my brat is going to be built for the street and track, so no lift involved. it will be stock or lower. my next trick is going to be figuring out how to get a wrx engine x-member to fit properly so that i can run newer suspension and such. i have the front x-member and control arms from an 02 wrx and the rear sub-frame and suspension components from a 2008-2012 wrx. once i get everything fit, i should be able to fun coilovers from any 08+ wrx. the engine and drive train is from a 2002 wrx, granted, ill be trying to use the LSD unit from my 86 rx, i am pretty sure the center chunk is interchangeable. i have finally got most of the parts together, now i just need to make room in the garage and start putting it together, lol.

The Awesome Older Generation Picture Thread

Look at that, my old RX made it in here, lol. i miss driving that car, not trying to fix it every other day though, lol. it was great, shot 3' fireballs out the tail pipe on the highway, lol. blew the head gaskets and had some hoses burst as i was pulling into the parking lot at work a few years ago, had it towed home and it got stripped to a rolling shell for the paintball field to use as a bunker. i love that the pic with my rs peeking out in the background was used, lol. that one died from head gasket failure the week after the RX. i couldnt afford the cost of a new engine at the time, so it got sold and i bought a new wrx back in 09.. -
85 Subaru Brat Transmission Issue
subyrally replied to millhouse's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
if you need a trans, i might have one. where in W.Va are you? i am in Frederick Maryland. granted, the trans is still in my brat and does have somewhat high milage, but it worked the last time the brat ran. -
still trying to work on this, i have done a little more to it, but lately, i have been side tracked with trying to buy a house. i need to get out of my mom's basement, lol. i am looking at a house that has two work shops and a garage on the property, but it might be hard to get it right now due to my agent screwing me over last week. needless to say, if she ever calls me back, i am telling her that our agreement is terminated and she is fired as my agent. i am going to talk to the owner of the property about working something out since he pulled it from the market last week to do work on the house. i havent been ignoring the project though. i have been tracking down parts that i need to get it put together. if i get the house i want, i will be able to get more work done on the car since i wont have to have good weather to work on it, lol.

well, i know i have been lazy lately, but this weekend, i finished stripping the interior and under the hood. the next step is the transmission and drive line. i am hoping that i can get a little done each night after work. after the drivetrain is out, i can get to the gas tank and i think that should do it for the teardown. the next part will be fabrication, or at least, figuring out how to get everything from the wrx to fit. i am talking with a friend of mine that is a machinist about getting some custom front and rear control arms so that i can use the impreza brakes and suspension bits i have for the car. i figure if we can make the parts from high strength aluminum, it will save some weight and still be as strong if not stronger than the stock parts. sorry i dont have any pics to post up yet, i might snap some tonight if i can. not really much to look at though, just a bunch of random parts and whatnot being stored in the brat until they are installed.

welcome to the party! is it sad that i kinda liked the shiny paint job? granted, i would never do that on my own car, lol.

Need HID Headlamps - I can't see!
subyrally replied to rdweninger's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
be careful, the higher the light temp number, that less light output there actually is. 3000k is actually the brightest you will find readily, but it is a very yellow light. 4300k is the color that most cars that come with HID lights come with. once you start getting in the higher ranges, the light gets bluer and eventually purple/pink. ther are a few sites around that have the proper conversion kits, but they arent cheap and require fabrication to use. like was said before, it isnt recommended to put HID bulbs into the stock headlights since the lenses arent good for the way the bulb produces the light. you will get a really bad beam of light with massive glare and hot and cold spots in the light coverage. the kits i have seen come with reflector housings and the projector lenses from oem HID headlights. from what i have seen, with a little bit of time, a dremel and some good epoxy, you can mount the projectors into the stock headlights with good results. i will try to find the website that had the full kits on it as soon as i can. good luck -

long time no post, need some advice on the Brat
subyrally replied to garner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i remember reading something about his passing, i was deeply saddened by the news. i had talked to him a few times when he was building the brat and we bounced ideas back and forth for our projects at the time. good luck with finishing the brat, i would like to see more pics of it as it is now. -
i know you said that your doors are better, but how bad are the doors on the hatchback?

looking at the xmembers, the mounts for the control arms look to be about the same, just moved a bit, lol. the real question i have, since i am looking into doing some simular work to my brat, if i swap the cross memebers, can i still run the brat control arms or do i need to switch to ea82 control arms? i actually just remembered that i have a spare turbo crossmember from a stash of rx parts i have. so if i can swap that over, and still be able to use the rest of the parts, ill be a happy camper and i wont have to cut and weld the stock cross member for the exhaust.

soon going to try to finish pulling the drivetrain this weekend. gotta figure out how to get the axles out without lifting the car, lol. i should also get a roll pin punch, that might help, at least a littel bit, lol.
