Hello Bucky, I have followed your posts on the new car over the past year and noted your passion about it. This is the type of feedback I am looking for. My son got his license and was added to our policy this past weekend (ouch!). So if this one joins our home, it will be my better half's DD, since he is getting her car, an older Altima. Thanks, aba

Hey folks, Am going to see a black/gray 2008 OB Sport today. I have read many negative comments here on the styling of the new Impreza's, both 4 and 5 door versions, and especially the 2-tone Sport's. So I am not interested in your opinion on the styling etc. This might be an impulse buy for me if it goes through, more so since it is an auto; my preference is a stick shift. However, the deal is so enticing that it is worth a look. Plus I used to own a brand new 91 legacy wagon with auto that I loved, until an 18 wheeler totalled it in 1993 at Harrisburg, PA. However, the car has <500 miles and is semi loaded (aw mats, dimming mirror with compass, arm rest, sports grill, they are throwing in wheel locks - I will install; am working with them on splash guards). Like I said, not too much about the new non-WRX Impreza's here, but mostly serious negative thoughts. Any feedback on mechanical reliability, general build quality (creaks, rattles, interior fit and finish), actual mileage experience will be helpful - I know this is short notice, since I am looking at this in the evening. One more question, does the 6-disc cd unit have an auxilliary input for portable players. Thx, aba

My 1986 Subaru Leone GL Wagon!
aba4430 replied to Dodge Aries K's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
First of all welcome. Looks like a good wagon with some decent mods. With respect to the power hatch, check and see if there was an alarm system installed and with it a solenoid to actuate the rear hatch. I have done this on one of our 94 Nissan Altima's and the set up operates with the alarm remote (extended push of one button on the fob) or an inside switch. Of course, if this was done to your GL, then the owner should also have keyless entried the door locks. Would have been very easy, especially if the actuators are already installed. I installed an Excaliber alarm on our 1987 Brat in the mid 90's, including actuators in the doors and three relays to allow driver's priority unlocking (first push, the left unlocks, second push the right unlocks). System still works like a charm. It is quite easy to upgrade even manual door locks to power with keyless entry. -
Someone please tell me....adding gear oil
aba4430 replied to opus's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Lowes sells clear tubing in various sizes. All you need is a foot of the right size. Jam it on the spout end of the gear oil bottle, hold it so it does not slip off. The other end is in the differential fill hole. It is rigid enough that it will not pop out if you are careful. I use such a set up with success. Then you put the tubing in a plastic bag, label it for use again later. There will always be some mess to wipe off after you are done..... -
85 Brat Brake Problems
aba4430 replied to Twitch de la Brat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/raframecatalog.php?parttype=1704&a=RSSW1267769&carcode=1267769 Cannot go wrong with the RA parts mentioned above. See link. I just replaced my front set ups with the loaded rebuilt calipers. For <$50 each, was an excellent deal. Also see the following link for other parts (87 Brat, but should be the same): http://www.rockauto.com/RSS/vehiclefeeds.php?carcode=1267769&m=wc&l=en&html=true -

I think the new Legacy looks great and I have been a Subaru owner for 22 years. The power and torque upgrades to the engine appear impressive.... I think the torque is higher than the current WRX - perhaps the WRX will get the mod next year as well, plus the 6 speed manual. By the way, my only Subaru now is an 87 Brat.

The outfit is absoutely legit. Been ordering from them for 4 years now, with no issues. Please leave some parts for me , do not order everything.......

Regular KYB GR2's will be fine, or for a bit more have him try the KYB Gas-A-Just's. See related link... http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=90530&highlight=aba4430 $65 for rear shocks is absurd for the Brat. With installation, may be OK.

How much you guys think it worth?
aba4430 replied to vincentmoy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Vincent, if you want to keep driving it, replace your fuel filter...... Could be other issues, but try a new filter first.. -
The cheapest Bosch's are the Micro Edge's, and then they go on to the Excel and Icon's, I think. The Micro Edge refill's used to be available in the past, but I cannot find them anymore. So I just buy the wiper blades now. However, the Micro Edge's are excellent and @$7 - 8 for the 17" length. I use them on all our vehicles.

Ed, You have PM. aba -
You have not included year details, but the number sounds correct for the EA81. Here are some additional plug options including NGK, ND etc. for a 87 Brat. http://sparkplugs.com/results_app.asp?productTypeID=1&AAIA=1267769

Survey: EA81 Oil Filter Price
aba4430 replied to NV Zeno's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Check this out. These folks are very good. You do pay shipping, but if you buy bulk, it turns out OK. I mostly buy Nissan OEM filters for my 94 Altima's and the 87 Brat. The filters are the same. The Nissan's come from Japan. The Subaru, I am not sure, but should be. The Subaru link for the Brat filter is: http://www.worldpartsexpress.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getLocator&siteid=214078&chapter=ANL735&appSectionid=1&groupid=10020&subgroupid=20099&componentid=61140&make=32&model=Brat&year=1987&catalogid=1 The Nissan link is: http://www.worldpartsexpress.com/partlocator/index.cfm?action=getJointLocator&siteid=214078&chapter=§ionids=1,0&groupid=10020&subgroupid=20099&componentid=61140&make=25&model=Altima&year=1994&catalogid=1&displayCatalogid=0 The Nissan filter is ~$0.50 cheaper. I have used these on the Brat for many years now. -

Rock Auto closeout, EA81 cars
aba4430 replied to Frank B's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I replaced the left front drive shaft on my 87 Brat yesterday and realized that my front brakes were not worn too much. Rather than mess around immediately with a caliper rebuild kit, I ordered a pair of loaded B&A calipers from Rock Auto last night. Same part numbers at Advance are >$100 a piece, and no core charges. I also ordered a set of front and rear brake hoses. Thanks for sharing this info. -
I believe I'm in need of a new clutch....

Related to parts for my 87 Brat........ Went to Advance this afternoon and they ordered me a new 2-row radiator to replace my leaking one. I have lived with this for several months now. However, I have a few days off from work and want to stop having to top off my radiator every two to three days etc. plus not dump anymore into the environment. However, the leak is from the bottom right (passenger side) corner, where the metal is crimped. No issues, they ordered a new one - I paid for it and will pick it up. Then when I return my damaged one, they will refund my money. However, they said that the replacement radiator is warranted for 3 months only and no more replacements are permitted. I also have one worn drive shaft that I had replaced under warranty in 2005. In fact both were replaced in 2005. The original driveshafts were purchased from Advance in 1996. I have my original (luckily non-thermal) receipt also. The manager was adamant that no further replacements would be made free of charge since one replacement was already done. I showed her the original (1996) paperwork that says no such thing. It states that for as long as I am the original owner, they will replace the part if defective. They do have exclusions for commercial usage and the warranty is limited to 90 days on the replaced item. However, she would not listen. I asked her to provide me a written policy on their limited lifetime warranty. She gave me two sheets of paper, but they are general warranty statements, and no specific information on their "Limited Lifetime Warranty" is mentioned. I called another store to discuss this. The manager did tell me that they will replace a part once under this policy and warrant the replacement for an additional 90 days. Then I said that the policy had changed perhaps over the years and my original statement states nothing to this effect. He agreed that the policy had changed in the last few years, but if I had my original receipt, they would honor the Lifetime Warranty. He ordered a driveshaft for me also. Another thing I learned at the original store where I ordered the replacement radiator, is that after three years (I thought 5) they purge their system of receipts. Am not sure this is true, but just want to stress the value of keeping your lifetime receipts. It has come handy on more than one occassion for me. On their web site, there is not too much information I can find regarding their "Limited Lifetime Warranty". Anyone here who can shed more light on this? Thanks, aba

Lost my AWD??
aba4430 replied to 952.2LX's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Why do you suspect the transaxle? What year, model? There was a fuse in the engine compartment in the 1991 legacy we once owned. It was to be removed prior to towing - basically disabled the AWD mode.
