My 01 Impreza OBS 87k has the exact same thing you are talking about, high pitched sound when accelarating hard over 3000 RPM. I can cruse at 3,500 no problem, but floor it and the sound is there. I haven't been able to figure it out but I have figured its part of the clutch and i figure with the ammount I drive and the places I drive I'll probably be putting a new clutch in within the next year.

Not a fan of white walls on most cars, but I really like the raised wite lettering, last time i got tires on my OBS I couldn't find anyone who made them in that size. I think it makes the cars look more rugged or something...I'm not sure but I don't like the way the new Outbacks and Foresters dont have them...

Every time my alternator has gone on a subaru thats exactly what happened for the 2 days or so before hand. Its the voltage regilator(sp?) going out which is internal to the alternator. So I'd say you are on borrowed time with it, find your self a new one soon.

When you do run it very low how much gas do you put in it? The tank capacity should be in the owners manual somewhere, see how low you are really getting, if you find there are more then 3 or so gallons left in the tank I would say your not getting it low enough. When the light comes on on my OBS and I fill up soon afterwards i usualy put a 13.5 gallons in my 15.9 gallon tank so I'm down to 2.5 gallons.

Just under the engine right up front. Its pointing straight down so its pretty easy, if you want you can punch a hole in it to drain the oil out befor unscrewing it, makes it a little eaesier. Anyway oilchanges tend to be pretty easy on these cars, I often don't even bother jacking it up. Good luck and enjoy your new car.

I run these on an Outback Sport and an Altima, they have amazing traction. The Altima feels amazing in the snow with these things as does the OBS. I can't really vouch for the tread life because I've only had them for about 20,000 miles on both cars. To most people these would be my first tire to recomend, but Barry said the noise was his concern and on both of the cars I run these on they are very loud tires, i guess that is often a trade off for the traction.

Like many others on the board I like to think of it as automatic undercarige rust proofing. Now if my car were a 98 i might think about fixing it, Subarus leak oil just seems to be the way it is, you could probably have another shop do just as good a job for $1000 but wait till you need a timing belt and labor is almost free. Untill then, NO RUST!

Yes the car was warmed up, I drove it around a bit and then let it idle when i was in line behind 2 cars. I had some trouble finding the write but by Edrach, though i did find some stuff about adding Heet to 1/4 tank of gas, looked intersting. The RPM did drop when I moved the EGR valve just didn't stall. I probably should do plugs, wires and an oil change anyway, but I've heard those really only effect the Hydro Carbons and the CO. Thanks!

My car is an 89 Wagon, F.I. EA-82 145,000 miles failed emission test on high NOx in VA, limit is a little under 1000 and my car had around 1500 at 15 and 25 mph. I'm thinking its probably the Cat but i'm really not sure I can spend that much money on this car as its not my daily driver. I've heard the EGR can have something to do with the NOx but i'm not sure how to check this, the lines are all clear and when I move the throtle I can feel the EGR valve moving. On most other cars I've worked on when I push the EGR valve in all the way at idle the car will stall, this isn't happing, would this indicate a leaking valve? Thinking i'll probably try on a junkyard one tomorrow if I can find one but any ideas would be much appriciated.

where are there good trails? I'm in Northern VA and would like to know of some good trails within an hour or so. I've found a couple but not much of anything good.

Just got it done this week at the dealer and it was only $8 and works perfectly. -
My 86 Brat with 66K original miles

Nice Fleet! The Legacy looks really nice for its age, I like the hood scoop thing you got there, what is that? it do anything? Like the Impreza in the snow pic's too. -
Normaly i'd say the 5 speed, no torque converter and trany to over heat, and you can engine brake a little more to save on your brakes. On the other hand 231,000 miles is a lot, it could go another 100k or it could quit tomorrow. I don't think a trailer with some lumber and stuff every so often will put too more wear on the car. Which one is in better condition??? i've seen cars with 50k on their clocks that i wouldn't trade for mine with well over 100k. Alright, here is what i would do, put it on the 5 speed, if you are having someone else do it watch them. Then if anything goes wrong with that just switch it over to the Auto and put a big tranney cooler on it.

Sounds like he's talking about an AT, I haven't worked too much with the automatics but I wouldn't worry to much about the brand fluid as long as its quality. I've heard good feed back about Mobil 1 ATF but haven't tried it myslef. Also just from what I've heard about the filter, definitly go to the dealer for the spin on filter which yours is(looks like an oil filter but people who have opened it say its not on the inside), the 4EAT's before '99 did not have the spin on filter so you don't have to worry as much about who is from.

I work at Home Depot and people come in with broken keys every day, usualy we can either clamp it together or with the automated mechiene you just puch the broken part in with the handle portion of the key. Point is if you go to any place that cuts keys they deal with this once or twice a week so its no big deal.

Timing Belt
Smpol19 replied to bertmars's topic in 1990 to Present Legacy, Impreza, Outback, Forester, Baja, WRX&WrxSTI, SVX
Sounds like a good deal to me...a couple of years ago i paid $400ish for just the timing belt on a EA-82 and probably about $400 for both CV joints near the same time...
