Ugh! Timing belt woes
92_rugby_subie replied to 92_rugby_subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
It is a risk... but the way to see it... Without timing covers a timing belt job takes 30-45 minutes... and if you (like I shouldve) had spares, its something that can be done on the side of the highway if the belt should break. Ive gone offroading and puddle jumping with no issues until the other night (about 10k miles after the new belts were on) and since I wont be doing anymore offroading, I think my belts will be safe for awhile... The EJ22T install will definitely have timing belts though. Its not really a big deal that it broke because my friend had a brand new spare set, it was just weird because the belt went and I lost my right-side headlight (didnt work) and then when I got the car started with the new belt, it came on, but hes running great now... I got the timing spot on -
Your PM box is full... Can you send me photos... I may know someone whos interested... if I had the $400 youd have cash already, I love the 360s. Rugby_boy101@yahoo.com

Thats my idea. To put fog lights in an 87+ bumper where the turn signals are... I wanna put fogs that turn on (with the angel eyes) as my running lights... and have my corner markers the turn signals... I want to paint the corners yellow like OBK25XT did on his Loyale so I may have to use LED style bulbs to be bright enough... I did a test with the stock lights and you CAN see them, but its not great. -

I have no clue So, I take it timing belt breaking has nothing to do with the power door locks not currently working? -

Wont happen. I love this car. I have so many plans... I guess Im gonna have to get a *good* alarm system and stuff... I just cant understand why some stuff stopped working right now... battery is still hooked up and stuff... its not dead or anything :/ -
Timing belt broke on Ned tonight in mid-drive... Sisters account (she was driving him) - heard what sounded like a fuse blew - engine stopped - tries to turn over but wont fire (no spark) So I went, tried to start him with key, again, no avail. Sounded like compression test does so that told me it wasnt getting spark. Looked under hood, didnt suspect timing belts as they have less than 20k on them. 10 minutes later (and several push start attempts) nothing. So lifted hood again and sister said something was dangling below front bumper... it was my driver side timing belt... LOOKS half cut and half torn (think somebody is $&^2ing with my car) Now, weird things: Why would timing belt break at 1/3 of its life (yes I am coverless) Why dont my power door locks work right now? HID headlights, only left one turns on and the right one is hissing now (was working before car shut off)

Need HID Headlamps - I can't see!
92_rugby_subie replied to rdweninger's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Okay, Im about to post a longer post... so standby... Longer post: Look around for Turbones conversion to projectors... thats what Im going to go with eventually. I DO currently have 6000K HID headlamps in my stock GL housings (Loyale housings) and they are brighter, but from experience of being in front of the car, they are really bright for other drivers... Simply put, the HIDs are not meant for our housings so the light bounces around and doesnt actually PROJECT light like is needed. I went HID because I tried even Sylvania Silverstars or whatever that are "the brightest white light" at 4300K temperature and didnt have the light I wanted. GD still does the 90amp alternators, just gotta give him a heads-up. Turbones conversion is here: http://www.ultimatesubaru.org/forum/showthread.php?t=125187 If this is a bit too much for you (Im even worried I may screw it up) then go with HIDs, but dont go any brighter than 6000K as the higher the temperature (xxxxK) the more "blue" that gets in it and the less visible and more annoying they become (also the more illegal they go) 6000K is the most white/blue mixture for the best visibility... Heres my 86 GL with 6000K HIDs (no shots of on the road yet since I dont have my stock headlamps anymore) How its set-up (ish) -
Nope says unavailable for me (but I just signed out) I was thinking of someday joining you guys. My 86 GL has plans of being low, but someday I want a lifted subaru, and you guys look like you have way more fun then I do haha

I hate seeing subarus get munched, Im just glad that people are safe when they do get munched. -
I thought about running premium in mine.... but a mash the gas, Ill wait til I have a job to afford it... and by then... EJ22T will be going in
-
Where do you guys get your gas? I run regular in mine with an Octane rating of 87
-
Sounds nice! I plan to re-do my exhaust. Going with a UEL, 2" back to a 2.5" glasspack followed by a magnaflow muffler on an EA82
-
+1 8 hour drive? Easy fun and WE CAN DO IT!
-
They dont seem to break sedan tail lights though, otherwise mine would be sold by now haha. Kickass time you guys had though

Hey guys, Bob got a Loyale!

Rockauto.com has great prices. Pretty stellar customer service too... Ive had a few hiccups, but thats to be expected every now and then. There arent *too* many mods, its a 90 HP car... But you can get torque cams from Delta Cams (your cams sent in, torque grind applied, sent back to you) As for a REAL mod, EJ22 swap boosts you to about 135 horsepower but its a lot of work and wiring to be changed. -
Maybe an EJ207 into a forester, or an EJ257 into a forester...?
-
Might wanna move this into the newer gen forum... But. Timing belt kits last sometimes 60k on some EA and EJ engines and 105K on other EJ engines... If hes had that car since 50K and never done it... it may go... but these belts are actually pretty hard to break... but its worth replacing when you get it. Check junkyards for transmissions, your local craigslist may have a Legacy being parted out as well.
