Well after 1/2 hour of searching the board on this subject, i have come up empty handed. Has anyone done this swap? i have a late production '81 hatch with 2 large square headlights, and i want to apply the 4 small headlight setup to the car. I have a donar car, with the complete setup, so my question is, what all parts do i need to nab from the donar car. Do i need to cut out any of the sheet metal to make room for the 4 headlights? How hard is the wiring to supply power to the headlights? I am looking for any and all tips or tricks to get this swap done. I also plan on applying a cyclops light to the center of the 4 headlights when i get the grill all put together on the hatch. should be pretty sweet when its all said and done.... thanks donny

Is your fuel pump in the engine compartment on the drivers side? If it is, try wiring it up direct and see if it runs for more than 15 seconds....maybe your voltage regulator fried when you saw sparks.....it may need replacing.
-
Sounds too me like you ended up with the wrong alternator. I had this exact same problem with my 1980 wagon. I ended up wireing my fuel pump direct to the battery to get it to stay running for more than a few seconds before i figured out that i had the wrong alternator on the motor. the difference between alternators is that there is one that is internally regulated, and one that is not. If your car has an external voltage regulator, and you put in an internally regulated alternator then you get less than desireable results. Try to figure out if your car is externally regulated, and find out if that alternator is internally regulated. That is where i am putting my money....hope it helps.

well i finally got it working again.....it was frozen solid. I had to let it idle for about an hour, didn't work, so i went driving...after about 20 minutes of driving around, the heat started pouring out.... so now my question is, is 50/50 water and antifreeze not a good combination for winter? what else can i do to prevent this from happening again?
-
My temp gauge is going up a bit higher than 1/2...where it usally doesn't go above the half way point. The heater isn't blowing any warm air at all, it is cold as can be. archemitis, how did you fix your problem? Or have you yet. I am thinking that i have the same problem as you. Flow, i think my belts may be slipping as well because my voltmeter is reading low as well.....how do i fix that problem?

We have had some sub-zero temp. nights here in central oregon, and now my heater doesn't blow warm air. Did the lines going into the heater core freeze? or is my thermostat not working properly? any and all suggestions are welcome here. im hoping one of you guys has a good trick to jump start the heat again. thanks donny oh yea, make and model is a 1981 hatchback.... One more thing. Before my heat quit pumping hot air, i had that gurgleing sound on the drivers side near the firewall everytime i would downshift, or get into higher RPMS....That is the reason i think something is frozen. and yes i have antifreeze in the car....

nope, i screwed it up the day after....good thing too, cause i didn't want to drive on the spare too far. tree lasted the trip in great condidtion. i little wet, but no biggie. i cut off about 2 feet to make it fit in the house just perfect. i even had some people asking where i got it when it was still on the car....i have to admit, we did find some good ones. -

Well right freakin on! Les Schwab found the tire i need (after some serious searching) for only $19.00 The tire that i needed is a discontinued tire, so it was especially hard to get hold of. Ed, thanks for the help, i really appreciate it. a muffed tire is like a f***ed up tire, just the edited version.....muff diving = good ..... muffed driving = bad -
hehe, if he had a computer, he would have been all over it. i told him all about us, and told him that if he had a question that i could post it up for him. We need to make USMB business cards or something to that effect. Something we can hand out to people.....

My first subaru, the subaru that started my addiction, has just driven away with a new owner. It went to a good home. The new owner is a subaru lover who was invovled in an accident in his 88 gl wagon about 3 months ago. He was T-boned by a drunk doing 60. Anyway, he wanted a subaru that was identical to his old one, and he found mine. I guess i just have to find other subaru's to fill the void (wait i already did....mmmmm RX:D ) its kind of hard watching them drive away....

problems with brakes '81 hatch (man who cursed me?)
harpua replied to harpua's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
thanks miles, isn't the brake line going into the caliper at pretty close to the same hight as the bleeder valve? Which would put it above the fluid and should be able to leave the caliper in place to bleed the brakes right? i am thinking i will go buy another caliper as soon as i can (hopefully by the beginning of the year) but until then i need to get this working i think... -
Alright, so i go to bleed my brakes, and i instantly break the bleeder valve off. I take it to a friends shop, and break an easy out in the hole. After many failed tries to get the ********** out of the hole, we give up. I now have that hole completly sealed off. no longer usable. my question is, should i try to bleed the brakes by undoing the main brake line? would this be an effective way to bleed my brakes, or should i just give in and go buy another caliper. by the way this happened to the drivers side front caliper on my 1981 hatch. thanks for reading donny

*IDEA* Pull the axle out of the car. Put it on a hard flat surface. Go get a big sledge hammer. Proceed to beat the living hell out of the axle. Put the sledge down. Confirm death of axle. Continue to put a new axle into the car. When done stop and think about how much fun it was to beat the bearings out of the axle. Proceed with your day. Hope this helps....its what i would do anyway.... later -

harpua replied to Subafly's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
As far as i know the rain gutter ones will work.... and if you are interested there is a used sports equipment place here that sells all sorts of roof racks for pretty reasonable prices. Let me know if you want me to help you get something. later donny -
Hey Zap, i have spent some time in Star Valley.....lets see like 18 years of my life...... Zap isn't lying when he says it sucks, cause it does. But strangly i miss it still. Well the fishing and mountains anyway. Not the people by any means. Where in Star valley did you stay zap?
