I managed to get a few cut wires all sealed up and tucked away. Mostly abs wheel speed senor wires and fog lights. They are sealed up with adhesive lined shrink caps and tucked away into the harness in case I need them for what ever reason on some rainy day. From there I figured it was time to see if I can sort out the wiring to the ignition. I am keeping the GL column and ignition key and using 01 light, blinker and wiper switch deal. First I removed the GL light, blinker and wiper switch assembly to see how I could mount the 01 stuff. I have the 01 column with the switches too. I removed the 01 stuff then cut the bracket off the 01 column to see what would work from there. It looks like I can drill some holes and bolt the 01 bracket to the GL column which has some threaded holes, this ended up working out perfect. Now to the ignition....the GL has 5 wires coming out of the cylinder and 5 going to the connector. The 01 stuff has 5 wires coming out of the cylinder and 4 going to the connector, so all Im going to do is join the wires on the GL to become a 4 wire connection and plug into the 01 harness. Im hoping to do this tomorrow to see if I can turn the key and see what comes to life. Im not ready to fire the motor, I just want to see if I have power...etc.

Mine is going up high. I wont have a real glove box anymore because of the 01 hvac unit. Im thinking it will be right behind the glove box door. At least I will have easy access to it.
-
Got a fair amount of work done yesterday. I final mounted the harness under the hvac, ran the wiring through the firewall and hooked a few things up. Then started to pre-fit dash. Next is to make the new vent tracks for the dash.

Pure genius!!! Ugghhh my memory must be on its way out. I just went back to page 13 of my thread and duh!!!! I did take out the abs stuff just from the engine bay. I think I just left that plug inside to keep remind myself what I did. HAHA that didnt work. Ok now thats solved. I hate working on a project for a year here and there.
-
The plug is on driver side under dash. I think it maaaay be a interior dash harness to engine bay connection? In other news I just ordered some Raychem adhesive lined heat shrink to give my headlight splices a good chance at surviving the elements. I also ordered some adhesive lined heat shrink end caps for items such as abs and airbag wiring. I am just going to cut off plugs and cap the loose ends. I am NOT going to pull all those wires through the harness to trim the fat. So these little end caps should be perfect.

Awesome, thanks for the link. Now I just need my 6 year old laptop to show me the goods! Its a little slow these days. I really need to figure out whats up with some cut wires. There is a large flat wide blue plug with all of the wires cut (I would take a pic and show you but again my laptop is not letting me upload photos...yay). Im almost certain that they were for abs stuff but would like to know 100%.

Kanurys, do you have an online source to find some wiring info on my 01 harness? I went through the GL stuff before disconnecting the battery to log what the headlight, hi-beams, tail lights....etc but dont have that info on the 01 harness.

I built the filler box piece for the firewall. Still need to weld it. Next is to cut new holes for the harness to go through the firewall into the engine bay.

It sounds like I will still be able to get the car up and running with out the other stuff.....correct? I just need fuel pump. I know with out the rest I will have a CEL but that wiring will be easy to access. I tossed out my old carpet because it was pretty beat. Punch list to get her up and running *fill hole in firewall to finish hooking up a/c lines *mount radiator and a/c condensor *fabricate new duct work under dash *do final lay in of wiring harness under dash *make final wiring splices Fire it up and see what I did wrong Then I can more or less do final assembly My goal is to go snow wheelin on January 1st!

Yes please! I want to do it all and right the first time.

Spent a few hours at the shop today and with the help of a friend moved some cars around. More importantly moved my gl back into the shop Now it is out of the elements and I can work on it again after hours!!

The Impreza harness is from a 01 RS. The GL is 87 and was fuel injected. I noticed the fuel pump wires are just hot and ground, so that is cake. But the rest goes to the tank sending unit and smog stuff. At this point I dont have any of the 01 smog stuff so I just want to figure out the fuel guage.
-
Yes I am using the Impreza cluster. From the get go the plan has been to run the entire Impreza harness to limit the crazy splices that I probably wouldn't be able to figure out. Honestly the only thing I have to figure out is the GL fuel tank wiring to work on Impreza cluster fuel guage. Other than that its just cutting items like headlights and taillights and splicing onto the GL lights. That will be the extent of my ability as far as wiring goes.

I wish I was making progress. So frustrated right now. I now have a spot in the shop for the car but waiting on a customer to move his first. Sounds easy but the car has no suspension and I dont want to move it for him. I gave him a month and now its time for it to GO! In other news, hoping to finally have a new windshield install here soon.

Its a 1971 Toyota Corona MKII wagon. Another project.....sometime. I've had it for a few years and it just sits right now.

No big plans for the L, just daily driver duties. But it will be getting a skidplate (every Subaru should have one). Haven't touched the GL in awhile. But I did get a few goodies that I will be using when shes all done. A little camp setup Nice little table 4'x2', fold to 2'x2' and locks shut

Yep, had it happen to me on the trail. My fender kept the entire strut assembly from going out any further. Hi-Lift jack got it back in place and tie down to keep it from separating again. Limped off the trail. There are a couple of things that cause this. One is removal of the front sway bar which allows the suspension to act more independently and the other is worn or wearing strut dampers. There is not enough rebound valving left to control the energy of the spring, so when you lift a wheel the springs energy pushes down the suspension faster than it should and over time this wears on the top mount rubber. This coupled with removal of the front sway bar make the wear of the rubber happen faster. Easy fix is limit straps. These will take the load of the suspension instead of the rubber top mount. There are a ton of people running "lift" springs these days with stock struts on Imprezas and this problem is occuring more and more.

Well it seems like you got a bit further with ARB than I did. I have been in contact with them for months awaiting this locker to come to the US and finally the say well were not sure if it fits that rear diff. I do have a r-180 sitting around I could tear apart. What exactly do they need measured?

Thanks for the kind words! I love this project. Cant wait to take it everywhere and definetly Moab one day. There is still a ton of work to do and now the wife is back in school and using the wrx wagon I had to get another Subaru for daily tasks. So I managed to procure a 1995 Impreza 4dr 1.8 AWD with only 92,000 miles! It needs a little lovin but will be a good commuter.

Only info I have that may not even help is I took the fuel dampers off our rally car when building it. I made new fuel lines for it and removed the dampers 100% Car is a 05 STI. There were no ill effects. Thats all I know.

2.5 litres of fury Brought the front down a touch with the added weight. I think it finally sits level which is perfect This is where I had the wiring coming through until I took a better look at the a/c stuff so I had to cut out a bit more for a/c line fitment. Now I will plate in and re-do harness holes.

Motor and trans are in
