Unfortunate Events... Just a feeler.
rpholz replied to 88RxTuner's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i would hold onto it if i were you i have countless things that i sold (cars, rifles, amps, moped, xbox) for way less than i could of got for it because "i just needed the money" it's really not worth it. things always seem to work out in the end, one way or another, no matter how bumpy the path may seem. -
LMAO! i know when i very first got my xt i did the usual and played with every switch and gadget in the car and since the paint had faded on the parking light and hazard light switches i just remember switching them on and off a million times going "what the hell are these?!" and later going "that car is broke the lights wont turn off!!!"

Fuel delivery issues, loud fuel pump EA82T
rpholz replied to derburger's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
was the line between the tank and pump clear? did that line collapse possibly? was it completely fine until 200miles down the road? is there possibly bad gas in there? on a side note thanks for the advice on the hose clamps for my xt's tank. only time will tell if i come up with the same issues as you again. -
lmao very true but if i had the money i'd have a 86 xt with the full drivetrain of an 08' STI and some pretty kick rump roast paint job

i have a 86 xt mpfi 2wd and have recently found a wrecked 87 gl-10 turbo in the junk yard and was wondering if i got the manifold, turbo, downpipe, intake boot, and vacum lines. what else would it take to put that on my xt? ecu? mas?

rule of thumb for cutting springs?
rpholz replied to hatchsub's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
on my old 94 honda del sol i cut about 3 rings out of it before i got it to sit where i wanted and it still rides fine stiff(but i prefer it stiffer) as far as how much to cut it id start with one or even 1/2 of one ring and keep with the trial and error. it'll take a while but being free usualy takes that extra time. in my opinion just buying some coils is the way to go. you run into many different things when you cut them -
damn that car looks sick... need to get my xt that low!

Leaking water question need help!!!!!
rpholz replied to one eye's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
did you check the pump thouroghly before installing it? i once had a pump that when i installed it pushed more water out of it than the old one. the little holes on the top and bottom that open up when it goes bad where those closed off? -
actualy your spot on as to what i was going to do i was going to extend the line and through in a clear one if i can and zip-tie it to the side of the fuel pump bracket so i can inspect it perioticly(sp?)
-
*UPDATE* so i thouroghly went through the tank and cleaned it to the best of my ability (lets just say it included compressed air, muratic acid, water and rocks... yes rocks:grin:) the amount of straight crap that came out of there was simply rediculous 3 out of the 4 smaller holes were completely clogged. i am going to let the tank sit for a day to dry, and tomorrow fish the rest of the rocks out of it and see if it worked. and if so i have a method of cleaning a ruined tank for less than 15 bucks. cross your fingers!
-
hey i apretiate the detailed instructions, yea just me if i had the 200 buck id definatly prefer to buy a tank but i will be cleaning it by myself with lots of different chemicals till i find one that works lol but hey ill hit you up if i have any further questions. thanks - ryan
-
lol yea a leaf would definatly be a hard culprite to find. yea its just been sitting for so long that when you look in the tank you cant see any shiny metal, but i am way to broke to buy a new tank. i do hear a faint sound that sounds like a vacuum leak but then again i am not really all that sure how quite the little cover over the mpfi engines operate. anyway the tank will be dropped tonight and ill post whatever i find to see if this is the problem(i just want it running right!)
-
well that is the thing the sending unit was out. so i know it had a vent. idk once i drop the tank i am going to thoroughly inspect every line to and from the tank.

ok so my 86 xt mpfi non turbo is starting to be a real pain in the a$$. it likes to cut out the fuel at random times, but lately it wont make it past 1500 rpms after about 15min worth of driving, so i figured id completely drain the tank and start with completely fresh gas (keep in mind it has been sitting for a while and has a brand new fuel pump and filter) so to drain it i did it the lazy way and hot wired the pump and pulled the line off the motor side of the filter (so i can throw the gas in my honda cause it will run off anything) and as it was pumping about 5-10 min in it starts to pulse and a lot of bubbles came through the line( and there was still plenty of gas in the tank) it seems to me that there is a clog or some sort of restriction. so my question is: is there a screen in the tank that can be replaced? and if i drop it is there a larger door (other than the sending unit) that i can get into? the tank is quite gummed up and i am sure this is the problem. seeing how i am broke i need to clean it not buy a new one. and the junk yards around here punch holes in the tanks to drain them so that won't work. ah... why must i have a subaru so badly? lol

SPFI Brat running w/few bugs
rpholz replied to ihscout54's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
in my mpfi xt the fuel pump was super loud and it would cause the car to cut out quite often. replaced it with a new one and now it runs just fine. but since the new one was of a different size it rattles in the carrier just ever so slightly and now you can hear it inside but not outside. so if your brat decides to hesitate real bad and not want to go over 3k rpms one day check out the pump and as far as the air filter, the oil is what actualy catches the dirt and grime that goes into it. but as far as i know the oil will not go through it and too the maf. but dont quote me on that lol -
well problem fixed, at least on my xt, replaced the pcv spark plugs and coil, didnt do anything then i noticed the fuel pump was really freaking loud all of the time inside and out of the car so i broke down and finally spent the hundred bucks on a new one and runs like a top..... FINALY!!
-
ahh! it just stops. lol i am having the exact same issue with my 86 xt mpfi non turbo and am looking for an answer with minimal amount of spending.

new to forum got a couple of questions
rpholz replied to rpholz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
After I replace the tank I'll open up the old one with a grinder and see how bad it was. Not saying this is your problem but I had a similar issue. hey man i appretiate any imput i can get. let me know how the tank looks once you crack it open. i think the fresh fuel i put in there is a little questionable too, seeing how i live 500 feet from a river and the gas station isnt to much farther away there has to be some water in there. -
new to forum got a couple of questions
rpholz replied to rpholz's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
well i threw the coil in there and it seemed to help with startup idle and low rpms, but again cause of the whole fuel situation i cant turn real high rpms yet. i just think if i run it for a good bit of miles it might clear up. but do to the lack of registration right now i am restricted to my neighborhood. i was also wondering the recemended fuel rating for the car. thanks -ryan -
Hey how ya'll doing? I'm new here and new to Subaru's just picked up a 86' XT with the EA82 non-turbo:mad: for 200 bucks. the car had been sitting for several years and needed a fuel pump. i replaced the fuel pump, fuel filter, cleaned up a couple grounds and changed the muffler, spark plugs/wires and oil. i also drained 90% of the gas out and threw in fresh gas and a couple additives. it's been improving with every mile put on it. but my question is the car when you floor it kinda stumbles at 3k and 4k rpms but pushes through it. is there something i need to take into consideration or is it just the old gas working its way out? and also i have a divorced coil for a 454 chevy, if i put this on my car will i see any improvement in spark or is it just a waste of my time. thanks for the help and great forum:) -ryan
