85 Brat Front End Vibration
subyrally replied to coylethebarbarian's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
it could also be somewhere in the wheels nd tires. perhapse a rim might be lightly out of round or bent somewhere, or it could have lost a wheel weight somewhere along its way. ive had all that happen to me:( but yeah, also check the inside of the rim, might have axle grease hanging around, doesnt take much to unbalance a wheel and cause vibation. -
hmmm, sounds interesting. on a side note, dont you run a supercharged svx?

Wanna see what neglect looks like?
subyrally replied to ezapar's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
not neglect, off roading fender clearance./ -
not sure why it hasnt come up yet, but have you checked the fuel lines to make sure they are in the right places? the fuel line from the filter goes to the line in the top center, the return goes to the left of that and the vapor line goes to the right of the fuel line.i just thought about that and remembered that i did that once when i wasnt paying attention. it had simular results.

intake manifold pwns me
subyrally replied to subyrally's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
subi81, that looks almost exactly like what we are dealing with. so it just takes leverage, hmmm. it certainly is stubborn though. -
so yeah, iam trying to figure out how to get the intake manifold off of an ea82t, which ive done many times before. but this time, i have a broken bold, the one behing the thermostat, next to the coolant passage. the bolt head brok off like 1 mm below the surface of the manifold. i think its the crud thats built up in the bolt hole that is holding hte manifold down, but we couldnt get it to come off of the heads at all. the driver side would come up just a hair, but the passenger side seems to still be firmly attached. im sure that if we can get hte manifold off of the heads, we can get the bolt out without much effort, but yeah, the manifold is stuck. has anyone else had to deal with the manifold getting stuck in this manor? we needs some help.

UAFC: Ultra Air Fuel Controller
subyrally replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
and this is why Will is the man!! not that i ever lost hope for hte ea82t, but now i know there is more of a chance to do what i want to do with mine when i get it built up. on a side note, when did you move to mt. airy? i have family in that area. -
good luck and take lots of pictures.

in our area, ngk plugs range in price from $1.50 - $10.00 depending on what you are after. the regular platnum plugs are like $3 each. where as the iridium plugs are $7 and the "laser platnum" plugs are $10. the benefits of being an advance auto retail parts pro. granted, i quit there in march. i highly reccomend hte ngk iridium plugs. they are 6 times stronger than platnum and give a spark. as far as subaru saying that platinum should be changed at 60k or less, i think thats bs, that is the change interval on your standard copper core plugs. accourding to ngk, platinum is a 100k plug, the iridium plugs should last even longer, but i havent found the exact info on that yet. either way, i reccomend the irridium plugs, ive personally had very good luck with them. on top of my use of them, every customer that i sold them to from advance, came back a couple weeks later to thank me for the heads up on em. thy always said that they got better milage and a little more power (butt dyno)

the oil lines should line right up, and the coolant lines might need lengthening, but its just hose, so you should be fine.

UAFC: Ultra Air Fuel Controller
subyrally replied to WJM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
looks like you could actually benefit from it. if you are running larger injectors and an adjustable fpr, the ecu most likely isnt going to keep up with the fueling, either running too rich or too lean, at least with with afc of some sort, you can manage the fueling of the engine. it gives you the opportunity to shorten or lengthen the injector pulses, depending on your needs. only reason i didnt have one on my rx was that no one i knew of made one that worked with the old school suby maf's. personally, i would like to run megasquirt. but for the moment, if this will help keep the engine from leaning out on me, ill take it. hey Will, thanks for posting this. ill look into it, when i get my car on the road and get the ea82t built back up, ill let you all know ohow well it works out, unless someone else beats me to it, which im sure they will cause im still poor. -
How did you break your first Subie??
subyrally replied to The Beast I Drive's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i wouldnt say that i broke my impreza, i blame that damn deer hanging out on the highway. $4300 in front end damage. samshed the lights on the driversside, buckled the hood, crushed the grille into the radiator, pushed the fans into the belts, cracked the radiator, and a few other little things here and there. and that was at 65 mph. i didnt feel the impact at all. granted, i actuall accellerated when i saw the deer since i had no chance to acoid it and i didnt want it in my lap. the car did what it was made for, saved my pretty face from deer butt. -
yeah, if i get another ea82t equiped car, i am going to try out my idea of running the twin tube bit over the rear axle but keep it 3" from the turbo to that point, and then ill have just a regular 3" performance muffler after the axle. im sure its doable, just need to find the time to try it, and a car to try it on.

Brat living in New Hampshire...
subyrally replied to Rocha's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
nice brat. also diggin the vw's. i wouldnt mind getting ahold of an old camper, could have fun with one of those. -
h mm, just thought of this, but i hadthe same issue with my rx a few years back, i had checked the fuses and they were all good, but the ignition fuse, i believe the third from the left on the second row of fuses, wasnt hitting the contacts in the fuse box, double check the fuses and check the connctions for em as well.

i never did bottom out on speed bumps, that last flange is just before the axle. the only issue was that it was the lowest place on the car uner the axle and i had to be careful of rocks and potholes when i went to the mountians. it is at stock height with 15" pugs and 205-50-15 nitto tires. rarely ever had any issues with ground clearance, then again, it was usually all about picing a line when in places that could be an issue. i was thinking about trying to get something like the perrin twin turbe exhaust for getting under the axle, that way instead of one large pipe hanging down, there would be two smaller pipes side by side under the axle into a collector attached to the muffler. that way, could also opt to run the pipes over the axle, i think anything less than 2" will fit without hittingthe axle like my old 2.5" exhaust did. not sure if ill have another rx or not, but if i do, i think ill try it out. the brat is going to have different exhaust when i am done. what do you guys think of that?

i know that the hangers had to be relocated and i think a few spots needed a slight bend added to em. the down pipe had to be lengthend about 3", but that was causeof my turbo mounting. basically, i just took it to my local subaru tuning shop, talked to the guy that runs the place and said that id like it to fit the car a bit better.
-
where in md were you living? actually, i do:grin: or as connie (bucky92) says, its a maxwell house coffee can on there, hey, i just noticed that the bumper of my impreza is in that pic, haha, i need sleep.

it was an ebay special 4" bellmouth into a full 3" all the way back. took some work to get it to fit, but it was worth it. here is alink the an ebay auction selling the same kit that i used on mine. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/02-06-WRX-STI-UP-PIPE-3-STAINLESS-DOWNPIPE-CATBACK_W0QQitemZ120193911265QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item120193911265 good luck and take lots of pics of your progress.

hmmm, thats odd, maybe my car was cursed or something. idk, when i mounted the turbo to the stock manifold, pulled the stud and welded it back where it was needed, the top of the trans was in the way of the turbo outlet. just barely. i remember that it was a pain to get things liined up right. granted, in the pics i posted, the first one is with the manifold that i tried to build myself, the second on was after i had a local shop build it. rotating the turbo slightly made it really easy to work on and route the plumbing. the downpipe was from an ebay turboback that i got for my car, listed for the wrx/sti. but the dp had to be lengthend about three inches and the top section rotated to match the turbo.

i would highly reccomend getting a custom manifold made up for the td04, it would also help to raise the tubo up a little bit and move it backward about an inch past the stock location. i found that if you try to mount it in the stock turbo location, there are a few bits that get in the way. mainly the transmission. that was my set up, worked well with the stock intake manifold and the spyder manifold in the pics.
