Anybody ever gut their Legacy cat? (off-road only)
powderhound replied to coloradosubarules's topic in Off Road
And the urge to move to a state with no emissions testing...Yeah Wisconsin...I love my buddy's straight piped Gti. -
There is a graphic on top of the dipstick that must be facing the correct direction. Read the owners manual I cant remember...I think the side with the little oil drip is supposed to point to the right. Also make sure you're checking the oil at consistent situations...ie always check it cold in the morning or always check it at a gas up. It is true about two sides giving different readings...I always go with the lower side. It is true that subies burn little oil but they leak.

What kind of car are you driving? Our 01 OBW has had three FIs replaced! First at 35K #1 and #3 went out. they were replaced under warranty at White Bear Acura Subaru. At 65K #3 went out again! We've called SOA and they claim this is normal wear and tear. Somebody get me a gun. I told them if this is normal you can count on never selling me another automobile...ever. I asked for some goodwill and they've given me nothing but run around. I hate this car. Why is it the 92 and 98 have never so much as blinked...oh yeah pre GM and pre 2.5.

Ha! We laugh at this don't we Mtsmiths? I couldn't stand people driving 35 mph all the way down 191, forcing me to pass them down the few straits...hey if you can't see the lines it must be a passing zone. I always reasoned if I passed one of the two cops on 191 (both in ford exploders) there was no way they could catch me. Live in Montana...you'll learn to do 60 in the snow...and if it's a straight shot 100 isn't out of the question.

Mtsmiths- If you're going 65 on snowpacked roads and begin to slide do you want to HOPE your automatic will shift or put in 4th and KNOW you will have the torque to bring the tail around? I guess it depends on how you deal with high speed slides...you can either apply the brakes or correct under power. BTW I've lived in Bozeman and Big Sky with an auto all-trac Camry and a manual Subaru...I'll take the manual any day. I've made the drive from bozeman to targhee more times than I can count in unplowed snow that constantly hits the fronts spoiler and flys onto the windshield...way more control with 5MT. As for your two inch comment--we have a little lake here called Superior that puts down 250 plus inches a year...basically in two months Jan and Feb. I happen to know for a fact that's more than Whitefish gets. Hell it rains until till you're half way up to Big Mountain.

They know your plan man. Maybe you should have Joe go alone and tell you about it. My buddy and I (both 27) got to test drive an STi even after he did a power slide into the parking lot with his 01 GT...god I love bald tires in the summer. We made the salesman sit in the back. BTW it's fast. Then we went and drove an EVO and an R32. For my 35g I'd take the R32...even if its a VW.

Ranger83There are a lot of "glass half full" types on this forum. That would be glass half empty. If the glass was half full having 3 injectors replaced, one done twice, in 60k really would be "normal" and having the rear subframe replaced because it might rust through was a great recall notice and having a subaru tech pour cement mix in my coolant has extended my warranty to 100k. Too bad my radiator wasn't covered but hey the glass is half full so I probably would've needed a new one someday. Did I mention the clutch judder...sweet...I love it! And now the heated seats come on when ever they want which really isn't that bad I guess cause winters coming soon. And piston slap combined with heat shields rattling beats any exhaust note I've ever heard. Wow you're right the glass is half full. This is a real quality automobile.

1. My parents 00 OBW is the worst subaru we've ever owned. The 2.5 is problematic and overall build quality is poor. 2. There's a reason all the cars on lots are automatics. If you're used to driving a manual you owe it to yourself to drive an awd car with a manual transmission. It simply is one of the great pleasures of winter. Tail out under power counter steering the whole way around a corner, steering with the gas, is not possible in an automatic. Subaru manuals last longer than autos and are cheaper to maintain and fix. 3. The volvo still runs. If you're looking for that type of reliability from Subaru you'll want a 90-94 legacy. Preferably a 91 or 92 ? But than you still must pass emissions. argh.

Thanks guys Larry, my old rims are the 14" steelies and I would probably save them and put snow tires on them. I've never had snow tires on an AWD car...seems like overkill but I bet it would be fun...or would it be harder to power slide? I need to power slide. I'm having serious snow withdrawl right now. PLEASE COMETH WINTER!
