combining xt's for the perfect car
rpholz replied to rpholz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
why would i have to retain the 86 intake? well i've come to the realization that I can only keep and drive 1 car at a time. soo well, if someone feels like they want to give me an ej motor they can have the 89. john how much would you want for your trans and how far in Kentucky are you? relative to florida that is. and yea, your right gary i just want to do something. something to tinker with. seeings how i have a work van i can do without a car. atleast long enough to finish something -
combining xt's for the perfect car

OH and pick up a mig welder and make my own custom exhaust -
So I have an 86 XT DL currently without motor. Stupidly clean car, zero rust. super nice. then I have an 89 XT GL 32k miles nice car but the more i look the more rust i find in different places, really fustrating. so my thoughts: while the motor is out of the 86 ill clean the engine bay and make it really nice, then take the perfect running EA82 n/a with spyder intake, swap it into the 86, in the mean time pick up a new clutch and get the flywheel lightened, then swap in the rear end from the 89 and leave the fwd 5 speed in the 86 untill i can find a 5spd 3.70 geared trans. go through and swap the best of both until I get one perfect car. like show room condition. You know I don't know what it is about the 86 but I could never part with the thing, it's like one of the family. my mechanical child:lol: soo whatcha think? I know the general answer will be EJ it, well i don't have the funds nor the resources for it. so i'd much rather keep the ea for just a fun car. a DD

I personaly thought the paint comment was hilarious. I would of painted the valve covers yellow, then cam housing black then heads yellow and block black. and you would of had a bumble bee. or a hornet. then you could put decals that say HORNET and noone would get it. lol or perhaps that's a stupid idea. either way. good job on the build, looks good

well this might be on the back burner for a few years, starting full time college to get some credits to make up for my Good Enough Diploma and join the USMC. Semper Fi:grin:

WOW I am a complete idiot, I've wanted to touch up my wiper on my XT but never did because i didnt want to remove it. never thought of putting newspaper behind it. sometime I fail to see simple logic:banghead: AND SubaruJawn, sooo you take time to put some chrome letters on your grill but not to fix that HUUUUGE gap on the bumper? i realize it hit a deer? you said? but some zip ties will fix that right up:grin:

AH, that's the post i knew i wanted to comment on but forgot. yea i didnt figure that would last. wasnt that like exhaust tubing or similar? -
such a downer GD, he never said he wanted to build a fast rally car:lol: but yea, sounds like either a tampered with rx or you meant XT and if you meant XT, it's a terrible platform and will take it away for you at no cost. lol i'd start sourcing XT6 hubs and what not for a 5 lug conversion and start saving/researching a EJ22 swap if your serious best of luck!

indeed. the 3.8 is a good motor but in a FWD application they are a pain to change the plugs! so still taking ideas. digging a 13b idea. but still not certain.
-
did you have the 3.8 turbo motor. cause those are sweet.
-
i could do a modified 4.3 gm motor, it would be shorter and easier to work with. turbine MIIIIGHT be overkill. lol

H1 V8 pricing 2.8 liter V8, approximately 400 hp. Engine is inclusive of hardware as described below.... $27,700:eek::eek::eek:

now this is just beyond cool. i thought about a motorcycle engine for a minute, but i just dont think it would have the torque to get the car moving. take a 1000cc inline 4 cocked sidewise with those 4 carbs ooohhh, it would look so cool.
-
AHHH new thought. I used to work for a guy that specialized in old VW engines. he offered me a oversized, dual carb, crazy motor. (and still owes me a paint job) im not sure of the HP numbers you can acheive from one of those motors but i think it would be cool.
-
i just see so many EJ convertions and EA rebuilds. i just want to be like "F you ive got a V8!" lol. kinda like a novelty car i suppose. who knows what ill do. i sure don't. all i know is i have a rust free 86 XT DL waiting for something.
-
dammit. so what else is there?
-
well the steering now has a manual rack, being a DL. so i image turning will be a PITA.

there will definatly not be a subaru trans in there. if the rear end wont take it ill tub the rear and go with a ford 9" i know there is more to it than dropping a motor and going. i was thinking subframe connectors, and as much bracing as possible. i can weld. should be fun. and realisticly i can find a motor and trans for cheaper than i can find one good subaru engine, and more than likely have it shipped to me. again im just throwing around the idea.
