still fighting with my 85 brat
subyrally replied to subyrally's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
yes, i got a timing light, but i cant find the timing marks on the flywheel. the fuel filters were replaced last summer before i got the car and the new pump has a filter attached to it. ill change the other filter out with a new one i have for it. and wouldnt be the preheater hose sending exaust fumes to the carb since its not there and the air cleaner isnt on the carb. needless to say, im still clueless. -
i am still trying to figure out the issues with the engine in my brat. i cant get it to run right, its a lot closer than it was though. right now, when you give it some right foot, it hesitates for a second, then revs. it will hold the revs where ever you hold your foot on the pedal, granted, it needs new throttle cable. but i cant figure out how to get it running right so that i can get it on the road again. ive tried the distributor timing, rebuilt the carb twice, replaced the dead fuel pump, checked for vac leaks, and i am running out of ideas, ive been told by people out here that its everything from the accelerator pump to the distributor being bad. if this was an ea82t, it would most likely b e back on the road by now, but i have no real knowledge of the ea81 or carbs. timmy needs help.

good luck with the brat. i am still fighting with trying to figure out the ea81 in my brat. i am so tempted to just swap in the ea82t i have left over from my rx. at least i know how to work on and tune the ea82t, im lost when it comes to carbs. le us know how it all turns out, and take more pics of the brat, i want to see how it finally turned out. -

sounds like you know what you are doing for the most part. just take your time with it and maybe change the oil and spray some seafoam deep creek in the cylinders before youtry to start it. from my experience, the ea82t will try to run, even when it shouldnt. on a side note, we should try to meet up next month when i take my trip to southern va and into nc. -
BRAT registration, car or truck?
subyrally replied to MilesFox's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
mine is a stationwagon on the title, doesnt mention anywhere that it is a brat or light truck. im not even going to bring it up unless they ask about it from registering the vin. -
going back to the thing about the corsairs, the meth/h2o was for when they used nitrous or kicked the boost way up. the boost or spray was what cooked the engine, the h2o/meth injection kept the engine cooler so it wouldnt grenade as quickly, but it was still a very breif boost or the engine would pop.

i lust that. i only hope that my brat comes out that nice. do you have any more detailed shots of the suspension set up in it? i am going for a full 5 lug swap and coil overs on all four corners when i am done with mine. -

ea 82 ohc engine wont start
subyrally replied to freasboarder's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
ive seen it not fire it the timing belts arent right, even just one of em. one thing a lot of people sometimes get caught up on, did you make sure to do the timing belts opposite of each other? when its timed for tdc on #1, the dot should be pointing up on that cam and down on the other cam gear. only reason i remembered this is cause ive missed that one before as well. good luck man, im sure someone else will chime in and give some better info than i can, but for the moment, thats all i can think of. -

might help to get some more details, what is it doing when you try to start it, or what isnt it doing? also, double check all your connections, ive noticed that the distributor plug can easily go un-noticed and remain unplugged. also double check your timing belts, make sure the distributor is set to top dead center of #1 (front passenger side), and also make sure that the engine harness is tight, ive had that one slip loose before on mine. other than that, i cant think of anything else with out knowing the symptoms. -
doesnt sound too bad, you might want to post some pics of the rusted areas. my brat needed new rockers on thepassenger side and a couple chuncks on the driver side, as well as about 1/3 of the floor pan and it has a few other small spots here and there. dont let the west coast people make you think any less of your brat, they are spoiled with very little rust and a surplus of clean subies. definatly dont let any one try to scare you, ive seen these cars on the road in conditions that would cripple any other car out there, and they jsut keep on going along. just get some sheet metal and a good weler and go to town on it, you will be just fine.

you know that they would be the ones starting what ever we are going to be facing, whether it be nukes or hoards of zombies, everything comes from china.

why does that sound familure? -
great, you had to mention zombies, http://forums.nasioc.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1422511 i just got over that obsession, lol just make sure you keep a machete and only used silenced firearms if facing zombies. but back to the point, the thought of emp scares me. id hate to loose access to the usmb. id be feinding by the end of the first day. that and i need my music collection, most of which is on my pc.

get a brass mesh screen and cover your entire garage in it, basically making a brass cage. should help you out if your at home when things go down. but it might not be as easy to do with the car itself. i guess you could cover the car, but i think you would have to keep the mesh suspended at least an inch from the body of the car. at least, i tihnk thats how its done. but there might be more needed to complete the emp protection. either that, or keep a spare set of the electrical componenets in a protected box somewhere to swap out after everything else is fried.

the brat did its job, you came out in good shape and it took the blow. did exactly what it should have done. it can be replaced, it would be a little harder to replace you.
-
i know about hte plug thing, granted, since i didnt have anyhing else to put in it at the time, i ran it for al itte bit with the cracked plug. i got a full set of ngk vpower plugs yesterday and i need to order another ngk iridium plug to replace the broken one. i plan on using the iridium plugs again once i get everything runnign right. if i can get out to work on the car tomarrow, ill try to test the diaphram if i can. it running though, granted, its rough and there is still a noticeable hesitation. i am going to try resetting the mixture and idle tomarrow, i think its runnig a bit rich as it is, which ive heard could be part of the hesitation. ill find out tomarrow after i finish making the waterfall/pond thingy for my mom, lol.

ngk is the only plugs that i use, dont have a vac pump yet, but i might go buy one if i cant get ahold of one. and as far as the last question goes, huh?
