i am new to the site and i have some questions
subyrally replied to doubi2's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i grew up in a neighborhood called camerons crossing, it was a small condo development next to pelican watch off of buckner blvd. the court i lived on was directly across the street from the back entrance of the princess anne blvd tcc campus. hell, one of my bests friends still lives right down the street from there, or did last year. i am actually going to the outer banks in NC in two weks to see my dad, but its a good likelyhood that ill be in va beach to see my brother at some point. maybe we can meet up at some point while i am down there. -
5 spd, Conversion, drive line problem?
subyrally replied to Indrid cold's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i thuoght that the 5spd trans was longer than the 4spd, thus requiring a shorter shaft. -
5 spd, Conversion, drive line problem?
subyrally replied to Indrid cold's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
that reminds me, i really need to get a one peice shaft for the 5spd swap i have planned, the local shop that i talked to wants about $250-$300 to make a 3" diameter shaft with replaceable joints for the swap. granted, its cheaper than anything from the dealer, its still a bit more than id like to pay. anyone have any idea of what shipping might run to get a drive shaft shipped from oregon to maryland? i am sure that it bveing shipped from a business will make a huge difference, but im sure its still not cheap. -

subyrally replied to doubi2's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i only used 4wd in dry conditions when i was driving in the twisties at speed. above 45mph, there is usually enough slip between the road and tires that the driveline doesnt bind. i never had any issues with 4wd on dry unless i was going slow and making tight turns. 4wd can be very useful in th rain, and fun as well. hey, i just noticed that you are in Va Beach, thats where i grew up, not that i ever grew up. ill be down that way in about two weeks. -

yeah, unfortunatly, that is more than i want to spend on the stock engine. i just want it to run long enough to build my other engine, which, i am hoping, will be toward the end of summer to the middle of fall. -

i have honestly thought about it. either that or spfi swap on it. eventually, i am going to do an engine swap, but first i really want to get the drivetrain, suspension, and brakes sorted out before i worry about doing an engine swap in it. i need to figure out what i need and then figure out where to get it without spending too much, i am trying to go on vacation in two weeks and id like to be able to afford the gas to do so, lol. right now, i can afford to spend about $150 on parts to get it sorted out. can a full spfi swap or weber set up be had for that? even if it can, how likely is it to be doable in my timeframe? -

cant find hte 22mm socket, like ive said a couple times, but the alternator wont turn the engine, the belt will just slip first. but i am going to try to work at it tonight. i also talked to a friend of mine that is a master tech, ase and subaru. he said that he might be able to come over and get it sorted out. dude knows his subarus. i just hope he can make it in time to get the car on the road before my trip. -

would help if i could find the socket and wrench to turn the crank, last time i messed with it, i couldnt findthe timing marks on the flywheel, i tried tapping the starter to rotate it a little at a time. but it might be corroded over and i cant get anything through the timing window to clean the fly wheel. -

Want to build my own fuel rails
subyrally replied to carfreak85's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
need fuel injctors, fuel rail stock long enough to fit the injectors and manifold, proper injector fittings, fuel injection hoses, hose fittings, pressure regulator, and someone that can do high quality aluminum fabrication and welding. -

ok, so yeah, i still cant figure anything out, doesnt help that i havent gone out to work on it in a while:banghead: . i am still clueless about the carb in this thing. i really want to get it bsack on the road before i go on vacation in a couple weeks, but its soo hard to get anything done since there isnt anyone around here that can help me out . i kinda feel lost and helpless on this. if i wasnt trying to gt it running soo soon, and i had some room to work on and store some cars and parts, i would just go ahead and swap the engine in the car. but for my trip, id really like to get the ea81 running right so that i could at least drive it to show it off to my dad, lol. that and it should get better milage than my impreza. this is driving me crazy. on top of the engine problems, the seats are messed up too, but i can rig them to work properly. but i want the car runnign before i worry about that. -
go for it miles. thats kinda waht id like done with my brat, fist id like to get the damn thing running right though.
-
doubt that the 08 parts would fit right at all, i had a ct back from an 04 on my 2000 impreza and it had to be cut up and modified to fit. if im not mistaken, the new impreza is build on a modified legacy chassis, the sedan has dual mufflers and the hatch has a muffler that exits on the passenger side but runs side to side under the rear of the car. im sure you ould make it work on there, but it would be more cost effective to get a custom exhaust made for your car or buy one made for it, unless you can fabricate and have access to pipe benders and a good welder. if you get the parts and really want to try for it, i wish you the best of luck and ask that you take pics of the work and progress,. good luck.

Any interest in a ROUGH Turbo Brat?
subyrally replied to ettev's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i would loveto get ahiold of the turbo parts and engine for that. only problem would be whether or not i could actually make any use of the parts. not sure what i could afford to spend either. i guess it all depends on the pricing and when things happen. -

Hello an Help Requqest!
subyrally replied to SubaruZach's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
there is nothing wrong with learning on the rx, thats how i learned, granted, i was 20 when i got mine, but i had only been into cars a little over a year and knew squat about cars at that point, building my rx was a steep learning curve but well worth the effort. it taught me a lot about diagnostics and just wrenching in general. i wouldnt get the rx for your primary car, my daily driver is an impreza, so i was never stuck when the rx was down. granted, the only times the rx was down once i finally got it running was from sabotage from meineke and then just my own stupidity later on. and like everyone has said, pay close attention to the cooling system, make sure that your radiator and hoses are all in good shape. head gaskets are easy to do on this engine, but its still not fun to do. dont let anyone else tell you what to do, you have to make your own decisions about what you want to do. but do take time to read te advice from the people here, they know hese cars better than just about anyone in the world. good luck and enjoy the car, they are an absolute blast to drive when you get it running right. -

subyrally replied to mentis's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
one of the tuner mags did a product review on em, they tested the plugs in a 350z and picked up like 11hp at the wheels. i dont think they had the car long enough at that point to tell if the fuel savings were accurate though. i am going to try them at some point though. -
you will need to cut out a sectoin or take the car with you to where ever you are going to get the metal and have ti made up, then they wold be able to tell you.

i know how to use a timing light, but i just couldnt find the marks onthe flywheel. when the wether gets better, i am going to get out there and try again. i also picked up a new ignition coil for it just in case.
