Time for upgrades to the Brat
wallaby replied to wallaby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
empis fit just fine, except they appear to be too short - the inner boot is kind of stretched out, but they are working well -

i did the same with tranny mounts -EA81 mounts and crossmember, just had to drill them to fit the 5 speed - they were pretty dodgy - maybe new ones would be the go...thanks and yes the wheels are perfect...really like the fat tyres on the back:) -

i have the Brat back on the road, everything works well - drives very different with the bigger/wider tyres BUT have a vibration/noise through the drivetrain under accelleration, gets worse the harder you drive it, take it easy and it is not apparrent. (and taking it easy is NOT an option.....) driveline was professionally lengthened and balanced could the flywheel be out of balance with the engine? clutch was used but good, could it be out of whack? seems to not happen while cruising i am thinking i will remove the rear driveshaft and see if that makes a difference any ideas??? -

did some more over the weekend, finished the exhaust - blocked of the egr, and mounted the tailpipe, even had a big chrome ricer tip... exits right in front of the LH rear wheel - sounds good also had to space the crossmember down about 3/16" to clear all the shift linkages on the tranny then gave it a quick wash and took a couple pics still have som interior work to do i used all the console parts from the 85 so i have to fabricate something to transition from the dash to the console that is where my stereo will mount - about where it is now but not zip tied...... then lined up the 2 running Brats the brown one is my farm utility vehicle - gets used a heap around the farm i just cut out all the rusty parts it will be getting a kubota orange paintjob this spring then finnally the black one will be my wifes farm vehicle -got it for $100 its pretty rusty in the floor and needs a little work to run and drive then it gets painted bright yellow... -

if it gets a lift it will be very small - 1-2" to clear some cooler/tougher tyres EJ may be in the future but we'll go with what we have for now... i want to get the rest of it organized first - interior, paint, barwork etc i figured i would get in trouble if i didn't have pics:D will try to get one soon with the whole stable of brats (3) -
before... Thie is my daily driver Brat, 82 DL single range completly stock except for the weber and a loud exhaust, had it for a few years and driven the hell out of it for not a lot of input, I have been collecting parts for the required ugrades - so around thanksgiving it was time i pulled it off the road - the oil was finnally leaking out of EVERY gasket, all 4 front axles boots were torn, tranny was jumping out of gear etc etc. now it is back to running again with a few minor issues to sort out - exhaust and tranny mounts. now it has regasketed engine complete tune up - plugs, wires, cap ,rotor etc new OEM t'stat and intake gaskets one piece radiator(as opposed to the 2 piece one it had before) "new" exhaust - gutted cat, old 18" cherry bomb, side pipe - needs more modification new EMPI axles dual range 5 speed new lengthened rear driveline rear disc brakes new front pads 6 lug hubs 6 lug wheels OEM mazda pickup alloys - perfect offset and the suby caps fit:grin: fronts are 205/75/14 rears are 245/60/14 - NO LIFT, NO RUBBING, NO BASHING i know they are different - about 1/2" in height - thats what was on the wheels and the 245 fit on the back -they look MEAN and i will be careful in 4x4 till i get them all the same still have some stuff to sort out exhaust hits rear driveline....grrr shift linkage binds on tunnel - need to drop the x/member a bit get carb tuned so the thing will run right get the interior/console fixed so i can mount the stereo instead of having it zip tied to the dash also have to figure out the wiring dor the tranny - got some diagrams from here so will look at that this weekend am really considering a paint job too - i have always wanted a British Racing Green car...so i may just do it (don't think i will ever own a Jag) i think the Brat would look cool in green... a big thank you to this site:clap: everything went as it was stated here - these were the easiest upgrades i have done to any vehicle, the info gathered here is invaluable - thanks will post more progress here as it happens.

"New" Brat - Hitachi Questions
wallaby replied to wallaby's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thanks for the replies, yes i agrre that a weber would "solve my problems" but i think the hitachi will serve my purpose if i can make it work:burnout: (i have one on my daily driver) i will try these things when i have some time - October is Harvest time on our farm - kids and pumpkins...... that and my DD (with the weber) won't start this morning....that is more urgent at the moment. thanks again -
I bought another Brat, (3 total now) this one is a project...... Carb that was on it was a Rochester(?) single barrel with a handcrafted(dodgy) adaptor plate, gummed up with gunk from sitting i decided to replace it with the Hitachi carb from my DD brat that worked pretty well when i took it off. my issue is that most of the vacum lines have been removed and the aircleaner and hard lines bastardized, i don't really want to put them back on unless i have to...... i think these threads would answer most of my questions - but the pictures don't work and i kind of a visual guy.. not sure if GD can fix the pics or post new ones i want to know what is nessasary to make the vehicle run, it runs now but dies when i open the choke butterfly, and idles really high i have almost all the vacum lines just blocked off this is a off road/farm utility vehicle so economy is not an issue just has to start and run reliably at low speed this is a winter project so i have some time - will post pics at some point

Towing a BRAT with 2 lugs per hub?
wallaby replied to 81EA81's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
did this last week with my "new" brat tried to change the tyre, one stud broke off, 1 turned on the knurl so i aired up the tyre and dolly towed it about 50 miles with a dodgy tyre and 2 - luckily opposite - wheel studs, no problems at all -
have learnt more for this year and will keep you posted with dates when i know them. It is indeed being run by a local group, county has provided them a great track in a gravel pit - last year went well but was poorly attended. sounds like it would be a fun thing to do , i will post up any more info that i learn

as far as washing goes... i live and work on a farm so i don't have the regs some of you have to deal with - we have a washing machine set up outside - H & C plumbed though the side of the house and drain onto garden(grey water only) it is our old machine from inside and it leaks a bit but still works, greatest thing for washing stuff like shop rags and pet beds..... +2 on rags from goodwill/salvos etc paper towels for cleaner stuff

thanks for the detailed info i will try that this weekend i don't think its the plugs on the actual switches - they looked good when i changed them bad ground or wire makes sense - intermitent problem.... will post what i find next week thanks

1982 DL Brat single rectangular headlight a while ago (couple months) my low beam didn't come on when i turned on the lights - just park lights, after a few minutes of messing with switches and driving around the parking lot low beam came on. high beam still worked fine thought all this plugged in a different headlight switch - same problem plugged in a different dipper switch - same problem now the problem is permement (adjusted lights way down and drove home on hi last night) have had this problem with other cars and it was the dipper switch - the one i tried could be bad also? my question is - could there be something else? where is the headlight relay? thanks

wallaby replied to Seantheimpaler's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
reminisent of the greatest australian race car of all time http://www.a9xclub.org.au/web%20car%20images/021.jpg i did this on a car i had a long time ago - no glare but a b**ch to clean -
wondering if anyone else has seen/heard anything about this event. Edrach, i saw on another site you had some disscussions - any result? I don't think i will have time to drive in it but would like to go watch and gather some info for next year...... This is literally just down the road from me, i will also try some local contacts for information

I'd agree with miles, roll on industrial/equipment paint i did a 64 f250 in neon safety green about 18 months ago - still looks great it took a whole gallon (about $70) foam rollers from the dollar store(don't wash them out) make sure you clean it well with MP thinners to get all the oil etc of the paint, then get rolling can wet sand after if you want it smooth otherwise it will be a textured finish

official build thread.........this is monstaru2
wallaby replied to monstaru's topic in Members Rides
whatever it is i know for a fact it won't have doors:grin: (well not original ones anyway..........) -
foam rollers from the dollar store, good masking tape, i used sherwin - williams kem 4000 (i think) i did 2 coats with a foam roller - you need a few of them , don't bother washing them out. first coat was pretty thick, 2nd was thinned a bit has an orange peel kind of texture - hides the dents. i used a whole gallon on a 64 f250 - a suby would be less. get a gallon of MP thinners and wipe down everything before you paint, sand/scratch up your paint a bit and go at it - all kinds of colors available. heres a crappy pic
