  1. Well guys. Had some issues in these 2 threads: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=135673 and http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=135892 Mellow65, you had it correct! Thanks a ton! There you guys go! Pretty bad lifter tick, and I need to get some hose clamps and coolant in it so I can run it longer and hope the tick goes away. Im assuming its burning off oil somewhere cuz there was a small amount of smoke/steam coming from the heater core ports on the motor as well as around the valve covers (as you can see me checking out in the video) Big thanks to USMB, GeneralDisorder - for answering my phone calls and pestering questions, and my friends that came out and helped... Im satisfied that the car is going to be okay
  2. Unless you plan to REALLY destroy your belts, run coverless. I did my drivers timing belt when it broke in about 30 minutes explaining the process to my sister who kept asking questions. The engine is non-interference and the belts are relatively cheap... so if you snap one with the covers off, its no big deal, but its unlikely youll snap one. Im even running coverless on my dads 1990 Legacy (first gen EJ22 so non-interference as well) Also with the covers off you can keep an eye on things, pinpoint any leaks and if your car starts running weird, you can check the timing first. --- Dont know if it was mentioned, but in some of the car manuals it says to put both cam pulleys up... its actually put the first cam pulley at TDC (top dead center) put the belt on, rotate the engine a full 180* and then put the other cam pulley at TDC and you should have perfect timing. Worked on my 86 GL easily and I had to laugh when my neighbor said without a timing gun my car wouldnt start, fired right up
  3. So this is the starter that came out of my 1990 Legacy: Notice the gear is completely exposed. Here is the starter that I got from a 1992 Legacy in the junkyard: Notice the gear is covered by metal... I guess I can put it in and see if it'll work. But seems itd be different... Anyone dealt with a FWD vs AWD Legacy? Maybe the flywheel is different and therefore the gear is different?
  4. Grabbed one off a first gen (today was half off day at PNP) Theres a guard type thing OVER the gear that mine didnt have, Im 99 percent sure it wont fit, but I got a receipt and I dropped the starter out right as he said "We close in 5 mins please exit" type thing... so when I saw it was different I said oh well.... Ill return it later... but still, this is confusing, why the change?
  5. What is the difference between a PRE March 1990 Starter and a POST March 1990 starter? I have starter part number 17170 which appears to be universal clear up until a 2004 Baja including Legacy, Loyale, etc... BUT Ive heard the car Ive got is a very early 1990 Legacy because the bumpers are black as opposed to body color...? So if it is universal, the starter from a 1996 Outback should fit it right
  6. It turns, its just incredibly tough to turn... I thought about taking it apart and seeing if I could grease up the parts that looked rusty, but I have a feeling this is not a good plan, at least not one that would imply quality.
  7. We pushed it backwards and it attempted to fire, then pushed it back into the driveway. RE: what it does Start to crank you get a single TICK Stop cranking get another TICK but nothing inbetween (though I can hear the fuel pump) its gonna SMELL awesome when it starts haha Going to get a OEM used from a place for about $35 and replace the contacts for about $10 and throw it in. Went to autozone with this one and it PASSED their test... but it fooled their test... starter gear extends, but it doesnt turn... this is my fault, when I pressure washed the engine bay, water must have gotten in the gear and froze it/rusted it
  8. Its the starter. Damnit. Well guess Im in the market for a new starter or a used one. Good brands? Bosch is what I hear most people like...
  9. Caboobaroo said 93-2001 Impreza ones will fit on an XT6 which is 5 lug and on an RX which I would think is the same as a Loyale? Unless his RX is 5 lug and I missed that detail somewhere haha. http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=122491
  10. Battery is on the charger... lets hope that works... Pictures to go with my questions about electrical plugs: The plug that comes off the alternator plugs... looks like it goes somewhere, but unfortunately I think it goes to A/C which this Legacy (BASE) never had... but does it really just chill out there....? How about these? In the rear passenger part of the engine bay there are two plugs, seemingly a male and female electrical ends... they dont go together though... but I cant seem to find what they DO go to... though I got my O2 sensor plugged in... which will probably throw a code haha (theres got to be a reason it was unplugged to begin with) Heres a daytime picture of the motor in... Its got oil in it, the clutch is hooked up and feels great, probably needs some adjusting still though. No coolant, gotta get new hose clamps for the heater core hoses.
  11. Battery was charged but then sat for awhile... Should I take it out and charge it and then put it back in and try again?
  12. It doesnt currently :/ Starter issues? It goes: Key in Key crank starter goes "TICK" Key uncranked starter goes "TICK" again... Obviously an engage and disengage... but it doesnt actually crank the motor over.. :/
  13. So, put my timing belt from eBay (mizumoauto) on my motor... Used their timing marks, and they all lined up correctly... put the tensioners on and everything and STILL was lined up... Put it in the car and had to hand crank the motor until the clutch stuff lined up... now, its off teeth... even fully cranking the motor a few times... How did this happen? Can I adjust the timing belt without removing it and having to compress the tensioner again?
  14. Im pretty sure timing belt/water pump needs to be done at 105,000 miles... That is REALLY expensive for a 1993 FWD EJ18. My friend paid 1800 for his 1995 EJ18, 5 speed with about 123K miles. 2K would be a decent price as its really clean... But Id think you can find a nicer one if you kept looking...
  15. It was great in the mudpit! I hated watching from the side, but I had to leave Ned at home next year if theres a mudpit, Ill have something for it... Maybe not Ned as I hope to have work done on him that will render him useless to thrash on haha
  16. Unfortunately, thats all it is. I need to get another Legacy to compare some stuff to... Plus... Decided that since my garage is a mess (as you can tell by the pictures) I would take any bolts that I couldnt stick back into their holes, would go into bags and be labeled (awesome idea right, I take no credit) Well... One bag... labeled MISC PIECES went missing somehow... So now I think Im missing a spring clip for my clutch cable, a bolt on my clutch cable, the alternator tensioner bolt, and the mount that holds my EVAP canister on :/ guess I push the Lego into the street and find the parts, then fix it and fire it up... But today it has radiator, hoses, and a starter hooked back in... Its getting close.
  17. Pooparu had a turbo'd EA71 there? I only saw his BRAT, didnt see the hatch or anything else... The only widebody EA71 I saw was Mike Appels green one...?
  18. I do recall you saying not the axle nut... you were close
  19. To any viewers thanks for stickin along... My buddy Garrett came over and we dropped the motor in... Hopefully tomorrow Ill throw some fluids in, get some connections connected and the radiator and associated hoses on there and fire it up... If that doesnt work then Legacy go
  20. Thread kinda died... I know Im slow... Parts today... New PCV piping from block to intake manifold... $23 from Subaru in stock I got this because the other one was cracked and repaired with electrical tape... could explain my funky idle...? New serpentine belt today 16.95 FROM Subaru was actually cheaper than most of the parts stores I called (for a better belt than "Valucraft which should fit it" Progress made (so far, got some friends coming soon to do more work and hopefully install tonight) -Thermo housing on (this is the STANT thermostat that is stickied on the main page VS the one I pulled out of the cars old thermo-housing... Notice how shiny clean the new parts are! As it sits as of 438pm Oregon time: In this photo you see the NGK wires, NGK plugs were installed, WP by-pass is on the motor now with the new thermostat in... Still to do is the timing belt (need to compress tensioner still) and everything associated with dropping the motor back in
  21. Progress for today: Intake gaskets put on (and intake) - Im a little worried about this area... Im gonna bring in another EJ22 hopefully to make sure I dont screw things up since tomorrow is my last day to finish this if I hope to bring NED to WCSS -Water pump on and sealed -Cam seals on -Cam o-rings on (front and rear) I need to do the timing belt, finally figured it out (Thanks GeneralDisorder for the easy instructions!) but of course when I go to compress the tensioner, I cant find my tool for it (thanks brother for using it and not bringing it back ) and so hopefully I can do that tomorrow and get it dropped into the car before long... there WILL be a video whether it implodes or not... I will add todays blurry picture in a second... laptop wants updates now apparently.
  22. Its load bearing whatever it is... and its on the right rear of the car... Turning left (more weight on right rear) gives it: "unbearably louder" sounds.. where as less weight (turning right and lifting the weight off that tire) makes the sound disappear... Drum brakes still but dont think thats the cause... I wonder if the hub went bad?
