Purple lightning under the hood?
thebr0wn0ne replied to thebr0wn0ne's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
like spark plugs and spark plug wires? Because i just replaced those earlier this week or are you referring to the wires and plugs on the coil? -
Okay so its not literally purple lightning but thats what it looks like. My coil is arcing between the posts with purple "lightning". Ive never seen this before nor do I know how to diagnose this.... any ideas as to whats wrong? Is the coil itself bad or is it something I can fix? i.e. is it not grounded properly etc.... thanks for the input! I just wanna get my 81 sedan back in tip top condition so i can get it to the show this coming year.

Thanks for the input guys, im thinking its the fuel filter and or pump.... as of last night and this morning it is starting EXTREMELY cold, to the point where giving it gas does almost nothing and it dies almost immediately. I have to keep the key in the ignition turned a hair to the right while giving it a little gas to keep it from dieing while it warms up. and now instead of sputtering over 3-4k it sputters and jumps coinstantly for the first ten minutes of driving and then eventually goes back to the only over 3-4k.... but the weird part is that it doesnt do this all the time.... like some days it will run and drive without any antics and some days its almost impossible to drive.

So after replacing the spark plugs, distributor cap and rotor, my 81gl sedan runs a million times better ( who would have thought? ) but now even after its warmed up once i reach 4k it sputters and hesitates like almost as if their is a lack of fuel. Any ideas on what that could be? Also I pretty sure i have a blown headgasket or a cracked head... as a short term remedy would that BlueDevil sealant be a good choice? Thanks for the help! heres a pic just because

Finally fixed what i thought was everything on my little 87 hatch, and now that i can start the darn thing it wont idle by itself. It just dies if you take your foot off the gas pedal. I have no idea what is causing this. Any help and or ideas would be appreciated greatly! -a newbie

Are you starting it with a screw driver like some of us other old gen people? If so it could be the ignition cable thingy ( cant remember the name of it for the life of me. ) but mine took a ************ on me a while back and i had the same issues you are describing. and if you arent using a screw driver and its still in its cubby hole. its located behind the lock assembly on the steering column. Good luck hope this helps! -
