78 Subaru Wagon Interior Beginnings
Dan-AZ replied to Sub78's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
I've done my heater core. It's work on those 70's wagons. The whole dash has to come out. It was a 2 day job for me on my 79. Good looking car. I think my car found its sister! -
I have had an interesting problem with my 79 GL wagon and I am not sure what caused the issue. I recently had my fuel pump go out on me. The pump would work great when it was cool; however when it would operate for a period of 5 to 7 minutes it would heat up and then stop and the car would quit. I have replaced the pump and all is good. This pump was less than 6 months old. When starting this car after sitting for a period of greater than 1 day, it takes time for the engine to get fuel and then run. I have to crank it for 5 to 10 seconds until the fuel pump gets enough fuel into the carb. 1. Would this be considered normal? 2. Would this cause problems for my fuel pump? Shorten its life? 3. Shouldn't there be enough fuel in the fuel line to fill the carb to get the car running after a few seconds instead of 5 to 10 seconds? Once the car is running, there are no problems. I am just trying to see if this might be killing my fuel pump. Thanks...

I was talking with a Subaru Master mechanic who has a lot of experience with older 70's and 80's models. I am planning on doing a major engine overhaul I hope this summer. He states that regardless of the changing of the oil seals and gaskets, the engine will leak oil after 6 months or so. He states this is just the older EA71 engines and there is nothing you can do about it. Anyway. My EA71 leaks oil and I can't stop it.

I am hoping to do the same. I want a Brat so bad now so I can start rebuilding another car... What a find and good luck!

OK. I keep hearing many terms that I want to clarify so when I talk with people I will actually know what I am talking about. I keep hearing terms like Series 1, series 2, Gen 1 and Gen 2. Can someone please explain them. I've been told my Car [a 1979 GL 1600 Wagon] is the last of the series 2 of Gen 1? Is this correct? Thanks. Dan

Nope. I haven't been real active on the board for a while. I really never took pictures of what she looked like prior to all the work. I am a backyard mechanic with a ton of tools I inherited when my father-in-law passed away. She was pretty rough, but the family I bought her from kept her in a garage and didn't run her much. I picked her up with under 110,000 miles. She has some oil loss thru the valve guides but she is pretty sound. Tranny was worked on and the front end for the most part is new.

My carpet needs to be replaced and I am going to probably buy some bulk carpet and redo the whole floor. Has anyone out there purchased some good carpet and where did you get it? I found a bunch of places selling it for about $20 a yard with shipping.. Just want to see if anyone else has any experience with this on material and vendors.

Thanks. It's 12 years of work to get her to where she is now. My wife does not understand my obsession with my car. It's funny that you own a Brat because I am looking to purchase one and perform the same restore on it as I did my wagon. It's good we have the weather we have here in this state. Otherwise older cars would never be able to make the years some have on them. The snow is all melting, but if you hurry up here you still have great skiing at the Snow Bowl. 50 inch base or better. Cheers.

The alternator was spot on. Perfect match. I have some corrosion on the front fender wells where the 2 parts meet. It's not too bad, but I will need to have it ripped up by a body shop and fixed. It's on the top just forward of the center of the well. We don't use salt here in Arizona so that's a plus. Salt just eats away the metal. I try to keep my car as close to the original factory specs as I can. I like to keep the Hitachi parts going so I am looking at replacing the brushes and the electronics in the alternator. The $26 for the diodes and the $5 for the brushes should repair it. I'll have to take it in and have them spin it to see after that to check voltages. I guess I am a purest when it comes to my car.

Rock Auto online. The alternator is a Hitachi and it's about $50. A rewind will cost you a minimum of $80 if not more. I am looking at new brushes [$5] and a new voltage regulator [$26] to see if my old alternator will be reborn. The windings look good. We'll see what that gets me as a spare.

Alternator rebuild or use a Mod?
Dan-AZ replied to Dan-AZ's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Never ran into aluminum wiring. All copper here that I can tell. I did have replace my alternator and V/R and we are good. I found a Delco Remy rebuilt Hitachi alternator for $50 thru Rock Auto parts. Rebuilt but certified to work. Good luck. -
I guess I'd better clarify some stuff. The paint is not original. I had the body work done in 2006. The paint color is the original match to what she was in 1979. The interior is still all original. The tranny was redone in 2005. The front end and tie rods were replaced in 2008.

Nice car. Huge changes in body style and lights, dash, just about everything from my 79. It took me about 5 to 6 years to get mine into the shape it's in now. A lot of long days in the garage during the summer.

More pictures added. - Enjoy

OK. I own a Marty Brodeur goal stick that I use to play hockey here in Arizona. Yes, at almost 49 years old I still play and my glove hand is nowhere near the speed it was 25 years ago. Born and raised in Philly so I am a die hard fan from 1968 on. Since it's 13 degrees F outside, I will take pictures when it gets a bit warmer. I turned the odometer over to 147,000 miles last week on the engine. I'll get some interior pictures posted this afternoon and some pictures of the engine compartment too.

Oh, by the way. Devils suck! Go Flyers!

I have restored her and she is my baby. I think I will cry for a week when I have to get rid of her. If I ever do.
