Saw my first Subaru B9 Tribeca today!
Vanislru replied to Tin Soldier's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I almost cried when I heard that the grill will be carried over to the other cars too. The pictures of the Imp in the new gen forum are distressing to say the least, but hey maybe I can swing a good deal on an 2004 model! -
Lower gears, using stock drive & 31" tires ?
Vanislru replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Off Road
The pinion is machined as part of the driven shaft, the whole shaft has to be replaced. However it is just the shaft and all the gears etc press onto the new shaft. The FSM shows the full time 4wd driven shaft to be the same between dual and single range. However, for some exciting news...... This pic comes from the L series and the Lib FSM and is for the part time 4wd gearboxes in each case. The top is the L series, bottom is Lib. To me the shafts pictured are identical, need this to be confirmed in actuality though. Why is this exciting????? Well, the Lib part time box was a 4.11 diff. So, if you can get hold of a Lib part time R&P then theres a good chance it will go into an L box. If you could pair up 4.44 [which was also available for the lib's too] R+P into either a liberty trannie or a Leone then you'd be set. Lower gears overall. So... swap the R+P and the rear diff ratio too. -
thanks! I searched but couldn't confirm this.

Weak welds on turbo exhaust!!!
Vanislru replied to CHIM's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
How are the hangers and exhaust supports on the cars you've had these prob's, if you don't have a solid connection to the tranni then it puts alot of strain on the up pipe portion of your header. I've been through a couple of headers but it was mostly to do with bashing/dragging the exhaust on stock cars before I went for the lift. -
Lower gears, using stock drive & 31" tires ?
Vanislru replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Off Road
I'm going to come into some money soon and I'm thinking of either having Mudrat or somenone else maybe try to source a 4.44 set of gears, it'll probly mean a good sum of money up front cause the newer trannies are $$$ and sure it;ll eat up alot of hours but for me right now a lower overall geared dual range is worth about 2 tho. If we could start with a rx trannies low range gear ratio 1.126? up top and then have the 1.65 bottom that'd be bang on for 30" tires. -
I'm trying to stuff a pb 4wd 5pd trannie into a twagon I have. Can I run 2 wires from the connector coming from stick shift to the 2 vac. sol.'s under the hood. I've got 4wd light sorted out, I just need to figure out how to actuate the sol.'s

WOW, that's a nice setup you have there. I'd send a set of injectors your way for a cleaning, maybe help offset setup cost. Can the nissan brown tops be found in yards easily? ATB

I guess water doesn't atomize as well as gasoline cause those injectors look like they're squirting not spraying.

Lower gears, using stock drive & 31" tires ?

Try this link for trannie info, there's quite a few out there with 4.44... http://www.rallispec.com/Transmission%20chart.htm -
Wicked, good luck with the testing!

I'm going to get lower gearing one way or the other, I have money and have no issues dropping $$$$ to get what I want. I used to wheel an f350 powerstroke, cost is relative. If I blow a thou. buck on a trannie for my roo then I've only spent what it cost to put SS tires on my truck. If I factor in all the times I've had to pay some ponce $90 dollars an hr to work on the diesel then spending big money on one or two items for my roo isn't bad at all. These cars are so easy to work on they "pay" for these sort of things in the long run. Pay to Play, the harder you play the more you'll pay.

Lower gears, using stock drive & 31" tires ?
Vanislru replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Off Road
There's got to be a way to swap a few gears. If the main gear/ front diff's gear ratio is changed plus your rear diff then you're done [forgive my lack of terminology I'm completey wiped]. There is a post somewhere with a copy of all the gearing in all the trannies subes have Ill try to find it tomorrow and PM 4x4 mudrat to see if I can track down this guy in Aus. -
Lower gears, using stock drive & 31" tires ?
Vanislru replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Off Road
I can't remember what it worked out to but if you figure the difference between 1:3.9 and 1:4.44 ratio's you can then go to a tire site and match the 2 figures as percentages over stock for the right tire size. I think 4.1 workde out to 28.4 " tires so 4.44 probly around 29.6 or so, I think... -
Lower gears, using stock drive & 31" tires ?
Vanislru replied to Scott in Bellingham's topic in Off Road
Hey Scott I'm currently looking at the same thing, so far it sounds like a 4.11 or 4.44 gear set can be installed into a D/R trannie, with some case ginding. 4x4 Mudrat knows who the guy in Aus. is that has done this I think. I'm going to have Mudrat do up a trannie with the lower gearin and an lsd as soon as I work out the details. I desperately want lower gears I don't like the bog in 1st and crawling's more like jogging. -

There's a few pics in the user gallery, some large. -
I've used cheap axles from the JY and reman'd but not had the problems you guys have, toasted 1 set so far and that's with alot of hard wheeling and street driving. Are these 4" lift's too? How much strut unloading is there when you're hard on the gas? If you have crappy/tired struts then when ever you're on the gas hard the struts extend making your cv's work at extreme angles. This will kill them, especially with larger tires and/or power.

Direct Hits: Spark enhancer for subies
Vanislru replied to 4WDFrenzy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I looked at the link and it's all lies, 500 amps through a sparkplug? These guys are on drugs! Sparkplugs use high voltage and low current circuit's, 500 amps at 12v would cook your battery and you'd need sparkplug wires 500kcmil about 3 "s thick stranded. The "how it works" write up was full of holes too. NGK's, good wires, a high voltage coil, and a larger plug gap and you'll notice more power than there set up would ever put out. Better yet get rid of the disty all together. -

Have a good trip, if you get achance the Tall ships are in Victoria around the 20th very nice looking sailboats! -
I'm going to wait until tomorrow to pull the trannie and see what the damage is, I feel like I'm 6 and was just told there's no santa. I've learned that sometimes it's just better to leave things alone when your feeling pissy. Seems fitting that this car is Rianna's and not mine, I"ll spare cursing myself by saying something stupid "like mine would never cause this much headache" even if it is true. I just used the HIAB on the 5 ton to move a car around the yard, I can't wait to use it for pulling motors lol.

I air down to about 10-15 psi for snow ice and rocks, and to about 20-25 psi for regular offroading. At 10 psi I don't think my shocks/struts even really do much, all the suspension is in the tires.

HAha! I love the 29's but am still trying to piece together a lower geared trannie.
