Looking for some simple welding advice.
subyrally replied to Gyoas759's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well, first off, take your time and practice on scraps before you attempt to weld in the car. if you are looking for an inexpinsive welder, there is a shop here in frederick called hg welding that sells a wire feed mig welder set up for about $300. looks like its a pretty well equiped machine, has wire speed, gas feed and heat controls and comes withthe gas regulators. i am actually going to get one as soon as i get some moenys. when you get around to cutting out rust, make sure you get all of it and when you make patched, dont try to cover the larger holes in one patch, use multiple smaller patches and take your time. also get weld through primer to coat the back sides of the patches so they dont rust out from the inside where you cant paint after welding. i would also reccomend talking to a local body shop or restoration shop, basically, find the hot rodders and talk to them about rust repair. good luck. -
where are you guys fnding 5spd tranies for $125-$150? the best price ive heard around here is about $250-$350 for the trans alone. i really want to find a full time 4wd dual range with dif lock like my friend has in his rx.

PICS,were did the wheels go?
subyrally replied to mykingcrab's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
wow, you guys got some super clean and organized yards. the yard i go to you are lucky if the car is on dry ground or above ground, lol. the yard i frequent i tihnk was once a farm about 50-60 years ago when the yard first started up, not they have thousands of cars quietly rotting away. hell, some of the car have been there so long that they have full grown trees coming up trough em. -
wow, one hell of a deal. i got my brat from another member for $350 since it had soo much rust in the floors. ive almost had it a year and i havent even driven it once . i am thinking that once i get my tax return, i might finally be able to finish it, or get a new welder anyways. keep us updated and take lots more pics. and nice lookin brat:grin:

Understeer + wet roads...
subyrally replied to Caboobaroo's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
doesnt using a larger front sway tend to promote under steer? eh, i might be wrong, but best i can recall, upsizing the front leads to understeer and upsizing the rear leads to oversteer. -

thats odd, my rx was very nuetral handling. the only time it ever understeered was in snow if the wheels locked up.as long as the wheels were spinning, it was like telepathy, it went where ever i wanted it to without effort. now my impreza understeers in snow and rain like none other, lol. -

i am really tempted to get the swap bits from the yard i go to, but they tend to be pricey -
another thing i was thinking, if you are getting spark at the disty, but its not leaving, have you checked to make sure the rotor is turning? like i said, i can help you out with a distributor, but it really doesnt sound like its the problem. have you checked the driver side timing belt? sorry to sound like a broken record, but it really doenst sound like the disty is bad. but if you really want, i can sell you the one i have, not sure if i will buy it back cause i really needs the money right now, butthats another story. before you go through the effort of buying the disty, check a few more things first. and listen to GD, he is rarely ever wrong.

i have to agree with that, as much as id like to sell you one of my spares cause i could use some $, i dont want to make you spend money you dont have to. if you are getting spark at the cap but not the plugs, then its most likely the cap, rotor and wires. try giving it a good tune up and see if that fixes it, just from what you said, i think that should be all you need.
-
i might could have what you need, have a few around i think, and ive even got a hand polished ditsy for the ea82. ith any of the ditsies i have, you will need to swap over the seal at the top, cap, rotor, and plug at the bottom. i think there are like three different plug types, but they are all the same at the distributor end, so that is why youll need to swap those out. let me know what you need and what not, obviously, if you want the polished ditsy, its a bit more than the others cause it took a while to shine up, lol.

thats what i was trying to say, lol. i should have known what it was called since i just unpacked one last night. on that note, dont leave car parts in the shipping boxes in the bed of a brat during winter, that was nasty.

Where to Find Fel-Pro PT Head gskt
subyrally replied to Joey Joe's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i can get em through advance auto parts, i think they are over night availability for me, if you cant find em, let me know and ill see if i cant help you out. -
if that is what i think it is, its the anti backfire valve, or something along those lines. think it keeps the engine for backfiring under deceleration.

only cost me about $50 to get a few rocker chunks made at a metal shop, just take them a bit of the original for comparison.

thanks for the wallpapers

Running My EA81 W/No Exhaust.
subyrally replied to markjw's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
you might could do what ive seen on some race cars, mount it at the back of the car. get a metal core cat, supposedly has a lower temop light off as well as out flows a standard cat. mount that where the muffler usually sits. would keep it off the pointy bits when the terrain isnt the smoothest and would also have the nifty side effect of being able to see it glow at night:Flame: .... granted, ive only seen a few cars run like that and they were all 300-400 hp turboed monsters, so im not sure how well it would work out on a naturally aspirated car. -
