I had the resonator break on both of my Oubacks. I took to my local family owned muffler shop, where I had them cut out the resonator, and replace with a piece of straight pipe, that they welded in. Surprisingly, both cars are no louder then with a good resonator. I don't know why Subaru bothers installing a resonator. It is not needed. Cost was cheap to repair this way.
I noticed at the junkyard that the Impreza 2.5i (n/a) 02/03 doesn't even have a resonator! You didn't have any issues with inspection? I may just do this..

The one at the junkyard is $10. It's just a matter of finding a decent one!
-
After looking at a diagram. I think it's actually the resonator.
-
I went to a little shop. They said the muffler has a small crack. They could weld it but the guy wasn't sure it would hold because of how thin the area is. It was $45 for that.

You might speak with Subaru. For a 2007 model with ~50K miles they might cover it under the emissions warranty. Can you see your glove box for the warranty booklet or go to Subaru.com and look it up.
Worth a try-thanks!
edit: its not covered.

I was planning on going to the junkyard this weekend.

Sorry I don't have an answer for you. What happened to your muffler? My 96 with 142,000 miles still has the original muffler with very little rust. No holes, no cracks.
No idea! I was driving on the turnpike and it started making a noise. Took it in and they said its cracked. Car has less then 50k too. I'm assuming something from the road damaged it.

I am wondering what years (I'm thinking 02-07) will bolt up? I'm looking to stay OEM. Any idea if a forester one will fit? My car is a wagon/hatch. Thanks!
-
I've had two 07 2.5i's. One sedan and currently a hatch/wagon. I haven't had any issues. The price isn't too bad either for our area.

Thanks!!! I found a set for sale at Tractor Supply

This is at a junkyard. Nothing was in the glove box.

Found these at the junkyard. What size security torx do I need to buy in order to remove these roof rails? Thanks!

My mom has a 2010 Forester and her seats are horrible.
A friend has an 03 Legacy and the seats are alright, but still not comfortable.
I'm not even sure exactly what it is about them, but they are so uncomfortable, they make my back ache. I think its the lack of bolster? Its totally flat, hard, with no back support. Even the adjustable support doesnt help at all.
I guess I was trying to figure out what other Subaru models will fit in the Outback that may be more comfortable.
-
The seats in my 2004 Outback are horrible and make my back hurt. I am looking into either replacing the seats or getting a padded seat cover. Since I figure it will be easier to go from Subaru to Subaru, does anyone know what other model Subaru seats fit the 04 Outback?
Thank you

I bought a new tensioner/pulley today. Hopefully replacing it will fix the issues. :-\

1997 Kia Sephia was my first car. I think it I got $150 for it when I went to trade it in.

I will have to give the dealer a call tomorrow. They both had exploded bearings in them

Found this simple diagram.
#5 was replaced on Monday
#2 broke today.
-
I did replace the belt when I replaced the other pulley just in case.
I'll have to take pictures tomorrow in the daylight so I can try and figure out which pulley broke now? Unless anyone knows of any diagrams online?
-
was the idler pulley a brand new one, and then that got destroyed, or was it a used one.
how tight are you putting the belt? maybe too tight.
or else you have a AC compressor seizing up.
saw your post on the other board with pics.
The Idler pulley that was replaced was replaced with a brand new one. Its a different pulley that got destroyed this time. I'm not even sure which one it was.its to the bottom left of the idler pulley.

2004 Outback, H6, 73k.
Saturday:
Started my car up this morning and it was fine. Got about 1/2 mile down the road:
1. The battery light came on
2. The emergency brake light came on.
3. The car will not let me turn, (I have to really really force the wheel).
Ugh. Any advice about whats going on? It did get pretty cold last night. I let the car warm up before driving it this morning. 2004 Outback..
Monday: Replaced idley pulley, new belt, new bolt. Car ran fine. All issues went away.
Tuesday: Drove car normally, about 100 milesish. Driving home, the car starts the same exact issues as above. Luckily, made it home. Open hood, a different pulley is now off and broken. WTF is going on???

I really want to get it My car insurance was $500 less then I thought it was going to be. I am going to talk to the BF tonight more about it as he is the one that will be doing most of the work on it lol
Do you know of any local junkyards??

Its an automatic. I guess the big thing thats holding me back..if I do replace the transmission and more things are wrong with it..idk if that will be worth getting it then... :-\
