, welded on some thick pipe(shelby tube), then drilled and tapped holes to mount the wheel, back cover is made from the top of a cool-aid can.....hey it looks like a bought one.. don't have a more detailed pic sorry i can agree with the quality/fit of the SAAS product have used several on different cars in oz, the wheels and the boss kits are good stuff -
no idea what the pressure is but i can check it....what pressure do i need? its just a standard square type NAPA or something fuel pump - had a collection of them lying around - gradually using them on subarus......:-p the next part of this is last night it wouldn't stay runnnig - so maybe that pump is no good either, may actually have to buy a new one
-
yeah blue one is a redrilled on Mazda alloys i can't seem to find ttop units to buy......i would like one, but it hasn't happened.....yet Mugs - this one won't be on the road any time soon, the amount of rust underneath is almost to midwest standards- fixable but i don't need to at this time this one is for on-farm only. Engine is toasted in the blue one...now might just be the time for EJ......??????...... back on topic....... got the interior back in this weekend, still have to finish fitting the seats, had GL seats that were badly fitted, will punch some plates after work today. bed trim back on and started on the tailgate latches - bought some pin type latches and will just mount them on the outside, originals were too beat up to work right. drove it around a bit, need to bleed the brakes..... 1 question for the gurus,- have an electric fuel pump hooked up to the key, if i leave the key on (pump running) for a few minutes the fuel leaks past the needle valve and runs into the intake, filling up whichever cylinder has the intake valve open? new needle valve, used fuel pump, do i need a pressure regulator? i have done this before and not had the issue

i have 3 brats - 2 UTVs, this one and a brown one that will be getting a safety orange paintjob at some point, then my DD blue one (that has a bad engine at the moment then a couple wagons as well,....... subys work really well around our farm - my wifes family have a small direct market and upick fruit and vegetable operation. Yes thats a hilux or toyota pickup 76 shortbox (never seen another) belongs to my Brother in law and i am looking after it while he works for the gov, was my daily driver for a while but it has a LOT of issues, but starts and runs every time - has been in the family since new, transfered and gifted so many times between family members it crazy. more on the yella peril this weekend

yesterday i had my first attempt at installing a windshield.... getting the rubber seal out of the parts car did not go so well, ended up taking the windshield out with my boot:D this brat came with a windshield but no seal i got it reinstalled....not a real pro job but i don't think it will fall out got black urethane EVERYWHERE..... and will have to repaint some places.. i don't think i would attempt this on a road car, just for future reference:
-
my wife pointed this one out in a tow yard.....i think she is encouraging the habit...... so we got it for $100 - will become her farm vehicle, we use subys instead of expensive ATV's and UTV was missing some parts and is rusty as hell, but will work great for us had another car paked on the tailgate when we picked it up repairs done - - rebuild carb - removed everything i could from the hitachi, now has manual choke, mechanical secondary, and no extra vacumn/pollution stuff - replace missing starter motor, battery cables, wipers - replaced wheels and tyres - fixed rust in cab floor and painted - beat out tailgate and replaced latches - exhaust -was in the bed - paint - she picked the colour, foam roller, safety yellow - my 4th roller paint job and i think i am getting pretty good at it.... runs pretty good now, needs axles and a dual range - probably after the summer when i have some more time still to do valve cover gaskets - leaks onto exhaust reinstall interior build rear bumper front bumper/bullbar/bash plate before now more to come soon

Time for upgrades to the Brat
wallaby replied to wallaby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
lift may come in time.... tyres clear at the moment, i like that it sits higher on the bigger tyres - i don't wheel it so i don't need a lift, i just want GOOD quality A/T tyres for gravel and farm roads. when these wear out i will be trying to fit a 27 x 8.5 or simmilar on it...might need a lift then. for the moment it is giving me fits, had the carb tuned but the guy said he had to remove the PCV hose and block it off to make it run...??? so i changed the PCV valve for another used one - seems to work right now... the guy also said i should run premium in it.....so i put $20 worth in to see what happens,i'm not convinced - uses more fuel, no noticalbe difference in power. also seems to have less power now, dosen't pull hills like it did when the engine leaked and the carb idled at 2500 rpm????? does the 5 speed have a different 4th gear ratio - i thought it was a 1:1 like the 4 speed my cooling fan is not working at all and it runs really hot - even on the highway and it blow coolant out... my suspicion is a head gasket but the symtoms are incomplete???? i will get to fixing the trans mount this weekend too, might be able to drive it harder then:)
