Hmm I think I remember something about center caps. I never had them though. I would like to sell them as a set for $100 plus shipping. Im thinking I will have the tires removed as they will only add to shipping cost.

Even better, they are 13's! They were on my GL when I bought it. They are for sale

Picked up the last of my stuff from the old shop. I had a 86 GL parts car over there. I just grabbed the fenders, all doors (power windows!) rear hatch and the hood just incase I munch something on my 87.

So just before Christmas I moved my shop to my house. I had to pack up all of the parts into the GL and trailer her home. About a week before I had a new windshield put in cause now the car was to sit outside again. No biggie, few good rains, few days go by and I decide to look inside the car for something and I have 2 huge puddles of water on the floorboards. YAY. I was so pissed I just closed the doors and walked away. Finally just yesterday I decided to see what was going on. Luckily it was not the windshield but I did find 2 little spots where I missed welding when I patched in the firewall for the new hvac unit. I sealed those up with silicone and we'll go from there.

Thanks again for the comments. And copy away! Im here to share what Im doing to my car and if it works for others then go for it. I originally started this project as a beat to fit paint to match type of project. I didnt want to stress about it. I build race cars, trucks and rally cars for a living and all of my work is TIG. So with the GL I planned on just MIG welding everything. At the time I was in a shop where there was a MIG cause all I have is a TIG. So back then I was MIGing everything. Now I am at my own place so its just the TIG. It is an old gray monster, Lincoln Idealarc TIG 300/300.

Ok back to the GL Spent a day last week to get the lower radiator mounts done. I also tied in the existing skid plate frame to the factory frame rails which I boxed in. Pretty tight to the pulleys

Well I think I got my picture situation figured out. Hopefully I can continue with my story now test test

Well its been a few weeks and I have not had any time to put into the car. I did get some parts in the other day. I got the hazard button and now I have hazards and blinkers! I got the rear defrost button and the illumination control unit. Now my gauge cluster lights up.....and who ever own it before me put red lights in it, might have to change those out later. I have a rally car that I am building that is on a very tight schedule. Im hoping to get back to working on my car sometime in December. Not soon enough but gotta pay the bills.

Chop chop. Now the radiator fits. I am using the 2001 Impreza radiator and it is a few inches taller and a touch wider than the 87 radiator. I had to cut the lower core support sheet metal and that gave enough room for the radiator to sit lower and the hood shuts!

Ok I will make sure sender is grounded and hook up other wire to ej harness. I made sure I noted that I had a 1/2 tank of gas when I took the car apart. We'll see where that puts me. Now do I need the fuel temp to register to the ecu for proper AFR readings?
-
I hear ya. Im doing so many little things that are not being documented and I want to show them off. The 87 dash plastics is what I am still going to use, from there I am going to fit all of the 01 stuff to. Pretty much the guage cluster, hazard and r defrost buttons and the climate controls. The rest will be custom. A standard stereo head unit is too deep to fit now, not sure what Im going to do with that. 4wd and 4wd low will have new indicator lights. Im trying to mount my GPS up above the center vents and CB radio might be to the right of that. Switches for aux lights will be up where the GL heater controls were to the right and left of guage cluster.
-
Sounds good. Im just gonna keep posting progress with or without pics. Im getting excited at how close the wiring is coming to being done. Let me know if you need some cash to help pay for this fuel guage project. I appreciate all of your help

Yesterday I wired the wiper washer pump motor. Finished mounting the blinker/wiper switches to the column. Made a new mount for the 01 brake light switch because compared to the 87 switch it takes up a bit more real estate. I also did some preliminary dash fitting.

Insane, more reasons I wish I could leave Ca. We are at $4.80 ish for 91 !!! *edit* hi jack over. Read your entire thread and I have to say you did an amazing job restoring this 84. The Desert Fox rocks!!

Ok that makes sense. Ill see about wiring it into the harness. All week I've been on the hunt for a few items that I dont have. -illumination control module Found! -wiper switch is broken Found! -hazard button Found! -rear defrost button Found! -O2 sensor harness (on the trans) Still need! -pass rear 01 taillight wiring (wiring on taillight its self) Still need! I pretty much have the new harness completely spliced and installed. There are a few items I still need to do, but its only about a day away from being done. Then I will start fitting dash and radiator and eventually work my way to the exhaust.

I got the readings from my factory GL sender. The contact and copper winds were pretty black so we got some 1000grit and cleaned it up a bit to get a consistent read. Full read between 1.5 and 2.5 ohms Empty read between 105 and 110 ohms After taking the sender out I saw the fuel temp sensor also and was wondering how to hook that up to the 01 harness?
-
Awesome Im looking forward to trying that set up out. I've been trying to get ahold of an Impreza of the exact model but all my buddies that have them, have them as rally cars and I live an hour away from them. So I will get my readings today (thats the plan at least).

First the good news....I can turn the key and stuff works! Granted I dont even have the starter in or fuel pump but I wanted to make sure I can bury wires under the dash. Now that I was able to do a quick check of items with the ignition on I can install the dash knowing I shouldnt have to dig for wires. Bad news....well not really, just one of those moment where I could have saved my self some time. Instead of cutting and splicing the ignition wires I could have just unscrewed the back of the cylinder where all of the wires are soldered and just screwed in the 01 part to the 87 cylinder. Oh well, live and learn. So you need readings from an Impreza and from my GL sender, correct?
-
Ill see if my buddy has that connector off the trans. Yesterday I printed out descriptions and locations of all of the electrical items, I know there are a few other items that I may be missing. Thank you Kanurys for that link to the electrical stuff. I think things will start to fall into place real soon and Ill get those readings off the fuel sender from the GL soon.
-
Ok I found it. It is the oxygen sensor cord. So Im missing the wiring from there to the o2 sensors.
-
So Im over at the inlaws using a much faster computer than I have and Im looking through the links with the pdfs for the wiring diagrams and even though it says its for a 2001 Impreza they are showing a 2002 GD chassis car. Kanurys, have you had a chance to check these out? Im trying to figure out what a connector in the engine bay goes to. The connector in question comes through the firewall with harness on pass side. It is joined with the 2 (brown and gray) connectors that connect to the engine, plus the little ones that are for neutral and reverse lights to the trans. Also there is the connector for the speedo....now the kicker is there is another gray (similar in size to the 2 that connect to the engine) one in with the bundle. My assumption is that it is for the o2 sensors. I am trying to confirm this on the wiring diagrams.

The other side of the coin is I dont have a smart phone. However my 2 year contract is up and I will be switching providers and getting a smart phone to do all the updates a bit better. I thought technology was supposed to make our lives easier
-
Yeah the ignition seems pretty easy, providing it actually works. Ill definetly get the photos posted when I can. Not sure about the quantity of the senders??? It came off of a 2001 Impreza RS 2 door.
