  1. I'm in need of new tires and I see on ebay that I can get stock 16s from a WRX with tires for around 300. Will stock WRX wheels bolt right onto my 98 legacy wagon no problem?
  2. 92 Legacy 5MT 156K (Runs the best) 98 Legacy 5MT 112K (Runs great...drives better than the 92) 01 Outback 5MT 65K (sounds like a diesel...soon to become a RAV4)
  3. That would be the problem with the phase 1 EJ25. Phase 2s suffer an external leak. BUT besides the HG problems these engines and cars have many more non typical subaru ailments. For instance our 01 OBW has had 3 fuel injectors replaced in 60K miles. The #2 injector has been replaced twice! SOA refuses to stand behind their own repairs and says this is normal wear and tear. If this is the new normal subaru might as well quit building cars as far as I'm concerned. When I called SOA looking for a goodwill warranty on the second #2 injector (it was just outside of warranty) they basically told me to get lost. When I told them it would be part of the class action law suit they got all huffy and indignent. We really need to sue these aholes.
  4. I experienced this once on my 89 Camry All-trac. I had to put a jack between the wheel and the frame to get it off...never happened since though. It is scary though isn't it? I thought I would never get the wheel off.
  5. Ditto on the 2.5...I grow less fond of our 01 Outback by the second. One other thing I have found is that 2.5 RS tend to be owned by the boy racer types who like to beat the snot out of their cars. Thus I would be leary of the transmission and clutch. Good luck...Oh and this car will last until you crash it into a farm implement.
  6. We've had our subarus done at White Bear Acura Subaru and at Tires Plus. The only difference is the price. BTW Tires Plus is the only shop I trust around here as opposed to meineke or carx. Look for a coupon and get it done at Tires Plus for $39.99.
  7. Common oil leaks are from the front cam seals, crank seal, oil pump o-ring, and valve cover gaskets. I had all my front seals, oil pump, water pump, t-belt, t-stat replaced for around $900.
  8. Check the plugs. If the air filter had been that long since replacement I bet the plugs have been longer. My dad's 92 had a similar problem and it was simply the #2 spark plug.
  9. I'd start with the spark plugs. My dad's 92 had a misfire and it was simply the #2 spark plug.
  10. Hocrest is correct. That's the reason I can't accelerate with the defrost on. I'm not sure if the AC comes on when you have the defrost and feet button selected though. Just curious but did it take you 140K to notice this?
  11. I don't see Subaru bumping the outback to 300. More likely would be increasing the displacement on the H6 for something like 275HP. The H6 has alot of room to grow...I could see 300 NA horses out of that engine easy. What does Porsche get out of their NA H6s? The 2.5 at 300 HP is a balls out four banger...plus I wouldn't trust that thing to last too long. I'd take a tuned out 2.0 WRX engine over the 2.5 any day.
  12. Don't do it! We have two 2.2s here (111K and 150K) and both run sweeter than our 01 OB w/ 65K. The 2.5 is simply the worst engine I've ever seen...sounds like a diesel in the morning and we've had 3 injectors replaced on it...#3 has been done twice. Even disregarding the enginge the rest of the car is pretty much a POS. If the previous owner didn't have the subframe recall done then this car is no safer than your 93. It would be cheaper to fix the 93 than do HG's.
  13. Thanks Setright. Maybe I'll try to find some Castrol Syntorq just for you.
  14. I paid around 900 USD to have the timing belt, oil pump, water pump, t-stat, and all front seals replaced.
  15. Ok I did it! Wow was that easy. The magnet was covered with a silvery sludge and some larger pieces. I put Valvoline 80W90 in and plan on putting Redline NS in after another 5K or so. I drove it around and the dipstick is barely over the Low mark. I only put 3 quarts in and I assume the marks on the dipstick are one quart. So it appears I got it all out and need another .7 quarts. Is this possible or do I have to drive around more before I top it off?
  16. Should I perform this with the car on ramps or will that decrease the amount I get to drain out? Also I want to run the new oil for a short period to get all the metal out...how long is enough?
  17. Yeah, well it's not good...the crunching is the gears mashing into each other. I'm sure I'll have quite a bit of metal when I change the fluid. How much metal did you find? When did you change it? Did this problem develop after you changed the MTF? Some oils are too slippery for the synchros to operate properly.
  18. The only gear mine doesn't "crunch" going into is 5th. It's been this way for probably 40k now. You can double clutch to smooth it out. I'm going to change my MT oil, run 3k, and then put in some Redline and hope for the best.
  19. Are you serious? You forgot to check?! You'll probably need an Excursion for such a large item. jeeeez.
  20. I want to change my MTF and would first like to gather any pearls of wisdom from the board. I don't want to start a debate on which MTF to use...that horse has been beat...just any advice/tips/tricks for performing the procedure correctly. TIA.
  21. Lance might not know anything about AWD but he is the epitome of endurance--something Subaru (used) to be known for.
  22. To me Subaru means firing it up at 30 below and driving 5 hours through a snowstorm to ski some fresh snow turning 150,000 miles on the way without a second thought. When I lived in Montana I often drove from Bozeman to Whitefish and my legacy saved my arse more than once. The scariest was coming down out of the hills into Missula on I90 cresting a hill to find someone doing 40mph and when I switched lanes I found out why...sheer ice. We passed a semi fishtailing between a cement barrier and the big rig...any other car and all three of us would've been dead.
  23. MorganM: Sounds cool I've never been over there but I know a while back I was looking for a headlight for my 89 Camry All-trac and they didn't have any imports...That was several years ago though. I'm in Hudson for the summer (or until I give up trying to find a job) so I'd be happy to go hit the junkyard. I'll watch the meet and greet. BTW we just fixed a misfire on the 92 and it had three champion plugs and some cheap(er) off-brand in the hard to get to spot (lazy previous owner?). One of the champions was arcing around the plug. Now it has two champions and two factory platinums from a 2001 Outback...runs great.
  24. Hey where'd you find it? I'm always looking around for first gen legacys. My dad is in Hudson and has a 92 w/ 155k...let me know if you ever want to tinker with it (ie swap parts to diagnose a problem). Good Luck.
