So this question pertains to the 5 lug swap. Found an XT6 car, blown motor... my idea is to buy it (super cheap) swap the 5 lug to the GL and then scrap the rest, basically getting a free 5 lug set-up... and sway-bars etc... what all can I use? The whole 5 lug? Swaybars? Anything else performance wise? An AWD swap with an EJ transmission is also in the future. I want to do the rear e-brake conversion, but I also want to upgrade my brakes.... putting an EJ22T in the car, I need whoa to go with the go... ya know? (Cool story bro) Can I upgrade bigger brakes? Like WRX brakes with the 5 lug swap? I am going with 17" wheels so Im not worried about clearance issues.

Facepalm lol Not a fan of huge rims like that :-p -
For the cheap power build. If it will work, do it. EJ22 ~ 135 EJ25 ~ 165 Frankenmotor ~ 180 And its just a headgasket job, which hes doing anyway.

Hung out with some PNW Subaru Enthusiasts this weekend... First meet only had a few people but the second one had a few more and a cruise up to Skyline I was surprised that nobody wanted to laugh at NED... I never wanted to hang with that kinda crowd because Id been to meets before where nobody knew he was a Subaru but everyone at the meet got a kick out of him... a few even knew he was a GL and asked what my plans were!

best 10000k hid conversion for 82 brat???
92_rugby_subie replied to sube101's topic in Subaru Retrofitting
I love reading the negative comments on HID lights. I run 6000K HIDs on mine. Yes they are blue, but they are very bright. You go to 8000K they have less light, more blue... so thats why I chose the 6000K lights. I can see down the road very well and people see me... really well. Its all about the aiming and projection... My housings were NOT built for this kind of lighting, so its not correct, and if I get a fix-it ticket, into the garage and onto Turbones conversion. (Turbone did a very nice projector set-up that I plan to do soon, just havent had the funds yet.) He did his the correct way, and if you have some time, wait until GD does it as you can be reassured he will do things correctly. At night: During the day: -

The super low profile that you see on those old school cars with 26" rims I at least want an inch of tire all around, Id prefer at least a few inches though... so I can have real tires.

I have plans of a 5 lug swap on 05 Legacy GT wheels. They are the 5 spoke ones. 55mm offset 17" I want to run tires so that I fill up the wheel well. My 195/60/15s looked great, filled the wheel wells, but I wasnt lowered. Now I was thinking of lowering an inch? Maybe I should keep it stock? I still plan to DD NED after the 5 lug swap, and use him in the snow (when Oregon gets it). Although, an option is just to put 15/16" steelies on him with winter tires.... Im wondering who has done a 17"+ wheel on their GL wagon/sedan? Do you have pictures and specs. Im talking either stock height or lowered, not interested in the lifted rigs at the moment (sorry) EDIT: PS, I do NOT want pancake tires either... I dont mind low profile if I need to.

NED and I love the snow. FINALLY got some in Hillsboro Oregon. I have to say, it really is so much fun to drift around the neighborhoods and feel in control and safe. Went out later, no more snow, but there were a few cars in the ditch with "Dont tow me!" signs. Before warm-up After some drifting: -

Cam Belt Covers Revisited
92_rugby_subie replied to robm's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I run coverless because if the timing belt does go, its about 30 mins to change them, and you keep a spare set and a few tools so you arent stranded... I know several people that say "oh its too hard to change those, Ill just go til they break" and then boom, they are stranded. I dont have that problem. With that said though, if you have a lot of gravel roads or brush to drive through, put the covers on. Also, make sure no oil or anything is dripping on them as that will decrease their life expectancy. I have a friend that has just over 91k on his 55-60k belts... and hes coverless, has a brand new set in his backseat, when they break, hes gonna be on the side of the road for about 30-45 minutes but its a lot better than a few hours. -
It looks so small under those tires... Not so small when I hit it

PDX Alignment Shop?
92_rugby_subie replied to kayakertom's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
I'm happy with Paceway frame and axle in Hillsboro. It cost me either 39.95 or 49.95 for my 4WD alignment after I did tierods and wheel bearings -
I saw this rock and thought it was a mud mound and drove right over it... stopped the car... had to throw it in reverse and still couldnt move, had to put it in 4LO (from 4HI) and power through it.. very loud scraping... and I uprooted the rock as you can see. Its a good size rock... Its at least 3 times as wide as my tire treads. It was still a great day... had a lot of fun... I am terrible at taking pictures... this hill is pretty awesome... but looks lame from the top

How many miles can it go?
92_rugby_subie replied to Todd GT5's topic in Meet n' Greet. Your USMB Welcome Center
Ya know, I would stay around the 1990-1994 Legacy's as they are non-interference and up until the 1996 EJ22 it stays that way (to my knowledge of what Ive gathered) I REALLY was trying to get my friends to jump on the 180k 1996 Outback 5 speed because it was the only year that the Legacy had outback suspension, EJ22 and 5 speed all at once in the states... So its not all over the place, and its a great combonation of ability, reliabilty and cool factor (tons say its an old lady car, personally, dont think so) -

Youre in Oregon Shoulda read that GD is in West Linn and does timing belt jobs for I think $300 including the kit (he will correct me if Im wrong) and is very thorough with his work. Hes got a 300k+ mile story about a Legacy that hes worked on. But Ive been on Craigslist everyday searching for soobs for friends... theres a nice 1996 5 speed outback with the EJ22 with 180k and a salvage title for 2K. If I had the 2K Id probably take it. Theres several first gen legacy's too, but I dont know anyone interested in those at the moment. -

+1 Drive it til it dies, keeping an eye on Craiglist. As you said your options are to replace the car or replace the motor. Personally, Id replace the motor and replace the struts. If your EJ22 is running strong, youll be surprised at how long it lasts, I believe Ive seen 3-4 posts about different Legacy's with 300-350k+ miles on them... A timing belt job shouldnt run more than 3-400 and should include new idlers and water pump too. Add some really good struts for another few hundred plus labor (you could swap these over to a new car) and keep driving it. But if you want to spend 3500 on a Legacy, youd find a REALLY nice one... the 1990-1994 Legacy's around here are under 2K with low miles, if they are higher, they are turbo, or the owners have some good smokes.
