My 73' Coupe Restoration

No I haven't. I've got enough stuff to worry about before I need to sweat the small stuff! Mark -
1979 Brat DL "OH YOU COWL!"
Datsunrides replied to NEPASubaru's topic in Historic Subaru Forum: 50's thru 70's
Cowl rust is not pretty. Check my build thread and see what I mean, there are 3 layers of metal in there! Not sure the best method to do a temp repair as the rust won't stop and it will only be a matter of time before the patch fails. Best guess, fiberglass the area under the dash and have the cowl area cleaned and maybe spray in bedliner? For the most part it's not an area you can get a brush into. -

I could use a couple of the thin nuts that hold the original radio to the dash. Also would be interested in a nice original 4 speed shift knob. Also in need of a dome light lens. LMK if you got something -

Ummm, it's not a racecar, that's pretty obvious, hence the . Bottom line is that is how I wanted it. -

Yes I did. Drilled out the spot welds. There are 3 on each side under the headlights, 2 on each side at the bottom of the fenderwell and 1 on the center support. 11 total. Pretty easy to drill out. Mainly removed it so I could metal work the dents out as much as possible. After I painted the engine compartment area, I rosette welded it back on using quick bursts on the mig and immediately cooling with water to minimize the paint burning. Then I masked off the core support and finished off the bodywork and painted the valence. New pic Mark -

Because racecar. LOL Actually, I did it because I removed the battery tray to abate some rust before it ate through. Since it was removed and I planned to use a dry cell battery AND I did not replace the spare tire carrier after the cowl repairs it just looked like the perfect place for it. And racecar. Mark -

Dude!, that helps sooooo much. Right now I have the cables on top of the control arms(looked that way in the FSM). Looks like for the rear parcel shelf I will just custom make something. Not even going to waste time trying to find an original. Same for the kicks. -

To update, over the last couple weeks I managed to get the drivetrain dropped back in and hooked up. Today it roared back to life after sitting in the garage for 6 years. Amazingly after priming the carb, it stared on the 1st crank! Downside is the radiator started leaking (didn't leak before) and the carb still has some issues and the acc. pump probably dried up. Well, at least once I button up a few things on the front end and put the wheels on, it will be able to move under it's own power. Hope to get the front end stuff sorted and off the jackstands this weekend along with installing the doors and adjusting the fenders. -

Paul, any help is appreciated. To add to the requests, Parking brake cables: Do they go under the tie rods or over? I tried them both ways and both seem to have their issues. Quarter glass: I could use a pic of what holds the glass in on the forward side. I can see there are supposed to be some sort of rubber bushing fitted to the inside of the bracket but no idea what it looks like. The ones I have were siliconed in. Anyone have a line on a good radiator? It didn't leak 6 years ago, but now it does. I guess I could also recore it, but I can see where this has been reworked before so not sure if it will survive another. -

Whenever you get the chance Leeroy. Appreciate it. -
This thread will be for me to ask your help with reassembly of my 73' 1400 coupe. Since I tore it apart 6 years ago, stuff has either gotten forgotten, misplaced, lost, or was never there. Hopefully you guys/gals can help out where needed. With that said, I am looking for the following information to start, 1- Does anyone have a part number for molded upper and lower radiator hoses? The listings I find are all the flex type hoses. Do hoses from a newer model interchange? 2- Pictures of the rear parcel shelf. I believe this was a "cardboard" piece on the flat shelf and vinyl going up to the rear glass and attached with a rod to the 4 plastic clips there 3- Pictures of the kick panels and front wheel wells. What do they look like stock? I don't remember the car having this when I got it, only some horrendous carpet remnant. Mark

Some based off the info, I decided to order a DL gasket I found since I could find nothing for a GL. Well, as I suspected it does not fit. Actually, the width is spot on, but the height is about 1.75" too short. Looks like I will need to splice a section of the old gasket in. I guess a 90% new gasket is better than nothing. Mark -

Thanks for the compliments! Kind of tossed as to whether I will put up any more progress pics or just do a pic dump after JCCS. Maybe just a couple more teasers to keep you wanting more! LOL. The car is going back together pretty good. The slow going is mainly due to the Polaroids I took having faded, along with my memory. And the pics in the factory service manuals are not always clear. Since the last pic I posted I have reinstalled the rear suspension, front suspension, engine and trans, fenders, dash frame and wiring harness amongst other smaller items. Goal is to have it moving under it's own power again in 2 weeks (hopefully nothing happened to the engine whilst it slept) and pretty much assembled by the end of July. I already have a date at my upholstery guy to drop it off the 1st week of August. I plan to paint the hood and finish the bodywork on the trunk lid while it is getting fresh threads. Hey Bantum, if you would like to donate for me to paint the inside, I will do it. If I had enough I would have done it, but I only have enough to finish what I have! Paint is expensive! (and time consuming). Steve (Kosta), I see you stopped back in. I told you your FF1 would get done before mine. -

I have officially turned the corner. Engine compartment, doors/hinges, and some other small items have color! Next is to finish the front valence and rear taillight panel then the shell can get color. As long as I can get the shell done by the end of June, I should be on track to debut this at JCCS. -
Can anyone post measurements for the back glass of a FF1 and gen 1 DL sedan? Are the corners square or rounded? Mark

BUMP I highlighted in green the stuff I will need soon. I fully expect to start reassembly in July and it would be nice to have the rubbers, if any exist. Paul, Nolan???? Hell, if someone has a good section of the weatherstrip I could try and match up with universal stuff that would help. All the door and quarter rubber was totally roached on mine.
