Welcome to you guys. You will find any info you need, as well as receive ideas from other members on what they have done to their Subarus. Youll love this forum. Have a great time! -
Its a nice one, but needs lots of work. But its "rare" I guess, one of the last like 75 or 100 off the line before Plymouth made the tanks for the war. Flathead 6 engine needs complete rebuild or engine swap, I wanna convert to a 12 volt system. Basically make it look like the hearse I built when I was 15, but the hearse was over 10k invested lol. Ned says Hi My school got a kick out of his license plate, had to tell them his plate number for my parking permit and she just laughed.
-
I cleaned out the garage, or at least one side of it so Ned can go inside... Some jimmy marks near the gas tank and at least 3 full tanks of gas gone tell me its best to put him inside at night, getting expensive at about 49 dollars per tank or a locking gas cap is an option, but I dont know, I dont want them to break that too Pardon the plymouth on the side (1942) that will someday be restored and sold and I will buy myself a 22B or build myself a 22B replica lol

Gas light not working?
92_rugby_subie replied to 92_rugby_subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Both tail-lights do leak, so I suppose rust in the back is probably likely.... My speedometer works, but is a few off cuz of the bigger tires... Im told at 60, Im going 58.24 so... yea lol, I was going ~ 35 lol. I only put $20 in it so I dont really know how much I had used, I hope to not take it low like that again, I know its bad for them. -
So I have been carefully shifting to make my gas reserve last as long as possible until I got gas money from my mom (I know sad isnt it ) But I noticed that I dont have a gas light thats working. The spot is there, I can see it in just the right light, but it never lights up... Proof, heres where my car was last night, and my Loyale came on before this so why isnt my 1986 GL Sedan lighting up? Sorry its blurry, 35 mph was probably not the best time to snap a pic, but its below the E and nothin came on...

Agreed, I love seeing ALL the subarus, not just the older gen and Legacies...

+1 on redoing it yourself or taking it to Rick (GeneralDisorder) down here. Ive got a nice oil leak on start-up when cold, so Rick and I are looking at it this weekend, probably needed to do the rear main or something, but looking at the engine bay (although mine has a carburetor) its very open and shouldnt take longer than 30-40 minutes to pull it out, give yourself 2-3 hours to do all the seals (might as well do timing belt/water pump since you have it out) Just my opinion.

Thats too close to us, I liked the drive with the other Subarus

Moved to cali now clutch is acting up

Do you know someone with an engine lift? Maybe post an ad on Craigslist, saying you need to rent one for a day or so, maybe $50 a day? or something... Jack up the car, put it on jackstands. position the engine hoist, and then hook it up, jack it until the chain has tension. Then remove the 4 bolts on the tranny(two top, two bottom), then the exhaust bolts, should be 4 bolts (2 on each side) then the two motor mount bolts. Jack the tranny up with a bottle jack, only until the motor mounts pop out of place, then jack the engine until you can separate the engine and tranny, pull the engine out and replace the clutch, or at least inspect it. This is the best way I know of, I apologize if it isnt much help -
+1 on a flat surface. My brother AMAZED me at a stop light in my 240sx when he got it to move uphill without pushing the gas... I was so amazed until I learned how to do it, now its boring. Slowly, and I mean slowly let off the clutch, the car will start to roll forward ( so dont be near a wall ) and where you feel the rpms drop and the car start to roll forward is your release point, this is the easiest way to do it without frying your clutch. My experience comes from my 86 GL, 93 240sx.

+1 on GD He does a great job and is very meticulous about his work.

Hes seen the messages from me and Rick, he knows what needs to be done, but now his friend says he can do it super cheap and that he doesnt need all the upgraded stuff unless hes going to race it, but for extra power for hills and stuff, all he needs is an engine.

So... Just to get a little history... When you towed it, it wasnt in 4WD at all? How was it up on the tow dolly? Sounds like something was damaged in the tow... -
I have no issues doing simple things for free... If materials are supplied, especially for friends... I wouldnt be doing the swap, Rick would, Im sure Id help, but it would be Ricks Business, not me, I just referred him to Rick because, in my opinion, Rick is the most knowledeable to Subarus and the swaps. But I think I will just tell him to do some reading, print out and hand him that manual that was linked above and wish him luck.
-
Im debating it. I mean the drama over him being mad cuz I wont help him makes me wanna just tell him to *ahem* himself and laugh when the swap isnt done right. But at the same time, if by miracle they do get it running doing it wrong, how long before it breaks, loses control and hurts someone. Im kinda torn between sitting back and watching him screw it up or helping him for free (Ive changed hoses, oil, coolant, etc) and havent seen a cent so eh.

That job doesnt look too bad. I know someone with an EA82T sedan that has 205/75/15s on it but the fenders were cut by previous owner and from a distance (and up close obviously) you can tell the hack job was terrible. Yours looks clean. Nice job! -
Well I told him I wasnt going to help him at all on it, and he is pretty spiteful towards me... But I realized how hard this swap would be, and I told him it all the way, now hes just super happy because I told him to plan on 2k-3k for the swap and now hes incredibly happy that it will cost him $700-800 for an engine and thats it. I wish people werent so ignorant

Its hard, my trust on craigslist is kinda low. Picked up my set of 195-60-15s for $140 for all of them put on my rims... Tire went flat, took it to him since they came with a 30 day warranty on 1-28-11 (this was on the 25th that I went) so I was under warranty but apparently warranty only covers it if I have a blow out... GREAT, so I can have a blow out, lose control, hit a few other cars and Ill have reassurance that my tire (not TIRES) will be replaced... ugh haha. Oh well, soon Ill have the money for them lol. -
I just want to confirm what is needed for this swap... I have been arguing with a friend who doesnt want to pay $1000 for labor on this engine swap plus parts. His argument: His "Buddy" does cars. Has done SEVERAL engine swaps into all kinds of cars and built custom frames to fit bigger engines etc. Heres what his friend said: Yea I got an engine lift man, bring me an engine we will fit it in. I told him whatever, Ill find him an EJ22 and then I call the front row seat to watch them screw it up 100X before either the motor or the car gets ruined and the owner goes crazy cuz he doesnt have a daily driver anymore. So he says hes got this project handled for under 1k in parts because all he needs is a low mileage EJ22. Lets see, I know of these: Adapter Timing belt kit (duh, why not do it when you have the engine out) Wiring harness (trimmed of all the unnecessary crap) EJ22 Upgraded clutch Flywheel What else am I missing? The car the swap is going into is a 1986 GL-10 Sedan, 4WD Pushbutton, 5 speed manual with 260k.
