  1. I have neither the tools nor the knowledge to repair the trans. its not that i cant find one, its just that i cant afford it. i can get probably 10 D/R trans for $350 each, but its much cheaper to buy a parts car.
  2. thats what i was thinking, I've looked at them both and the 87+ are pretty heavy duty, i figure with some 1"x1" square tubing inside as reinforcement it should hold up pretty good.
  3. Ea82 My brother wants/needs a winch on his 86 wagon, and i want his 85/86 short bumper. Ive been looking at the 87+ bumpers and i think with a little reinforcement, I could mount a 5klb winch on it like this one http://www.harborfreight.com/5000-lb-electric-atvutv-winch-with-automatic-load-holding-brake-68144.html it should fit. the power needs and wiring I have covered with some heavy wire, and a 140 amp alt. what do you guys think? we don't have the money to buy or build a bumper right now. but we could buy some scrap steel to weld/bolt on.
  4. I've always driven a manual, only 3 of the 39 cars I have had were autos, and I hated them. I always downshift, rev match, heel toe, even left foot braking, the whole 9, when I down shift I never slip the clutch so that's a moot point. on snow and ice downshifting is extremely helpful, as the car will slow without locking the wheels. as for engine wear, I have never seen anything to make me think its bad for the motor, and I routinely downshift from 5th to 3rd spiking the revs to 5k plus. the motor is still turning so its still moving oil therefore I don't see it as being an issue. all this is on an ea82t with 250k. I drive it like a rally car, and on the snow, nothing can keep up. I replaced the brakes when I first got it and they are still at 75% 15k miles later. I had to replace the clutch, but that's more to do with launching it in 4x4 and 4x4 low on pavement. and clutch blips at wot to get it to drift on the snow. plus it wasn't a strong clutch when I got it. If you dont downshift thats fine, everyone has their own style, but i do highly recommend at least practicing it for panic stops and bad road conditions
  5. If i get the 88 as a parts car depending what it needs to get running, I will determine what to do, if its easy to get running ,like a fuel pump or t belts, i'll use my brothers 86 wag as parts (aside from the f pump obviously) then take his D/R and put it in my gl-10. If the 88 needs more work to get running, like a motor swap,or sensors, I'll use my GL-10 as parts for the 88 and my brothers wagon. this is all speculation, I might just find a parts car with a D/R and then all of this is moot. There are litterally thousands of ea82 wags around here, i must have seen at least 15 on the road today. so theres a pretty good chance I'll find something. http://anchorage.craigslist.org/cto/3835481479.html heres the 88, ad says its a DL, but its obviously not. Its pretty rough looking but its actually not too bad. it will need quite a few parts, but the body isnt too bad, doesn't look like its ever been in an accident. When i talked to the guy about it last year he said the engine was replaced with a jdm engine not too long ago.
  6. I thought about spliting the case and fixing it, but i have abused the hell out of it, and it had 360k miles before it was even put into my car. so its close to 400k by now. its not worth it in my opinion.the syncros for 1st 2nd and 3rd are pretty much shot.
  7. Good question, I think its either the shift fork or the syncro for second disintegrated. i was driving it then all the sudden i pulled it out of 2nd and it would not go back into any gears. the shifter is locked solid. i check linkage and clutch and thats not it.
  8. my car would overheat on the highway, but not on normal driving, it turned out to be the thermostat. hth
  9. Thats part of the reason i posted, i could not find any info on the swap. Its actually a heat wave right now, it hit 80 yesterday was pretty amazing. I would still probably need an adapter, but press lab has one in his ej turbo swap and its holding up pretty well yeah, i spent many years riding bmx and my knee joints aren't in great shape, and after an 8 hour shift driving around town my left knee is killing me. If the 88 can be fixed without any extensive work we may use my brothers car as parts for it; swap the lift and tires and a couple other odds and ends. then take his D/R for my gl-10
  10. That's what I was afraid of, I was hoping there wouldn't be too much wiring.. so the swapping it is off the table. I don't like wiring if I did it I would swap the entire wiring harness and thats way too much work. So I'll probably use one of my cars as parts for it unless a better parts car appears. I hate to dismantle my gl-10 but I'd end up with a better car after anyways.
  11. So I need to replace my D/r trans in my 87 GL-10 turbo and I cannot find one in my price range. However there's an 88 turbo gl with full time 4wd 4eat well within my price range. what I want to know is how much wiring is there? I know I'll have to swap the pedal box, the cluster some mounts and maybe the ECU but how hard would it be? the parts car itself is actually in pretty good shape, so I'm considering fixing it with the parts from my car if the swap is too intensive. Why the 4eat? well i like fulltime 4wd, and delivering pizzas with a clutch is hell on my knee joints. Also i feel like a turbo 4eat would actually do pretty good offroad. I was actually offered this car for free last year, it has since changed hands and it will cost me the large sum of $100.. lol when i talked to the guy last year he said the motor was replaced with a jdm engine less than 20k ago(and it looks like that's true, under the hood the engine is very clean) there's also a 3rd option, if i can get the 88 parts car running without too much effort, I may use my brothers 86 wagon as parts for it and make it his car, and take his D/R for my car. he's been wanting a turbo to help turn the 29" mud terrains. so what do you think i should do?
  12. I'd say keep it, make a toy out of it, the turbo and 4eat would be a decent combo for offroading, lift it and put some tires on it. and a spare car is always a good thing But if I were to put a price, it would be $2500 without the oil leak. $1700 with it. But then again, cars are much cheaper here.
  13. I got a set of mudflaps you can buy, shipping+ a little for my time. and they are yours.
  14. I had the same issues, I have a video from when it was doing it, i started with the CTS,then the intake boot, then the MAF, and that fixed it. You'll want to ignore my talking as I was still trying to figure out what was wrong with it, this will mainly be to see if your car is doing the same thing. It was a real head scratcher, took me around a month to figure it out. this was when it was just starting to do it, it slowly got worse and worse till it would just barely drive. Mine was very sensitive to leaks, i actually had to seal my intake pipe with RTV http://youtu.be/FaK6B5RHknU http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/topic/125570-help-oh-subaru-gurus-in-dire-need-of-assistance/ and this is the thread from then.
  15. I've always wanted to see someone put locking hubs on the front of a subie. do I sense a welded front diff?....
  16. went and made a Heep look bad... couldn't resist. I'll try to get a pic or video of it in action but alas i was alone during this run.
  17. more progress on the beast, replaced a couple vacuum lines and set the timing. the timing was set at about 15 degrees, no wonder it was gutless and had ping under hard load. Set it to 8 degrees like is supposed to be and WOW what a difference, its like a different car. drove up a very steep snow bank, very short and very steep, the back bumper actually touched. drove up, came to a stop and it actually had enough power to keep climbing. Awesome.
  18. This should be rather awesome when its done. Do I sense speeding tickets?...yes I sense many
  19. Does it still have the compressor and tank in the drivers front fender? if so you can retro-fit it to be an on board air system. not good enough for air tools, but would air up tires
  20. So did some more work to this beast today, I went wheeling in this little area near my house, and with everything melting there is some serious mud. I managed to find the deepest hole..Needless to say I got stuck up to the rockers, luckily a friend randomly happened to show up with impeccable timing, and pulled me out. then while keeping some speed up to make it through the mud, one of the sleeves on the rear adjustable struts slipped and left the tire touching the fender. So then I went and bought the only 2 rear struts in town and replaced them, It doesn't sit as high as it used to but it rides a bit better. and it only took me 45 mins. Also If you don't have any new bumpstops to put in the struts, a couple old radius rod bushings work perfect. I wish I had gotten some pictures of the stuck but I didn't have a camera. soon after I got it fixed a guy's car broke down outside my house so I thought I would pay it forward and I towed him back to his house. All in all a pretty eventful day.
  21. Just thought I would include a little helpful information... The turbo 3AT front axles are 23 spline and turbo 5mt are 25 spline. So you shouldn't need to replace your front axles unless you get a turbo transmission. also don't forget to switch to fly wheel bolts, they are longer. I spy an accel coil... not sure if thats the correct one. some performance coils like that are bad for the ignition module.
  22. You sir, are going to GREATLY enjoy working on subaru's.. I've worked on audi's before and they are a nightmare. you are going to have to simplify your thinking a little bit but this should be a breeze. these cars are like legos. just find the parts you and and put them on.
