Is it possible to put a 89-90 turbo loyale engine into an '87 RX coupe? Both are 5-speeds.What are the compatibility issues if any? Thanks.

May sound like a no brainer...here's the story....recently acquired two 1996 2.2engines. Both are from Automamtic transmission vehicles. One of the engines,I am doing a swap into one of my RX's,the other would like to replace the high mileage engine in my '98 5 speed AWD Legacy wagon. Someone suggested that I would need a flex plate of some sort inorder to hook up onto the manual tranny...kindly advise on what other parts are needed,or is it just a straightforward plug and play deal? Thanks.

Almost similar to the post about Brats below. Was thinking of changing manual windows to power windows on a 5-speed AWD 98 Legacy Wagon, mine has manual windows.I see a lot of vehicles at the local junkyards that are of same year and color but power windows. Is it easier just to get the whole doors, and does it apply to back doors too? What else do I need? Thanks.

My 0.02 cents, I am also a rookie...had a similar problem with a '97 legacy AWD wagon.Only difference was that mine was an auto and not a 5-speed.Got rid of it for a '98 legacy 5-speed...,for that main reason. When turning 90 degrees to either side, there would be a grinding noise similar to yours...sometimes felt like I was trying to turn an 18 wheeler...had to sorta make a wide turn. All the tranny shops failed to diagnose it...finally the Subaru dealership said that it was a soleniod sensor within the tranny...gone bad....one of the techs there suggested that the damage may have been caused over the years by previous owner using fluid that was too viscous while changing the rear diff oil.I dont think that the 5-speed has one of these, but I could be wrong.

My fellow Subaru people, I am a Legacy guy, also currently working on my '87 RX turbo coupe(to play in the snow:).I am considering an SVX addition to my collection since they are really cheap around here.If intending to do a 5-speed swap, whats the best EJ tranny to use inorder to handle the 230 horsepower? With what adjustments?Any extra stuff needed?Someone once suggested that these cars are utterly useless,I hope that this is not a waste of time.Any advise will be much appreciated. Thanks!

Definitely true that the 1.8 liter turbo engines are problematic/less reliable than their successors. But lets not forget that they were fully tested to the maxx when Subaru entered the Kenya Safari Rally,to counter the Audi Quattro and the Toyota Celica. For those not familiar with this rally,it has been the proving/testing ground for mainly Japanese and European auto makers for many decades(since the '50's)....at one time called the East African Safari Rally. If I remember correctly,Dodge entered the RamCharger in either '81 or '82. Some of us were fortunate enough to grow up in that part of the world, and had the chance to see cars flying(yes,I said flying!) 4-6 feet off the ground while doing 130+ miles per hour.Imagine driving day and night thru all kinds of terrain and weather?!(Do not confuse with the RHINO CHARGE EVENT which is strictly an offroad challenge with cahritable intentions). I have maintained good relations with some of the rally guys back home, and hope that one day we here at USMB can enter a car or two.

Thanks for the tips,I generally do my own mechanicals but have never done swaps.I might PM a number of people here just to get details.

Definitely want a turbo and anything else that can boost the horses...have been told about some engines being too strong and may mess up the tranny.

Cool, hope to get some more info and catch up with you there.

Be up there sometime in May.
