  1. Yeah that's the conclusion i came to as well. the unfortunate part is i cant find any used units anywhere.
  2. Hey guys, i've got a 91 legacy with a 4EAT, and it has crapped out. I was plowing through a snow drift in manual 1st and something let go and it acted like i was in neutral. I put in in drive, and it started in second gear and i make it home. I went out today to go to work and i put it in manual first to see what would happen. something locked up and it would barely move. i shifted into manual second and it would go, but it dragged like it was fighting first gear. i had to drive it to work because it's my only legal car, and one of the clutches or clutch packs smell burning when i got there. btw its only a mile to work. has anyone else had a similar problem? also i cant find any technical data for the transmission like clutch application charts, or even rebuild procedures. i dont want to drive the car till its fixed. good thing i was gonna buy a bicycle anyway thanks!
  3. pour in a half can, and that's it. you can pour the rest in your gas tank. then go drive it like you stole it to work out the gunk in the lifters.
  4. read this post here: http://legacycentral.org/library/torquebind.htm then go to your favorite parts store and get a can of trans-x. what's going on is you have an internal leak in your output shaft housing. this stuff will seal it up. It will also clean up some of the gunk built up inside the tranny. but you should do that after you replace the pan filter and fluid. I did the trans-x last friday after having the same problem as OP. Now it's all fixed
  5. In closing, today in class we learned that if i wanted good gas milage, i should have brought my geo metro with me when i moved out here.
  6. guess i should go to great falls one of these days. maybe i will swing by the subaru dealer there. Also, it's freakin cold here. that probably doesn't help.
  7. the car does actually warm up to operating temp, thanks to the cardboard i put over the radiator. It would even warm up quickly at -10 degrees before i put in the cardboard. And Nipper, the oil gets changed every 3000, on the dot. I'm wondering if maybe cleaning out the intake might help. And is there a kit out there to rebuild injectors? maybe they have gotten sticky over the years.
  8. 258xxx miles, i serviced the brakes a year ago, just checked em yesterday, looks good. the car runs like a champ except when you first start it, then it idles at about 500 rpm. no check engine light, and i aligned it myself about 6 months ago.
  9. When i go to Great Falls from Havre, i average from 85 to 95 m.p.h. takes about two hours.
  10. I would like to drive through the whole tank, but its only two miles to work and back, and the nearest population center is 102 miles south, and i have no reason to go there :-p
  11. Ok. I've driven 82 miles since last fill-up and i just put in exactly 6 gallons at the pump. 13.6 mpg. Although i have no idea how i drove 82 miles. Especially when the town i live in is 3.5 miles square.
  12. k. when the gauge read a hair above E it gets 13.5 gallons, so that what i am basing this off of, but i will go and fill up real quick to get some exact numbers, should take about 30 mins. and i have been keeping track of mileage too.
  13. yes, complete tune-up, from plugs to pcv, 1/4 tank of gas to go 15 miles. so 14 gallon tank. 3.5 gallons into fifteen miles. 4.2 mpg. Also, its an automatic, which i have 100% flushed, and replaced both filters and added an extra tranny cooler. and i have 215/75r15 size tires.
  14. Exhaust is all intact except where i chopped the muffler and put in a glasspack. She has all the heat shields too. Its a Washington car that has no rust whatsoever
  15. Hello all, My 91 Legacy is getting terrible gas milage. I've been keeping track and i am only getting about 100 miles to a tank of gas during in town driving. What sort of things could be causing this? I have my tires set at 35 psi, cleaned the maf, am running non ethanol fuel, and seafoamed the gas and oil. Also, the exhuast does not smell rich, and there are no fuel leaks. What the heck
  16. Here's the displaced legacy! Wish i had my wagon with me out here...
  17. Ethanol makes all cars built before 07 or so run like crap. it also eats away at everything like fuel lines, o-rings, and pressure regulators. I know it made my 91 lego get about 15 mpg. and it ate through my fuel lines!
  18. Hey man, no problem!

  19. there ya go, To upgrade the alternator, it depends on if you are on a budget or not. If you are not on a budget, go to your local parts house and get a reman xt-6 alternator. should run you about 140 bucks plus a core. If you are on a budget, then find a nissan unit at a junkyard. i'd prefer it over a GM swap after having done both of them. It takes more time to get the spacer right, but less modding the car, and you can easily switch back.
  20. I havent had any problems even when i accidently sank my wagon, must be a problem with your car. i would suggest to replace your spark plug wires. if they are old, water can short them out.

  21. There's my rigs The legacy has a stock alternator, seems to handle the current just fine. The wagon had a Nissan alternator when the picture was taken with a beefed up alternator to battery cable to handle the extra current. The more the merrier
  22. I went to my local junkyard and talked to them about the carb. Its a 500 cfm off of a ford. gonna clean it up today and start working on the block. also, doesnt the dual carb motor have a different cam than the regular one?
