I just use out-of-the-box Windows Movie Maker.
I drag and drop the .avi files in the timeline,
I chop 'em up, and fade 'em into each other,
And then save the production to a new movie file.
This YouTube video is pretty good up to about 6:04.
At this point I tell it the compression or final file size I want (try a few settings yourself, and see how small you are happy with)
Then you upload it to YouTube (and give me all the credit for showing you how!)
