I didnt feel the need to replace any bushings when I did mine. Never did feel any weird play associated with bad ones either. For the front you could just throw in the xt parts with EA inner cups until you get the right ea-->ej front axles.

Sweet progress dude! One thing I can add for your five lug swap, it's WAY easier just to unbolt the trailing arms and everything all together from the rear and move the whole assembly over than to take everything apart!

My 96 also has a similar shimmy. Can hear a "whom-whom-whom-whom" noise on deceleration that seems to be in time with the pedal pulsation and steering wheel wiggle that I have. Haven't gotten a chance to check run out on the front rotors yet, ball joints and bearings look/feel good. Pads are almost new and tires have less than 200 miles on them. Oh and it's a Brighton (rear drum) car.

Well, put down about 110 miles in the old girl. Stumble/miss hasn't gone away yet. NGK wires are supposed to be here at 2. Hopefully that along with a new set of plugs will help cure the old girl. Seems to be running pig rich as well, filled it up yesterday and reset the trip meter. 110 miles later I'm reading at a measly 1/3 tank remaining! Leaving out of state for work tomorrow morning. Will have more time to work on it when I get back.

It runs! And quite well I might add. I was goofing the timing yesterday. Got her set all straight today and even got to drive it! Filled her up with premium in hopes that it will help the mid-throttle buck/hesitation its got going on. It threw a CEL at me just a couple blocks from my house, got them checked out and was found to be a misfire on cylinders 2&3. So, either they are isolated incidents, being on opposite banks and coils, or I just need new plugs and wires. Got the plugs and wires ordered today anyhow. Boy, these things sure do have a lot more pep than my old GL! In short: I is happy boy!:clap::clap:

I'm thinking I'm ok there. I can turn both cams by hand, albeit with a good amount of effort, but I can rotate both of them 360* and they require about the same amount of effort. I'm just really not looking forward to having to tear EVERYTHING back apart again, compressing the hydraulic tensioner again in a very ghetto fashion, and trying all this again. BLEH

So, a little update on this basket case of mine. Replace Cam. Done. Install new timing set. Done. Get starter to spin motor. Done. WHY YOU NO START, SUBARU!!!! Soo, taking the timing set apart 3 separate times in the thought process of "Oh, I must have just been a tooth off" No dice. Give GD a call to see if he has any tips for WTF is going on. Reminds me of the counting teeth method on the belt to ensure correct timing. Light bulb clicks so I try again. Get 'er buttoned up, turn the key, spins, but no start. :banghead::banghead:zzzzzzzzz: WTF?!?!?!?! At this point I'm about ready to start throwing things AND I'm losing a significant amount of light to work in. So I put my tools up and start poking around with my flashlight. Turn the crank by wrench until D-side cam pulley is where it should be. Crank and P-side pulley are also no where NEAR where they should be. Which means my belt jumped. A lot. WTF!!! So seriously guys, need some help here, either there is something wrong with my parts, or they were installed incorrectly. Feel free to treat me like an idiot at this point, because I sure feel like one. EDIT: Just read through the link concerning 2.2 timing belts here in the USRM. Seems I missed the step of pushing the tensioner back to the left after the belt is installed. Looks like I'll try that in the morning and see if i can get the damn thing to fire. Am also going to pour a few gallons of fresh gas in the old girl. No telling how old the stuff that's in her is.

Marshall, just remember that is absolutely NO SUCH THING as a "permanent" job. I know it's fun to get stuff done with your car, and I'm not discouraging that one bit. But, you of all people on this board know that things can and will blow up in your face and set you back quite a bit. All I'm really saying, is maybe slow down a bit with the car and sock away some money in case things do get bad again. Would suck to see you have to give up your project or something to pay off bills because you ran out of cash. On a lighter note, I've got some 04-06 WRX/Legacy wheels that I'd let go for SUPER cheap if you're interested. I need to make a run down your way soon anyhow.

Correct, rear end is ALL XT6 parts from the cross member down.
-
Glad to hear you are happy with it Chad, keep a hold of my number, and don't be afraid to give me a ring with any questions about the car!
-
Well, I gave him a smoking deal on it. He got a great car and a huge pile of parts, and I got a fist full of cash.

Well, I no longer own this fantastic, memorable piece of machinery. Have moved on to a 96 Legacy Wagon that I'm even MORE excited about. 6 Star left with this wagon less than an hour ago.

Considering the belt looked pretty damn new when I got the timing covers off, and the cam bolt cam off without trying very hard with my standard length 3/8" ratchet, pretty sure it's just a goof. I understand that they will come out with the engine in the car. Still debating if I want to pull both and send the two good ones to delta for a quick re grind while I'm in Texas for a couple weeks...

I get that you're still in school, and that can make you lazy outside of those activities. But for the LOVE OF GOD, PLEASE edit your post and break it down into manageable portions that use proper spelling and punctuation at minimum. I'd like to congratulate you on your work on the car, but I can't even read WTH you've done to it.

I've got a Subaru buddy that informed me that all these starters are the same from EA on up through second gen legacy as long as they are 5MT starters, which he happens to have a few of so I'm going to pick one up from him to see if that gets me going. Cougar, thanks for the reminder on checking compression! Wicked good way to see if there is something bent before I try to start it! Now concerning that, what is the best way to do it with these cars, being distributorless ignition and all that. Pull all the plug wires off the coil and spin it like that? You guys are great motivation!
-
What is the stock bulb number for the first gens? And did you do the projectors about the same way the EA guys like Turbone and them do theirs? I've got a 96 I'd like to stuff projectors into after I get it running, and have begun the research now.

Well, my timing kit is here, cam shaft and pulley replacement are in the mail, got a line on a good used starter. Can't wait to put this thing together and see if she fires! I'm hoping I can get away with throwing these couple of new parts in and having her go. If she makes a lot of noise, I will pull the heads off and go all the way through her. I can't lose! Total investment so far: $950
