  1. My Impreza is about 5 years old with 110k and the only thing that has gone wrong with it that may have been covered by a warranty is a broken door lock that I fixed for under $20. I've had brakes and a timing belt and such but they wouldn't have been covered. I haven't had anywhere close to $880 in unexpected repairs in under 80k miles on any Subaru (or Nissan) I or any member of my family have owned. Put the same amount of money away somewhere, maybe you’ll have to use it, but chances are in a few years you’ll have even more money to do whatever you want with. Take good care of your new Subaru and it will last you a good long time.
  2. The Dipstick probably says Dextron II but II more or less no longer exists. Dextron III will do the same thing it’s just an improved version. So your favorite brand of Dextron III will do your car just fine.
  3. On my Impreza there was a little white box just above the drivers left knee under the dash board. It could be umpluged and it didn't affect anything else. What I did is i let the bell go on and went under the dash until i found it and then unpluged it.
  4. Nice clean looking install, and simple too. You could also splice the power adapter into a switched 12v wire, like the one for the ligher. Thats what I did with my Sirius install and someday I've got to figure out something better for the iPod then the FM transmitter. I'll post pics of the sirius someday.
  5. If they are like the Impreza's the whole door pannel has to come off....not to hard though....
  6. I belive 2001 was the last year for the 2.2 in the impreza. I have a 2001 OBS with 107,000 miles on it, the only non schdualed maitnence things i've done are an O2 sensor and a door handle that broke. I have a 5 speed and run synthic fluids in the dif, tranny, and motor. I get about 25 mpg on avrage, highway i get around 30, I've goten 32 once. I've been very happy with mine easy enough to work on once you get use to the sparkplug changes. I just wish it had as much room in the back as my old GL wagon had.
  7. 5 speed or Auto trany? Does the light come on on the CC button but it won't engage? If its a 5 speed and the light comes on, follow your clutch peddle all the way up. You'll see a little tab that is suposed to press in a button, but there is a hole in this mettle tab. There was suposed to be something on it covering this hole but it probably feel off. Get a penny and some duct tape and tape it on there and you'll be good to go. $.01 repair can't beat that. If its an Auto or the light doesn't come on, check all your fuses and relays and connections.
  8. I can't remember if the 2000 forester is the same as the 01 impreza or not. Anyway I've got Sirius in my 01 Impreza, I live in DC so there is quite a bit of interference but the antena for the radio is right above the driverside window, I usualy jsut reach out and lower it. Every so often i listen to the radio for baseball games and I just have to reach out and put it back up. I'll post a pic of how I have mine set up tonight if you like but its pretty easy to get a good professional looking instal in these cars.
  9. I've had grinding on the 2-3 shift since about 70k on my Impreza outback. It hasn't gotten any worse, at one point I switched to redline 75w90NS and it got somewhat better. I'm at 110k now and it shifts about the same as it it did at 70k. As long as I'm not driving like a crazy person I don't even get a grind. It really only grinds when I shift above 3500rpm. It sounds like an ok deal, just keep in mind that the head gaskets could go and the trany isn't at the height of its life and keep a little money around for them.
  10. 1. The rear differential drain & fill plugs need a square tool of about 14mm. Where can I buy such a tool? I usualy just use a half inch drive ratchet or Impact wrench for taking it off. It will probably be pretty hard to get off if its been on there for a while. I belive the recomended intervel is 60,000 miles. 2. For the front diff (I have auto trans), I found the dipstick, but is there a drain plug? Or does it never need to be drained? Not sure what care you have, but there is a drain plug. In some its off to the side of the dif. On some of the newer ones I've heard they use a torx bolt though I haven't seen those myself.
  11. Its a lot eaesier the 2ed time, first time took me about an hour. Now I can do it in 20 mins. Really not bad compared to a lot of newer cars, first time with a Dodge Caravan took me alsmot 2 hours.
  12. If it worrys use a turkey baster and take soem out...just make sure to buy a new turkey baster....
  13. #5? That looks like its just the catch to me. If all you need is the catch get some Velcro to hold it down.
  14. umm...how do you open it? I downloaded a RAR decoded but still can't seem to figure it out. Thanks!
  15. Yup, take the old ones in. I had issues with rotors for my 01 Impreza OBS, its got 15" wheels they had to order those rotors and when I got them home and tried to put them on they were too big, ended up the ones listed for 14" wheels were correct. and yes i do know these are the original stock wheels.
  16. I would think they would fit, but I've always heard narower tires are better for the winter. But if you've got a good deal on these go for it and if they don't work out sell them.
  17. I had an 02 Outback need brakes and rotors on all 4 wheels at almost the exact same milage. Take it to the dealer this will be covered under warenty, they will try to get out of it but ask to see a copy of the warenty if they do and show them that subarus warenty covers wear items for 36,000 miles or 36 months which ever comes frist.
  18. Did you play with the filter just before the problem started of after, if before the problem started there are 2 maybe 3 hoses that run into the plastic air filter housing that if disconnected can cause a problem similar to the one you are having....
  19. Is this something that really should be done? My 2.2l has this in the schdual at 105,000 miles which is the same as the milage for the timing belt. Just wondering if i should have it done then or if i should just wait untill the valve covers start to leak.
  20. This happens because you are probably running your defroster on cold, when the defroster is on the AC is also running no matter the tempeture and you are blowing very cold air right at the glass. What you are seeing is the condensation forming just like on a cold glass on a humid day. A few things can be done, usualy just using the front vents and not making the cabin frezing cold takes care of things, if you must use the defroster set the tempature somewhere in the middle, it doesn't have to be hot but it can't be a lot colder then the outside air. I've noticed riding in friends cars on raining humid nights they often do this, and can't figure out why what you are describing is happening.
  21. That actually doesn't sound too bad for work at a subaru dealer. I know dealers around me are very expensive. An independent garage would probably be somewhat less, maybe 25% less. If you have done work on cars before those are both easy straightfoward jobs that you could do for a lot less. There are a few places online for subaru parts. 1stsubaruparts.com is one that is often recomended on this site.
  22. They just redesigned them for 2006, I don't think they would spend that much money on a redesign and only sell them for one more year.
  23. Thought I would add my self to the list of people that fixed their cruise control by tapeing a penny to the tab on the clutch pedle thats suposed to press down the button when the clutch in realesed. 10 mins of searching...10 mins of tapeing a penny and now my cruse control is fixed for $.01.....just one more reason why I love this board...thanks guys...
  24. I tow a 700lb boat no problem, every so often I tow an 1800Lb boat it gets going alright but you really feel it pushing when you go to stop, I wouldn't feel comfortable going onto highways with that behind it. This is an Impreza OBS 2.2 5 speed.
