  1. This is the new-to-the-car tranny. It was swapped out. I imagine it was cut when the old one was dropped, so there's no other end for it. I'll crawl under there and see what I can do. Maybe run a whole new ground.
  2. 95 Legacy LS, auto trans. The wire in question is under the ignitor, is red & blue, and connected to the chassis on the DS. Seems from the way its connected to the body that it would be a ground. But for what? It may be nothing to worry about, but I was hoping somebody could shed some light on it for me... The FSM hasn't help me a bit in narrowing it down... not knowing is killing me Thanks!
  3. This may help, I know it helped me out... Don't know where I found them on here but I had them saved on my computer... Thanks to GD for these pics...
  4. '84 Gl: I took emory cloth to the disty contacts and rubbed off the corrosion. Now my GL starts up right away now instead of three long cranks and a chug chug start. Jury rigged my torn DOJ boot with aluminum tape and heavy mil plastic until my replacement boot comes in. Going to rig up some heat shields for the pipe too. '95 Legacy: Gave it a bath to wash off all the damn salt. Ordered OEM wire set & plugs. Installed new rotors and pads in the rear. Greased all slide & lock pins in calipers. Oil & filter, drain plug & washer changed.
  5. Cool! Existing heat shield? :-\ Didn't come with one... just the dang pipe naked as a newborn... I guess a torn boot should have been expected, huh? So around these parts we don't have 80s Soobs at the JY. So I was thinking maybe other Soobs exhaust pipe heat shields could maybe fit,... maybe slightly modified? After all this boot is heat-resistant, not heat-proof...
  6. So I found a tear on the DOJ boot PS. I think I found it just after it happened. Just a couple of drops of grease in the surrounding areas & no clicking sounds. Found it after checking the gear oil level (luckily I do this very often). I'm going to pull the axle and replace the boot, and while I'm at it replace the front bearings too. Local Autozone only has the universal junk withe glued seem. I did find this one at partsgeek.com: http://www.partsgeek.com/gbproducts/YN/D360-K6020.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=ff&utm_term=84+1984+Subaru+GL+CV+Boot+OEQ+Front+Inner+83+1983+Subaru+CV+Boot+4WD+Wagon+Turbocharged&utm_content=YN&utm_campaign=PartsGeek+Google+Base I was wondering, well two things... 1. this part indicates for the turbo motor; can i presume that this will fit on a non-turbo 1.8? 2. does anyone know of heat-resistant boots for the 84 GL. I see alot of the heat-resistant ones available for the newer gens, but not the old gens. I appreciate any guidance you can provide... many thanks in advance! EDIT: after searching for Brat boots, found this heat-resitant one: http://www.partsgeek.com/catalog/1984/subaru/brat/driveshaft_-ar-_axle/cv_boot_kit.html I suppose Brats boots anfd GLs boots are interchangeable... ?
  7. http://philadelphia.craigslist.org/cto/1537931653.html So yes, I have the illness... I WAS thinking about this one for myself, but there just isn't room for three Soobs in my driveway. My Sis is jealous of the Lego formally known as Ceeci (man, i need to rename it), and have been searching for one for her... This ad jumped out at me and was thinking hmmm,... I'll see what everyone else thinks. Too high asking price? Would you do it? Steering rack, is it the right diagnosis? (seems like an easy thing to pull at JY) Two-toned... what's up with that? Let er rip...
  8. This Board can definitely help you with this issue. Many knowledgeable folks here more than willing to share their expertise, advice, opinions and guidance, not to mention their experiences as to what works and what doesn't. If something comes up, do a search, read a little or post your question and you may be able to turn a mechanic's bill of thousands into a $50 repair. Welcome!
  9. Have you taken carb cleaner and checked for any vacuum leaks? Are your spark-plug wires good? on tight? If you have, don't mind me... just my thought process... and that's not a very long process :-\
  10. Go to advanced search and pick New Gen Subarus forum and use keywords forester axle replace, no quotes... or some other combo of words that you think would be used for the procedure you need help with. I cam up with the below typing my suggestion above: This could help you I think... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=52790&highlight=replace+cv%23%23+axle+forester here's the lot of them: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/search.php?searchid=913589 There is the issue of using words with less than four letters; in this instance you would need to use a wildcard like *. Searching for Joint and Constant might land you in the Off-Topic forum. Hope some of this helps... good luck!
  11. +1 Good luck with the inspection! Just a thought, but try to cover up the shiny-ness of the non-foulers. Used oil, mud, etc. Inspectors are like crows,... attracted to anything shiny
  12. Congrats! Sweet score! Looks super clean! And it's a 5spd? Awesome... great ground clearance too.
  13. WOW! Awesome job! Congrats! You motivate me!
  14. Let's find The Dude a Soob!!! Not close, but a good drive away there are these: St Louis, 2 Soobs for $500... need work... http://stlouis.craigslist.org/cto/1521800848.html Betcha this one just needs timing belt (non-interference): http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/1513363048.html Bring a trans with you for this one: http://kansascity.craigslist.org/cto/1518297517.html
  15. Thanks Connie! This means so much to me & Sarah Still haven't renamed her, but she feels right at home (see pic)
  16. Hello my Scottish Subanatic! And a Merry Xmas to you! I feel the same way about donating... If I could I would donate money but seeing that I needed to borrow cash from my friend (worth every penny in interest) to make this purchase it looks like all I can do is the shirt off my back or one of my kidneys. Around here a mechanic would run me $75 (low end) to $110 an hour for labor. USMB has without a doubt saved me cash in the bundles and also headaches and endless frustration. This board deserves the funding from its users and I will be donating for sure (maybe all those gift cards I'm sure to get again this Xmas). According to the Community Chest on the Home Page (scroll all the way down) donating can be done through Paypal; or mailing cash (not recommended), check, or money order. If mailing, use this address... Ultimate Subaru Club 801 Timberlane Huxley, IA 50124 USA AND... if MO or check is written out make it out to "Ultimate Subaru Club" NOT "USMB". What do Scots use for currency anyhow?
  17. Hi all, Have been an Older Gen reader since I was first referred to this board when I purchased the 84 GL. I am now obsessed with this forum as I am now the proud owner of Ceeci, Connie's 95 Legacy LS. I have no problems to report,... just seriously impressed with this board AGAIN, as the sticky in this forum answered just about everything that's been on my mind for the past few days, and of course searching the threads. The Legacy passed NJ safety & emissions inspections today with "flying colors" (actual words from the dude). Ceeci (do I rename it? is that kosher?) will be my wife's daily driver. I think my wife has the illness too... all Soob-talk since the purchase. I can't close out without expressing thanks to everyone who has contributed to the health of this wagon. Some names that I recall from the weekend are Backwoodsboy, Hatchsub, Njdrsubaru, McBrat, and certainly Connie. Sorry that I can't remember the rest... but tremendous thanks nonetheless. She's is good hands, I promise! ~Fred
  18. 25617592126585 This was emailed to me... thought I'd share. Enter the code above in the "How did you hear about us" line of the shopping cart to get 5% off your order... it's not much, but pennies add up!
