EA82T===>Why hate it?
AKghandi replied to hillbillyhans's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
most people dont like it because the heads are prone to cracking and blowing head gaskets. That plus the engine control system from the 80s they just arent popular for tuning However, properly maintained they are great in stock form. Mine has 246k on it and i still manage to show riced hondas how its done. silly hondas....they think they can drift lol i even showed up an sti once...he doesnt deserve that car. im going to sell mine here soon and buy my brothers 84hatchie. better mileage and i wouldnt feel so bad about denting it on the trail. -
Not exactly a "tech" question, but.......

wow nice wagon..you wouldnt happen to need a kidney or maybe half a liver? Id gladly trade you lol.:-p -
it really sounds exactly like what mine was doing when my intake pipe was cracked when you shift theres no BOV or recirc so the air goes back through the turbo and closes the maf pushing the pipe off Causing a cutout till the turbo sucks the pipe back down and opens the maf. Just a theory but its airtight It stumped me cause i sprayed all arond there and the idle didnt change till i pushed down on it and the idle went normal Dont you wish you had a spare ej20t layig around? Lol

You can flip the rear strut tops to lower the back by about an inch maybe more Look for lowering ea82s thers alot of info there. theres probably a write up about it. I think you flip them and switch sides so they line up. and your rear struts may have adjusting sleeves to raise/lower about an inch they came in 85-86 i think Have you been able to repeat the studder on purpose or is it completely random? Filter makes sense..less fuel then ecm reads lean then hits over boost cutout The only hole i canfind in that therory is it would be alot more frequent and boost cut in my car is more like a bucking it doesnt go dead for any amount of time i just let off the gas some and keep going(no it doesnt over boost anymore) What does it do under boost? Any pinging? but the maf still has my vote D.C subaru has one of those on the shelf for your car $75. i know be ause he tried to sell me it but mines the hot wire style. and once again nother random idea how bout the wiring harness it runs behind the fender that was replaced maybe somethongs grounding out?
-
Put some fiber board behind it then cover with bondo then screw the trim through to the fiber board.
-
You could mount it in the glovebox...
-
That car makes me drool everytime i see it.
-
My uncle told me about a trick if you put bondo on the smooth side of the sand paper then stick it on let it set then carfully peel the sand paper off it should leave a nice smooth surface.
-
I got a simple test to rule out the intake pipe When the cars runnIng lift up on the intake pipe to the turbo gently if its the issue the car will die. just more random ideas that pop into my head. Mine completly fell apart when i took it off and the new one i got was also cracked but not nearly as bad. its sealed with rtv epoxy and black tape now.
-
You have the vane style maf or"flapper" maf so theres nothin really to clean but you can take it apart and see if the contact strip has any spots that have been worn through Sounds like the intake pipe problem i had Maybe when you turn left the engine flexes and the pipe pops off the turbo enough to bypass the maf. when i had the leak there i had to press the gas to get it started. And now i dont. It also would studder like your but it never did it under boost. the overboost isnt controled by a boost sensor its controlled by the computer reading a lean condition Maybe a clgged fuel filter?/16 year old gas? its something simple that car was running better than mine. and you will be kicking your self for not figuring it out sooner lol Also be very carful with the cts conector its very brittle from 20+years of heating up and cooling right next to the turbo
-
The cts is right next to the egr solenoid you replaced its a 2 prong connecter on the cross pipe. Atleast thats where it was for mine not sure if yours is the same but it should be.Thats for the engine the one on the thermOstat is for the gauge and the one in the rad is for the fans Maf has my vote and i believe you can take the top off yours and check the contacts there might be a bald spot around mid throttle Sounds kinda like over boost but i know you dont drive that thing like i drive mine

coolant blow from exhaust...
AKghandi replied to Suba_GL_87's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Leak down test. That is all. that way you know if its the hgs or like nipper said intake manifold gasket which is harder to diagnose....nothing worse than replaceing a part thats not bad. Trust me :banana:Random banana cuz its easter. -
check out my new exhaust!
AKghandi replied to maozebong's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Lol i feel like i just got t-baged by your car. Nice exhaust. I need to do something like that on my car. Only with 2.5 pipes cuz of the turbo. every post needs bananas -
I just tested the connectors with a peice of wire to see what they lit up on he dash then i tested the connecters on the trans with a voltmeter to see which was which theres only 4 wires 2 for the4wd light 2 for the reverse light theres a few wires left Over for the low light and the neutral switch if it came from a carbed car.Just wire them together and go.
The 3.90 ratio is amazing with the turbo. I had so much fun this winter,it will drift like you wouldnt believe. and a 4lo launch will break your neck.
-
I drift my wag on anything but pavemnt. The ea82t with a 3.90 d/r 5spd works out really well on snOwy roads ive been know to throw the rump roast out doing 60 I love the chaotic peace you get when your going sideways at speed:headbang: This summer the rears getting welded and the front shafts are coming out Im curious if i will work if it doesnt then its gettin doughnuts on the backS
-
Sounds like a bad turbo to me. I had the same problem on a dodge daytona shelby. It would smoke like a SOB when i started it and when i gave it gas but not while i was decellerating. You can always do a leak down test to help determine the issue Check the turbo for signs of leaks, check the outlet for signs oil etc. It kinda sucks but its better than valve seals. And some brake fluid in the oil may help stop the smoking

Rear CV axle question
AKghandi replied to SmashedGlass's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sounds like somthing rubbing on the tire to me. But without actually looking at it this is just a guess.. ive found wheel bearings are more of a howling than a ticking untill they go really bad but you would know if that was the case But a striped hub may make that noise It doesnt sound like a major issue its just tracking down the noise and figuring it out Good luck. And a to cheer you up. -
Ea82 hatch glass replacement
AKghandi replied to AKghandi's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Bump spent 3 hrs yesterday trying to get my hatch out of the 2 feet of ice its stuck in no luck. So this is postponed till it gets even warmer. That is unless someone here knows a handy trick to get things out of ice. In retrospect putting the hatch there was not a good idea. -
So it's finnaly getting above freezing so I thought I'd fix the ugly dented rusted hatch I have by putting the original hatch back on And as you might guess the window is spiderwebed So my question is how hard would it be to swap it from the ugly to the not ugly? How does the trim come off? What kinda tools would I need? I don't have the money to pay a shop so I'm doing this on my own They are bOth 87s so there shouldn't be any differences unless I'm wrong And some bananas for your enjoyment

Look what followed me home
AKghandi replied to tundrabrat's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
wow that fender came out great! i think who ever ordered that car when it was new ordered it that way although its kinda weird how it doesnt have the checkerd door cards.. the 4wd shifter is custom too.. i think that was added for better 4low-4hi shifts. ive ridden in this thing and it feels like a brand new car. its amazing. oh i forgot this.:banana: i love bananas lol -
Ea82 loyale thumping and klunking going out of 4wd
AKghandi replied to Prwa101's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Sounds like a rear diff bushing. Mine clunks when I hit the gas and occasionally when I disengage 4wd they always bind a little when your in 4wd and turning Tire size and pressure is pretty important they all need to be the same size and pressure or things will bind even more. -
I think tundra brat has it covered he's got the same resources I do lol Just to clarify I don't have a bunch of parts but about an hr from here's theres a whole yard with all kinds of subarus 85-2011.

That so sad seeing such a nice sedan in the junkyard..

What about 4wd xt rear struts? Are they shorter?.. I didnt see them mentioned in any posts.. I may lower my wag this summer for ice racing next winter. Just to make clear 2wdxt fronts and 4wd rears with eBay coilovers?
