  1. GD called it. It was the EGR tube! Pipe was completely chopped. I repeated the previous hillbilly fix with 2 hose clamps and a 2” piece of hose for now. New OEM EGR tube inbound at Peninsula Subaru in a few days. Thank you both for your insight to a noob question! I owe you a beer the next time I’m in Milwaukie.
  2. Engine has 167k miles. Timing belt and head gasket replaced within 2k miles by seller. No CEL currently lit. A code reader is a great idea tho. I just ordered a BlueDriver scan tool that will be here Friday. I will report back with what I find. EGR tube sounds like a good place to start. Maybe I should soak it in carb cleaner? I was considering giving her the ol’ Sea Foam treatment.
  3. Looking for troubleshooting assistance with my 04 Subaru Outback 4cyl MT. It has a very noisy intake and anemic performance under 3k RPM. I mistook the noisy intake for an exhaust leak so I replaced the exhaust manifold gasket but the problem persists. I’m new to car maintenance, with a background in computer hardware support. Any help would be appreciated. I’m not sure what’s causing this. Could this a valve/vacuum/timing issue?
  4. Torpedo and I arrived safely in LA last night. I had a few problems with my front driver side wheel wobbling (not loose lug nuts) that I'll post about later but other than that she ran like a champ. Thanks for your offers to assist! I hope to meet some of the LA Soob fans soon. -Clint
  5. They come without all the nifty options but Subarus are like legos, man! You can swap parts real easy between models. I already upgraded the rear brakes to disc that I yanked from a turbo. Hopefully in California I can find a rust free GL10. :-p
  6. I am driving my 92 Subaru Loyale from Milwaukee, WI to Los Angeles, CA over a period of three days (June 13-15). Day 1 : Milwaukee, WI to Neodesha, KS ~ 11 Hours Day 2 : Neodesha, KS to Albuquerque, NM ~ 11 Hours Day 3 : Albuquerque, NM to Los Angles, CA ~ 11 Hours I wanted to see if any of you would be willing to help me out in the event that I encounter any catastrophic car failures. This is a one way trip and I can't turn back. I have done a lot of work to her in preparation for the trip and I doubt that anything will go wrong. BUT if anything does I'd much rather pay a friend on the forum for a few used parts and share a 6 pack while wrenching in their backyard than pay some GM mechanic to do a shoddy job. I have AAA Plus so I can get a few 100 mile tows from where I break down to your shop. Here is the route I'd be taking. Not exactally Route 66 but pretty damn close. Also any suggestions of worthwhile tourist traps along the route would be much appreciated.
  7. very cool! This gives me hope that my Ruby Sue will pass smog too!
  8. I'm glad I asked for the advice of the USMB hive mind! I didn't know the cops would give me crap for my out of state plates. Best not be ridin' dirty then! This is my first foray into motor car self reliance. I drove little Ford coupes growing up but they were too complex for me at the time to figure out myself and fix. I've been into fixing up old mopeds for 4 years and now that I'm quite competent with those I figure a fixing up a Subaru moped hauler is the next logical step. So getting this thing to pass emissions seems like a big job but I'm up to the challenge. rat fink: Even if I register it in Reno wouldn't I still get hassled by the Police?
  9. haha yeah I figured you heard me robbin ya this morning. I got the tires on my those rims so I'll drop off your rims tomorrow.

  10. Well I know it's missing the O2 sensor which could cause problems. The reason I was asking is the exhaust just crapped out on my last night and I was toying around with the idea of running glass packs and a straight pipe... assuming I could somehow avoid any imperial entanglements by rocking my WI registration.
  11. 1st time poster & Subaru newbie I recently just purchased my first Subaru, 92 Loyale 4WD 5-Speed, from Miles Fox here in Milwaukee. This is the first car I've owned that I have actually enjoyed to drive and work on. I love it! Brilliant engineering and easy to service just like the 70's Puch mopeds I'm so familiar with. I am planning on moving from Milwaukee to Los Angeles soon and I highly doubt my Loyale will pass California's strict emission testing. I have my car registered at my parent's address in Wisconsin and plan on doing so for as long as I can. My question: Do you think I can drive this Loyale in LA for a few years with my Wisconsin registration without having to worry about passing SMOG or getting CA plates?
