Hello all. I will be pulling the ea82t out of my RX soon, and i would like to replace a good number of the seals and all belts. I do not wish to replace any of the pumps (oil/water) at this point due to money, so only rubber and seals.
So far this is my list:
-Oil Pump Seal
-Timming Belts
-Alt/PS/Ac belts
-Oil pan gasket
Is there anything else that i shoudl consider? I dont want it to be anything to hard or involved like the main crank seal or anything. I just want to do a simple reseal of a few things. So anything else that is easy enough to say "meh...might as well" while im down there?
Also, where can i get these parts? Is there an online store? I know for my toyota i have a dealer website that i get parts at-cost. Is there anything like that for these?
Thanks!
I would replace the "Mickey Mouse" gasket behind the oil pump. It has to be done with the timing belts off anyway, it's silly not to do it if your in there anyway. The gasket is only about $2.00.

Is it wet and oily?
It may just be time for a rebuild. Could be bad rings or valve stem seals. I had the same problem on #4 with one of my hatches. I didn't want to deal with rebuilding the motor so I just kept spare plugs around and changed the plug when it got too fouled.
My 87 gl feels like it's running on 3 cylinders again. I put new spark plugs in, but not new spark plug wires. it's the #3 plug, it's just not firing. Do you think that after the first plug stopped firing, the new plug temporarily fixed the prob but after a while even that wouldn't fire? the wires don't seem to look that old..... distrubitor? the idle is becomming eratic too. maybe I should check for vacuum leaks? thanks for any helpJordan

A while back, a mechanic who has worked on soobs since the 360 was in prod. told me that they do stretch - will pro'lly replace mine soon as it is orig. and I don't want it to snap on me unexpectedly
They stretch,
I put 170,000 miles on my original one in the '83. I finally replaced it while doing another job on the car. I got a lot more adjustment and it felt like it had been greased! I had no idea how stiff my old cable had gotten. A new one was only $20.00 USD and it was a breeze to replace.

Why do they always have these on Sundays?!
A brothers gotta go to Church!
I'm not gonna run , when I get my mods done then perhaps. I have heard lifted vehichles are ok now. I believe they changed the rules again........not possitive though....... -
Sorry Flow,
I should have been watching this forum!
Good luck Bro'
And me, I was there! It was really nice too. I was glad to find the Subaru table even though me and Connie tried not to over crowd it. By the way, your wedding made a good excuse for the best road trip I've had in a long time. We even stopped at the tattoo convention in Vancouver on the way (and both left tattooless). -
I love WA state. You have to pass a sniffer test, which is pretty forgiving. That's it. I suppose they have laws about engine swaps, but every time I go in for emissions (been like, 6 times now between all my cars) They've never popped the hood.
Also, if you live in certain counties, emissions is not required. Even the counties that DO require emissions are pretty lax. If I recall, Tex's parents accidently sent his wagon through emissions (they brought the Wagon's title in with another car, the guys didnt check the VINs closely).
Yep, in Washington if it passes a tailpipe test, it's a go. you'll only have trouble if you want an exemption due to repeated failure. Then, you have to pop the hood.
You could put blown V8 in it if it'll pass a tailpipe test. My El-Camino was originally a V6 car, I installed a built V8. It took a little tuning but it passed with flying colors.
25 years and older/5 years and newer are exempt

There's also a difference in the radio box. Some are part of the console, some are not.

This is about Non-Suby parts...
Someone on the Impala SS board said there might be a '91 or later (looks like the Chev cop cars) Caprice wagon there.
If someone is headed over there could you check and see if it has roof rack cross bars or a PERFECT front bumper?
Thanks,

It's not that bad and Hey Mark I resent that remark we already have something worse than Longview and it's called Salem
Hey! I practically grew up in Longview! But I've been to Tacoma.... I'm scared straight!
Oregon's not so bad...... As long as you're a Hippie or a Witch

Kennedy Engineering sells adapter plate to bolt a Subaru to a VW trans-axle. Do a web search for subaru conversion. There's also a subaru conversion group on Yahoo Groups that can help you with parts.Don, yes you can use the Subbie 4wd auto transaxle and you don't need any 'caps' over the front drive splined stubs sticking out unless your just concerned about cosmetic appearance. They are already sealed (no fluids will leak out). Your trike looks well engineered, have you been into this 'Ru' thing for long. I used to be the parts manager at J and B Motors down on Superior Ave. in the 1980's. I notice youv'e used an AE81 engine/trans combo on the trike, I still have a few 'oldy' parts stached. Maybe we can help each other out. Gary -
Hmm,
The cable in my '83 went 208,000 miles. It still didn't break, I replaced it because it was getting stiff.

Anybody know the correct/recommended helicoil and stud size for an EA82 exhaust stud replacement?
Thanks,

My son's 86 is running hot, I checked it out and found that the rad fan didn't seem to be kicking on when it should. I replaced the switch, it comes on but not until the motor gets SPOOKY hot.
Are there different temp ranges for the switches?
Is there one available that will kick in at a lower temp?
Thanks,

I had the oil separator, Thanks for coming back.
All is forgiven..
Contact me and I'll re-send my address.

Yeah,
What Caleb said! Have it re-bushed.

Make sure that you have the holes in the axle and shaft lined up correctly. It's possible to have them 180 degrees off. Look at the stub axle and the shaft. one side of the hole is flat and the other side is tapered. The two tapered sides have to go together or they will be off by one tooth. If you put it together like that, the pin will never come back out!

I usually use the copper stuff..... I didn't on this one last time because the instructions for the gasket said not to. So does this one but I don't care! I'll use it this time anyway, I'm getting way to good at tearing down these EA82s (this is only the third engine I've had in this car).....
I'm starting to seriously consider swapping a good ole' EA81 in if this happens again.

Well,
I pulled the head. It looks like there was a gasket failure near the #4 cyl. There was a spot where the gasket hadn't stuck to the head or the block when I pulled it off. I guess that's the problem.
I'll use sealer this time.......
-
Well, the head's coming off no matter what. I can't see any issue that won't involve that. I guess I'll just wait and see what I find.
-
Bummer............
My Son calls me up and say's his '86 wagon is being bad, (blowing smoke, running bad, blah, blah blah).
I go check it out, but it's blowing steam, not smoke. Water in the oil and vice versa.
The compression check is good, 180 to 200 PSI on all cyliders but #4 is wet.
I just did the head gaskets on this motor about 2000 miles ago. Pity......
What do you think, cracked head? head gasket?

You need ported vacuum for the disty. it provides a short advance before the centrifugal advance spins up. If you want more advance, increase the initial timing until it gets hard to start or pings. But I wouldn't on a Suby. I doubt you'd get enough extra ponys to make it worth the hassle of running higher octane gas. Try the 2wd disty it has a quicker advance curve.

That is interesting.... I was just looking for parts for my daughter's '81 210 DLX on ebay and found a brand new weber (actually Holley 5210) kit for the L series 4 cyl, with the adapter. It was only $75.00 and it never did sell. I bet it got relisted.........

Almost all have some kind of emmissions, all '81 and newer cars have at least some kind of air injejction system usually A.I.S. with reed valves. I think I heard once that all '81 cars had Cali emmissions (feedback carb W/Duty Solenoids) but that might not be right.
I do know that my '81 4X4 Hatch has Cali emmissions and feedback carb and it was sold new in here in Vancouver, Washington.
My '83 4X4 wagon has only an EGR and A.I.S.
My '83 2WD Hatch was the same.
I'd ask Richierich and his Dad.. They'll know
