It does handle well in snow

Yeah, I can imagine. FWD rules in snow. Versus RWD that is. -
Ice building on windshield removal tip
viceversa replied to viceversa's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
>>> Tip your seat back and drive like a pimp. Lat time I tried that, I broke the seat (although it was a Tempo) -
It is rather cold here in January. Last Jan, we once had it drop to 9F and this Jan, we have it in the teens. Overnight, right about 20F. In the summer, just the converse, close to 100F. I think I will go with 5/30 this time.

Ice building on windshield removal tip
viceversa replied to viceversa's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
No, it is working right. The way I seat I look through the top part of the windsheld, where the blower does not seem to make it. It does defrost it in the middle. Which made me drive like an old man, bending my head down, looking through the opening. -
Loyale 92, 101K on EA82, 190K on the rest I put the cheapest stuff I can find in local Walmart, sometimes SuperTech 10/30 although this time I am thinking I will go with something a bit better, whatever is on sale. I like trying out different oils, not that I can tell any difference. I use Purolator Pure one filter. And I change oil at 4,000 miles, when I feel like it.

92 Loyale, 2wd auto. We got this snowy icy nonsense here in olde Virginny and to my discredit, I should mention I have been driving in this mess. The other night I drove for over 100 miles and saw about 5 cars only!!! These roads are in the country and narrow with lots of turns! Yet the Loyale endured. I think I've took it right to the limits of its ability, or rather to the limits of a heavy object travelling in these conditons. No sliding, nothing. I did slow down when turning considerably.

If it's only got 75 psi on one side and 115 on the other, I would be AMAZED if you have not had a decrease in power. My #1 cylinder has 75 in it, with the other three at 150, and I'm going to rebuild the engine because the loss of power and fuel economy has been dramatic. I pulled compression cold, this may be a factor. When it gets hot, it may change. I see no visible differences in anything. One other explanation is that my compression tool broke. In fact, shortly after that, it stopped showing any readings whatsoever, just a consant 0. It looks normal on the outside, so I don't know what the matter is.

well, there is a reason there were no bids on it. -
Upper radiator hose leak
viceversa replied to viceversa's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Good point! Radiator hoses are a regular maintenance item, I've been made aware of that! -
Found it, retightened the bolt, sliding it further, and it is gone. Wierd. I suppose I should not be surprised that hoses degrade after a while. Is it the mileage or the age that kills them? In either case, this Loyale is 12 years old and has 195,000 miles on these hoses.
-
How do I do check that, visually? Just look for obvious holes in the header? I didn't think that was possible to get a hole in the header, and how can you tell the gasket is bad?
-
Weird, the knock went away complete. Now, however, it sounds like I have a miss, or something similar. Something clicks in the area of distributor as far as I can tell and each click corresponds to a exhaust sound. It is intermittent without a pattern, but rather constant. That's the best I can describe it. The spark plugs and wires are from this summer. The second issue I encountered today, I found out out that the upper radiator hose was leaking right where it joints the radiator! It was dripping rather heavily. I retightened it so that seems to be resolved temporarily.

Thanks - I will get back to you shortly.

90 horses, which is significant. I never had any issues with an automatic.

gas mileage questions
viceversa replied to Buddythedog's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
92 loyale auto 29 mpg highway only very economical IMO -
Yes, it goes away when it warms up, actually a bit after it warms up, say in 15 minutes. I cannot differfentiate between knock and tick. I think it is a knock. I did not pay attention to oil pressure but will next time.

It has that SuperTech 10w-30 in it now. Running low - wouldn't surprise me.
-
Even when moderately cold, ie. low 30'sF It is EA82 from 92 Loyale with around 100K miles. I am not the main driver, so I don't really know what's going on with it, if it was ran low on oil or coolant or whatnot. It wasn't doing it last winter. Any ideas? I was told by someone that it is worn out and doesn't have much time left. Though I find it hard to believe at that mileage.

Best year wagon to look for
viceversa replied to subanoob's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
>>> The 92 loyale has had tons of problems... This one made it to 190K, but both engine and tranny had to be replaced. EA82 was running on 3 cylinders. Maybe due to leaded gas? Don't know. It lost all power, wouldn't accelerate. Tranny failed, don't know why. maybe because ran low on fluid? >>>>> Only FI for me after that. Every FI Subaru I've had has been perfect- hardly have to even touch them. Much more reliable and user-friendly, they are. For this 92 loyale, the final straw for me was when it developed some kind of weird and serious EFI problem at about 180,000 miles. It wouldn't start. I messed with it and messed it and still couldn't figure it out despite reading worthless Chilton's/Haynes. I knew it had to be either fuel or ignition. Probably injectors or something like that, but I didn't want to take the whole thing apart and take 3 days on it. My frustration reached its peak and I got another engine and had it installed, with all its EFI stuff. Worked wonderfully. New timing belts during engine install - broke a few weeks later due to incorrect tensioner. Or something like that, I don't know. Stranding the main driver in the middle of nowhere. A week later, it stranded me in the middle of freaking nowhere when the damn computer failed. Unbelievable. I am glad it wasn't in the middle of nowhere late at night as is often the case. This isn't Subaru though. Sadly, I no longer trust cars with high mileage, after about 150K miles. My other high-mileage experiences are similar. Anyway, to answer the original question --- 92-94 would be best years IMO -- *but* do consider Legacy, a nicer ride. And when get over 150,000 miles, consider every mile after that, free. This despite some running very high miles like 275,000 -- I don't believe this is typical at all. -

Losing transmission fluid
viceversa replied to viceversa's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Which side of the tranny is the vacuum regulator located? Neither Chilton's nor Haynes mention anything about it (like that comes as a surprise). -
92 loyale. Auto 3 speed tranny has either been fixed or replaced 2 years ago. I checked tranny fluid a month ago and whoa! It was 1.25 qt. low. I added it all. Checked it today and it was about 1/2 qt low. I checked it in park. Where is the fluid going?

I had almost the same thing happen yesterday. "loud clanking" and did not immediately go away when engine got warm. It took another 5-10 minutes for it to stop. But unlike your case, it did stop. No other symptoms - no loss of power, etc. The temp. was lower than usual, about 12F.
