That would be the problem with the phase 1 EJ25. Phase 2s suffer an external leak. BUT besides the HG problems these engines and cars have many more non typical subaru ailments. For instance our 01 OBW has had 3 fuel injectors replaced in 60K miles. The #2 injector has been replaced twice! SOA refuses to stand behind their own repairs and says this is normal wear and tear. If this is the new normal subaru might as well quit building cars as far as I'm concerned. When I called SOA looking for a goodwill warranty on the second #2 injector (it was just outside of warranty) they basically told me to get lost. When I told them it would be part of the class action law suit they got all huffy and indignent. We really need to sue these aholes.

Ditto on the 2.5...I grow less fond of our 01 Outback by the second. One other thing I have found is that 2.5 RS tend to be owned by the boy racer types who like to beat the snot out of their cars. Thus I would be leary of the transmission and clutch. Good luck...Oh and this car will last until you crash it into a farm implement.

I don't see Subaru bumping the outback to 300. More likely would be increasing the displacement on the H6 for something like 275HP. The H6 has alot of room to grow...I could see 300 NA horses out of that engine easy. What does Porsche get out of their NA H6s? The 2.5 at 300 HP is a balls out four banger...plus I wouldn't trust that thing to last too long. I'd take a tuned out 2.0 WRX engine over the 2.5 any day.

Don't do it! We have two 2.2s here (111K and 150K) and both run sweeter than our 01 OB w/ 65K. The 2.5 is simply the worst engine I've ever seen...sounds like a diesel in the morning and we've had 3 injectors replaced on it...#3 has been done twice. Even disregarding the enginge the rest of the car is pretty much a POS. If the previous owner didn't have the subframe recall done then this car is no safer than your 93. It would be cheaper to fix the 93 than do HG's.

Ok I did it! Wow was that easy. The magnet was covered with a silvery sludge and some larger pieces. I put Valvoline 80W90 in and plan on putting Redline NS in after another 5K or so. I drove it around and the dipstick is barely over the Low mark. I only put 3 quarts in and I assume the marks on the dipstick are one quart. So it appears I got it all out and need another .7 quarts. Is this possible or do I have to drive around more before I top it off?

Yeah, well it's not good...the crunching is the gears mashing into each other. I'm sure I'll have quite a bit of metal when I change the fluid. How much metal did you find? When did you change it? Did this problem develop after you changed the MTF? Some oils are too slippery for the synchros to operate properly.

To me Subaru means firing it up at 30 below and driving 5 hours through a snowstorm to ski some fresh snow turning 150,000 miles on the way without a second thought. When I lived in Montana I often drove from Bozeman to Whitefish and my legacy saved my arse more than once. The scariest was coming down out of the hills into Missula on I90 cresting a hill to find someone doing 40mph and when I switched lanes I found out why...sheer ice. We passed a semi fishtailing between a cement barrier and the big rig...any other car and all three of us would've been dead.

MorganM: Sounds cool I've never been over there but I know a while back I was looking for a headlight for my 89 Camry All-trac and they didn't have any imports...That was several years ago though. I'm in Hudson for the summer (or until I give up trying to find a job) so I'd be happy to go hit the junkyard. I'll watch the meet and greet. BTW we just fixed a misfire on the 92 and it had three champion plugs and some cheap(er) off-brand in the hard to get to spot (lazy previous owner?). One of the champions was arcing around the plug. Now it has two champions and two factory platinums from a 2001 Outback...runs great.
