New Loyale owner, any advice?
dtrentr replied to capecove's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I bought a 91 Loyale wagon in Feb w/ 48K on the clock. Wish it was a 5 speed, but it was for my 16 yr old daughter so she will live with the lower mpg. I think you'll find that parts are readily available at NAPA, they have most everything I have needed so far to replace hoses, belts, valve cover gaskets, filters, etc and seemingly good quality. I use the Wix filters also, they're the best for the buck. This forum has really helped me out, lots of good subie owners on here and very willing to share expertise. -
strange oil pressure and some pinging
dtrentr replied to akc's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I just bought a new oil sending unit at NAPA for $24, mine has the gauge also and it is pretty intermittent. I've only got 48K of old lady miles on my '91 and I don't think it would continue to run as cool and as well as it does w/o oil pressure. I'm waiting to change the oil and install the sending unit at the same time. Thought about replacing the pump, but trying this first, after 19 years, it's probably tuckered out! -
I replaced mine last week, and they just quit turning when they are tight, no need to torque them.

bolt holding AT Tranny filter
dtrentr replied to dtrentr's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
nothing stripped that I can tell. I'll try the longer bolt and see if it's just pushed something up and maybe another inch will get there, otherwise I'll leave it out and hope for the best. It looked like the tranny pan was seeping so the gasket was in order, for $7 wth, it sure needed the fluid changed. Off to NAPA when they open, gotta get this thing on the road, I figure on Monday it won't ever cool off long enough to work on! -
dropped the tranny pan on my 91 loyale with the 3 sp AT and had no problem getting the tranny filter off, bunch of 8mm bolts and 3 10 mm ones toward the back. My problem is that the two short 10mm bolts went back in fine, but the longer of the 3 isn't screwing into anything, it's like it's not grabbing hold of whatever it's supposed to screw into. What am I missing? I've stff to no avail. I know I just can't stick in a loose bolt in a transmission and hope that it heals itself, is there something that bolt is holding onto that I've moved somehow? Help please, my daughter turns 16 Monday and this is her present! Anybody got any ideas, I've worked on it for an hour.

I changed my valve cover gaskets and grommets Monday on my 91 Loyale. Go with the Felpro, it was $14 and change at NAPA. Wasn't too hard, the bolt on the back DS valve cover was the hardest to get to. Bought a ratcheting 10mm wrench but probably could have done w/o it. The 18 year old gaskets I took out of there sure were brittle, no wonder it was staining the driveway!

eeek! coolant dripping from front of engine
dtrentr replied to codytotheh's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
That little trim to fit hose is $5.49 at NAPA, fits many v-8 fords. On my loyale it's pretty easy to see at the back of the spfi. -
91 Loyale 48Kmiles and a few ?'s from newbie

I'd say I'm the aluminum one then, no paint on the fins that I can see, black plastic on the sides. Thanks so much, that saved me some aggravation! -

The parts guy at our local dealership says there's possibly two different part # for the radiator hoses, one for a copper radiator and one for a aluminum radiator, how the heck do you tell which one you might have? I gave him the VIN #, but he didn't have a clue how to tell them apart. I guess I'll just have him order one of them and I'll take the car out there when I pick up the parts on Wednesday. -

Pass side from the top, drivers from the bottom, got it, thanks! What kind of gasket sealant do subaru's like on their valve covers, or none at all? -

Plugs and wires went on last night w/o any trouble. Starting to develop a "Subaru stain" on the driveway, so may get to the valve covers next. Looks like the pass side shouldn't be too tough, a/c in the way on the other. I am waiting for my local Sub dealer to get back with me on the prices on some parts before I go on the internet and search for the OEM stuff. -

All the maintenance receipts along with the window sticker were in the glovebox. The plugs and wires are from 1998 and looks like the disty cap and rotor are the same vintage, to they'll get replaced also. Fortunately they had done axles and timing belt in '06. I plan to flush the fool out of the radiator first thing, don't see any receipt for that, it still looks green in the overflow tank, and not green jello! I wish it was a 5 speed, but then it's going to be my daughter's car so I can't dwell on that. S'posed to be a little warmer this weekend in Little Rock, so we'll spend it in the garage. I'll work on the cooling system first, then get to the tune up stuff, valve covers after that. Looks like everything is pretty easy to work on. -

This will be my 16 year old daughter's starter car, and I hope it takes her well through college! My first was a '72 Fiat 128 and you learned a lot about cars having a fix it again tony! -
Just bought my friend's mom's 91 Loyale wagon, AT, 4wd with 48K on the clock. Drove 900 miles home so it's in pretty fair shape. Timing belts changed in the last 2 years (2000 miles ago) so good there. Needs some TLC: fluid changes, plugs, wires, disty cap and rotor, pcv valve, and all that I think I can do, had VW's but not soobs so here's my questions. I'm real concerned about the cooling system hoses and want to replace all of that first thing. Should I buy OEM hoses, or head to my local parts store? I know I need the upper and lower big hoses, how many more are there, or can I just call one of the online stores and say sell me all of them, and if so, how many $ will that run? I've read the warnings about only getting OEM thermostats and pcv valves, so will sure do that. Lots of oil leaks, will give the motor a bath and then start looking. I'm sure I'll be back for some searching or advice. Y'all all seem like a great bunch of folks with lots of good help.
