the biggest issue is the long bolt that holds the 2 control bars to the hub. They can be siezed sometimes if you have airtools you might get lucky and zip them right out. Just remember the long bolt that goes through them is $33 each at the dealer and the nut on the end is $9 so be sure you don't mess them up. If you don't have a wrench for brake tubeing (it is a box wrench with a small piece missing...buy one they are cheap and will be your best friend forever. Get the hub assembly and brake lines the whole way to the chassis (through the strut mount and all) this is much better than pieceing it together. If you got questions while you are doing it or before hand feel free to call me and I can talk you through.

it took me 6 hrs but in all reality it would have been 5 but the cell phone kept ringing nonstop. I will say that on an impreza that air tools are your best friends. If you had the parts laying there and people didn't disturb you 3-4 hrs is a real possibility. When you put it all together....remember to anti sieze everything. If you ever have to go back to do wheelbearings you'll thank me!

very much so!!!!!! i did it to the impreza 2 weeks ago. Big difference!!!! drum brakes FTL

depending on the year of the 2.2 it is 130, 135, 137 and the only 2.2 to get close to 160 was the turbo 2.2 Sorry to disappoint you. BTW, the old 1.8 16v VW motor was rated at 128 if i remember correctly (even if i am wrong....it is a far cry from 160 also) yeah I used to play with VDubs too. :-\

95 impreza FTW!!!!!!!!!!! the funny part is: you talk about this bike on 2 different boards but you keep failing to mention the issue that stopped you dead in your tracks last time. Now I'm not going to be "that guy" but realistically deep down ---> but back on the subject here... Does anyone care for a cookout? Are we still doing a motor swap? Bueller, bueller -

make sure we have wrenches so that we can tighten up everything on the Harley that will rattle apart on long trip up. Keith: Are we still doing the motor swap on sat.? -

Written by grossgary: if you have any specific questions about this writeup please address them to Gary and he will be more than happy to help you. If you are an XT coupe owner you should also be a member of www.XT6.net there is a wealth of great info over there for xt coupes. here are some pictures showing how to extend the life of air struts. bought my car over 4 years ago at 105,000 miles. i have never replaced the struts, just keep them clean and i'm now at 220,000 miles on the same struts that were in there when i got the car. i'm going through this preventative maintenance again and they still appear to be in very good shape after at least 115,000 miles and 4 years. basically the first picture shows the strut as it was on the car (and another picture of a spare strut with similar rust). you can see the rust forms right where the air bag meets the bottom of the strut. here the air bag rolls back on itself and is held in place by a clamp/ring like mr. radon discovered when he disassembled one. when rust forms here it rubs against the air bag where the air bag rolls back on itself and against the metal. the rough rust will gradually wear through the air bag. on the other picture of my spare strut you can see the rust on the air bag where the bag travels up and down with the changing conditions of the strut. here's the strut adapter to fill the strut with a standard tire inflator. as you're working be sure to keep filling the strut as any leaking around or through this adapter will make the strut loose height and you will miss rust/dirt. best to make sure it holds air and doesn't leak otherwise primer and paint will get rubbed off as it deflates when you get to that stage. but if you can't keep the adapter from leaking, keep filling the strut as you work your way around to clean it at least. taking the strut or a matching threaded nut into a hardware store is the easiest way to make one of these adapters. a good hardware or auto store should be able to help you get these parts. i don't have any part numbers or sizes handy, these are old. here is the filed down and cleaned strut almost ready for primer and paint. i also take a thin flat bladed screw driver and carefully slide it flat to the metal but at an angle under the lip of the bag (sort of hard to describe, but simple enough). be careful when filing and putting tools close to the bag, it is very tough obviously since it supports the car, but no need to nick it up. slide the screwdriver under the lip of the bag and sort of tilt it up on the uppermost corner and scrape out the dirt/rust. work your way around and you'll be able to clean it all out under there. only takes a couple minutes. again make sure the strut is fully extended. might have better access if you give it more PSI than i did. i think i only went to 150 psi, not sure i didn't even check the compressor. not sure what these things can hold either. i think i went to 150 psi, but again i didn't actually check. file carefully and get it all cleaned up. clean it down and prepare it for a good primer/paint job. the second picture shows the final primered and painted strut. this seems to be a good way to keep those 250 dollar or more struts in good shape. i typically spray the struts down every now and again (rarely but couple times a year) to keep them clean and free from dirt and such collecting up under there.

90-94 legacy's: all had 4 wheel disc 95-99 legacy's: only the gooder ones have rear disc Impreza (gen1) all had disc/drum UNLESS the car had ABS. If you have an impreza with disc/drum and you want disc in the rear go to a PaP yard and get yourself a set. I just did this last week. Not too bad of a job if you have air tools... otherwise it isn't the funnest.

Very safe to let it there. Someone I'm sure will be sleeping overnight and I know John will be letting one of his there too. There is always someone up around there and the people at this show are all great folks. -
Perfect power 6 whats that???? is your car a 2.2 or a 1.8?

well I did my conversion tonight.... it was a long night let me tell ya. My biggest problem was the stupid brake hoses...they didn't want to come loose. Thank God for air tools too...without them I'd be screwed. how does it drive????? can't tell ya.....I didn't have anyone to help bleed the brakes and I don't have a hand pump so I drove it home about 9 miles with no brakes (don't worry it was midnight and I took all back roads and I only saw one car the whole trip). What I can tell you is that the hand brake works pretty good though. Hope to bleed the brakes tomorrow after the wife gets home and we will see how it works... FYI, those long bolts on the suspension cost me $33 each and the nut that goes on them..... $9.70 each....needless to say I didn't need them so they are going back in the morning (just trying to be prepared you know...)

I thought the same thing but I had a 20 min cell phone arguement with my independant subaru shop owner today. I thought the same as you....and I plan to go ahead with the job asap. Did you change the hubs too or do the parts (backing plate and all that stuff) just swap over? I haven't torn mine apart but they look very similar and if i don't have to pull the long bolt from hell out then it should be an easy and quick swap. Thanks for the info. Matt
-
proportionating valve?????? did you have to change it or do anything differently? or was this a straight swap of parts? I had a conversation with someone today and they said the brakes will drag if it is not changed... but I would rather hear it from someone who has done the swap.
-
quick question.....how did you get the long bolt out of the control arms and the small bolt at the bottem of the spindle (the one for the bar that goes forward)? I got rear discs for my impreza and I am having a heck of a time getting things apart. (i've been spraying WD-40 on it in 12 hr intervals for 3 days now) Advise please!!!!

I thought they were buying a baja to make a lift for (which would be the same as a gen 2 OB). hmmmm

here is what I did.... I callled them and of course there was no answer so i left a message asking if our group had made the 25 last year and if I was going to have to send them a deposit or not. Almost 1 week later (*sigh*) the chick calls my cell back and leaves me a message that says that we didn't meet the 25 last year and I would have to send the $150 in to them and if we make the 25 or more I will get my $150 back. She then go on to say that we have x amount already registered so far. I then went on to the internet and printed out the form to fill out for the club space (per her request) and fillled it out and faxed it immediatly. I registered my 2 cars that night on the internet and beleve it or not that damn card for the club space showed up 2 days before the other one. So here is what I have: 1 brownish card that shows 2 paid admissions (cars) and 1 brownish card that shows that I have registered for a club spot for us and I spent $150. According to her message this is all I have to do and we should be good to go. She never said anything about sending stuff back to her regarding registrations and so forth....they have it all in their computer from what I can tell. Scott: if you registered tell me how many and if beerheart did too then how many did he do so i can update the list. -

Welcome to the board and welcome to our little group of folks that are going to Carlisle. Your name has been added to the list above and thank you for participating. John is a hell of a great guy... you have a good friend there and a pretty knowledgable one at that.
