adding a skid plate is as easy as bolting it on. and its very worth it. theres 2 bolts on the core suport and 2 on the engine cradle.

Complete Cone Washer Failure
AKghandi replied to jj421's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
with a bad c/v its not a problem to run 4x4, but this is a stripped hub. if he drives on it too much the hub will wear away, eventually the rotor will eat the caliper bracket, pads and caliper.. it just recently stripped to the point of not driving so he can probably get away with a new hub, cone washer, flat washer, and maybe some new brake pads. -
Poor 1986 XT turbo (sad story)
AKghandi replied to Mr. Carb's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
revive it!! even if the interior is trash you could do a rally car theme, it would make it faster. -
i seem to remember the spring rate being different, but I am by no means a computer whiz so me and the search function don't get along lol. Ive got one used strut/spring from a sedan to replace the one thats leaking in my car but im worried that when i switch it in the car will sit crooked. even with the rear fender wells being rolled about and inch the rear tire still rubs. its annoying. im going to put it in later today and see, even if it does sit crooked atleast its easy to switch back. when i get some cash ill get some 2wd wagon rear struts and some 4x4 wagon springs.

front left and right are the same with rear drums, but with 4 wheel disc, like the gl-10 all 4 hubs are the same. so you should be golden. -
Complete Cone Washer Failure
AKghandi replied to jj421's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
i had a 92 loyal that did that exact thing. because there was no flat washer the cone washer became worn and loose if you keep driving on it the hub will completely wear away in a cone shape and the wheel will sit leaned inward. eventually the rotor will wear through the caliper bracket, pads, then the caliper it self. the people i got the car from drove 3 months that way in 4x4.. so you should be OK for a little while longer you may want to clean the wheel bearings and repack them. metal shavings are bad :-p the axle should be OK. the axles are a much harder metal, but you should clean the splines out. after i put the new hub, cone washer; and flat washer on it was golden. my$.02 -
So i thought I'd try seafoam on some more plastics, logically it should work perfect. seafom is pure petroleum, plastic is made from petroleum. I'm not sure how long it will last yet but it looks good! heres the pass side door handle before and after. It worked so well I thought I'd try it on bumpers and trim(they were a little dirty) Overall I'm very happy with the results, I"ll up date after i wash it to see how the shine holds up I didnt get the rear struts swapped, i got to looking at my parts car and one was leaking. but i did get my hill holder working and my brakes bled, i forgot what good brakes were like Thats all for today, it was 22degrees out today so I wasnt as productive as i would have liked. not like anyone reads this lol:-p

stick ANY older subaru key in it and wiggle while you turn it slightly.. never seen it not work..

4 Little Subbies sitting in the trees
AKghandi replied to old sub freak's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
that brat is epic!!!! and those wagons look really nice too... i didnt know they made an ea81 gl-10' learn something new every day. so whats the plan for them? revive them and send them to new homes? -
it only pings at low rpms from a stop, and only very slightly. i have checked and double checked the timing plugs wires cap rotor and coil.. it just does it i guess.. it doesnt do it at higher rpm so im not too worried about it. and i think tomorrow if i dont get sidetracked ill swap the front and rear struts and the front c/vs. mine is a turbo so it sits lower than the N/A cars. so im going to swap them with an 88 4x4 sedan i procured for parts. but i feel like theres a difference between wagon and sedan rear struts. anyone have that info? i also discoverd that seafoam works really well for bringing back dried plastics like door handles, not sure how long it will last but it looks good.
-
Seafoamed the car today. idles a little smoother and doesn't ping as much smoke show was a lot of fun nothing too crazy. there were a couple smoke rings but couldn't get a pic of the elusive buggers.. up coming plans: change rear struts and front c/vs that will happen tomorrow.

sounds awesome! i love finding subarus in the woods and making them come back to life. there are hundreds of subarus that drove to their final rusting place out in the woods here, if you watch any of the alaska shows on discovery you would see quite a few :-p as for the pictures go to imageshack upload them in the size for message boards then get the "direct link" copy that, then in the reply box click on the little mountain with a sun in the reply tools. if you hold your mouse over it it will say "insert image". paste the direct link into the box that pops up and hit ok. its that simple lol now get us them pictures!! -
Intermittent Violent Engine Shaking
AKghandi replied to JEBalles's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I too had a very voilent shaking at highway speeds turns out some one removed the flat washers on both front cvs..the axle nuts were tight luckily. Vibrated really hard shaking the whole dash and making the steering wheel dance..replaced the flat washers and got the wheels balanced. All good now. -
mmmmm snow.. i bet that was alot of fun!... we know you drifted it lol\ so theres snow in the pnw but it hasnt really snowed here in AK....weird..

Really? "RARE"??? (I have to post this here)
AKghandi replied to SmashedGlass's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
hahahaha i get whole cars that run, for less than that.. i just spent $170 on a set of 14" peugeots with brand new studded tires... he must be high.:-p -
You might be able to get a custom one peice. Would save some weight.

I do remeber seeing a thread where someone put chevy brakes on but my ipod and the search function dont get along.

Im wayyy ahead of you! i have 2 front cvs, timming belts, MAF, starter, random hoses, brake pads, wipers and alternator. Theres more i cant remember but you get the idea..i just didnt feel like using my spares that i have so carfully packed into various compartments so i went into the garage and found a piece of hose that worked perfect. Ive had my fair share of mechanical mishaps so i have learned to be over prepared. (i also have all my tools in my car, but this is a subaru fourm so its assumed) :-p

yeah im a big fan of oldies jim croce, don mclean, queen, heart, neil diamond,ACDC aerosmith pretty much anything that was made before i was born. i'm the oldest 19 year old you will ever meet. in other news i figured out and repaired the antifreeze leak, the small hose that goes from the intake manifold to the TB was split so i got a piece from the garage and put it in and all is well.

So this is a long and mystical story about a boy and his subaru. It all started almost exactly one year ago, i purchased an 87 subaru GL-10 ea82t with 240k miles a "rebuilt" engine and a 5 speed dual range. It was in decent shape but it needed work. The interior and body were pretty nice, and the engine ran smooth so i payed him $500 and drove it home. But when the guy i got it from put the dual range in he didn't switch the rear diff or the front c/v's so i needed to find a parts car.. which i did, the exact same parts car the P/O had used. so i set about switching everything from the rear diff to the c/vs, interior pieces locks and ignition. and i also got the original hatch from the gl-10 with a bad window. and a set of 86' egg hole alloys After that it went smoothly for about 4 hrs. then i noticed the very distinct symphony of bad wheel bearings. so i went about replacing the front passenger side, and when i was done.. still made noise. so i replaced the drivers side, and it went away. then i figured well why not do the rears? so i did. After that there was a complete tune up and some new suspension peices like ball joints and tie rods. and i also replaced the fart pipe with a stock muffler. whisper quiet.(hence the name.i was torn between quiet riot and white noise) I drove it like that all winter and put roughly 6k miles on it and it was a blast Then the intake pipe and maf acted up. leading to a loss of employment, so i sat on it for a while then i decided to sell it in april. And now 6 months and 1k miles later i got it back!!! and i made a profit lol Right before i sold it i got the original hatch and a good window put back on and wired up, EVERYTHING works. from the cruise to the trip computer heres the hatch it had on it when i got it But the guy i sold it to decided he didnt like it the way it was, so he mounted some 2003 wrx seats in the front, got rid of the carpet in the back, and threw away the rear headrests. and he took the amp and subwoofer out. So that brings us to the present, its got some new issues and a few minor problems but im looking forward to getting my baby back in shape. onto the pics!/ this is how she looked when i sold it. which is the same but cleaner lol and heres how she looks today, i scored some more pugs yesterday, for $170 with almost brand new studded tires. i also have these for after i get a lift and some N/A 4x4 wagon springs and struts. and now some recent developments, she has developed an antifreeze leak, Im about 90% sure its just a turbo line or heater core hose. if it were the head/gasket i dont think it would be pooled on the head or sprayed on the spare tire. at most it might be the intake manifold gasket. This has become a book so i'm going to stop here and update as i go. thoughts, comments, opinions, jokes, anecdotes?

Gen 3 hotwire spider ea82t bogging and missing
AKghandi replied to 87.5ea82txt's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
im not an expert on the mechanics of the fuel control system, but i do know with the maf right in front of the TB the ECM would be getting a more accurate reading. and when its there the maf wont be sucking in cold air making the ecm think the motor is getting cool air. so the a/f ratio would be better. and from my expirience when its really cold outside the maf gets over worked trying to keep the wire hot. when it was -40 here my maf went all kinds of crazy. heres a thread on it http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=64741 -
Thats a pretty good price, i cant wait to see what you do to this sleeprx  not to mention quattro san:headbang:

$450 is really steep for an ea82t. $200 would be the most I'd go for a good one. most of the GL turbo's i get cost half as much as he wants for just the engine. they are a very temper-mental motor. so keep an eye out, there is always deals popping up. especially the ea82ts. Random coincidence, i just got back from looking at an 89 gl turbo full time 4x4 wagon 203k miles/ But the rest of it was COMPLETELY trash and it was an auto. Honestly i have no where to put another engine right now so i had to pass. Heres the kicker though, he wanted to GIVE it to me. LOL new injectors should help a lot what did you end up paying for them?
-
if i were you id pull those heads off the 89 just to have. the gen 3 heads are stronger than the gen 1 or 2 heads i believe they went to gen 3 in 87.5? hell id pull the whole motor just to have..with the ea82t's you might as well have a second one as its just a matter of time.. i would almost bet money the guy you got it from found cracks between the exhaust and intake valves(not entirely fatal) and decided to cut and run. if i were working on a car that nice i would have done a perfect job on the reassembly and kept it for ever. which is why im suspicious.. but i could be completely wrong.:-p its sad to see a subaru improperly maintained, but if they were all properly maintained how would we get them so cheap? lol
