Need help with an 87 GL
92_rugby_subie replied to xeirxes's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
If its carbureted... Its most likely that (the dying). The hitatchi carbs (although Ill get some argument here) are completely worthless. Go with a Weber if its financially stable for you to do so... Id go with the 32/36 DGEV since its an electric choke, you dont have to mess with the mixture. Then, when you start it (at least with my manual transmission) pump the gas a few times BEFORE you turn it over, then when it starts, it should rev up to over 1400-1600 rpms by itself (dont push the gas or anything) and slowly climb as you leave it. Give it like 5 minutes of this, then push the gas and the RPMs will descend. This is how I warm up my carburetor in the morning. My knowledge is from my 1986 GL Sedan and my (past) 1984 DL Sedan, both carbureted. Hope this helps -
Today I am continuing my, one wheel at a time project... Just mounted the wheel back on Ned, I didnt think the difference was soo..... hmm intense.. lol. Itll be even more intense when I get access to a wire wheel and can grind down the lugs and paint them Im thinking white (to stand out on the black) or possibly red (again, to stand out on the black) Before/After: Ned with wheel mounted:

Strut replacement for 86 GL Sedan
92_rugby_subie replied to 92_rugby_subie's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Will check this, but since it has been torn apart and put back together multiple times to figure out what the sound could be, its unlikely, but it could be a simple fix, so I will check it. -
Whats the best way to do this? I have a 1986 GL Sedan that does its fair share of loud noise when I turn... The noise goes away after ~ 5-10 miles of driving. I had heard it could be strut wear, and its only on the right side, and also gives uneven tirewear, which I have not seen with my new tires (from 185/70/13 to 195/60/15) even though next to eachother, the stock tires/wheels and my new ones appear to be the same exact size. What should I do? I like the sound of KYB GR2 struts, but unsure of the total cost of this. Also, I planned to do a little bit of a lowering kit on it in the future, but would it make more sense do to it now (not right this minute, finances will not allow it) when I do the struts?

Most 80s Subarus dont unfortunately... you can buy aftermarket ones... Or if yours isnt dual range, the spot between the e-brake and the driver seat makes a nice "Double Gulp" holder.. Just watch your accelerations and stops. -
+1 Theres so many Id like to put on Ned. I love ScoobyClimbs sticker "Ill Get You and Your Little Prius Too" The stupid guy at the detail place scrubbed my rear window too hard and took off my USMB sticker so now it said: ww_.ult_mat_sub_ru.o_g So I had him take it off, wont go there again... Gotta get one of those. a 4WD decal (but I wanna put a d/r logo near it too)

I might have to do that. I think Im gonna just sand them and spray them when I dont have anything to do on a weekend, just put the old 13s on... Which are for sale. I gotta update that.

I think we had to do that on that OBS... Will consider it, right now have someone looking to take it away for parts Wants the tranny for $200 Wheels for $50 Front seats for $50 Alternator (brand new with Warranty) for $75 Trunk and hood for $100 etc... Pretty much had at least 600 in stuff he wanted, that hed pull. I told him I didnt have the space and he said that he could take it away for $500. I told him that the engine was useless unless rebuilt so he could have it for $400, and he said wed meet in the middle at $450 and save us both the hassle, he said hed consider it, so I make a few bucks and get the eye sore outta Neds spot:clap:

Definitely still interested in the corner lights for EA82.
Still dont have a set to send you, should I go pick some up from the junkyard to send? I could send you some from the yard and when you send them back painted, I could just send you mine for "in stock cores" if anyone else is interested

Just an update: Waterpump is screwed... The timing belt is skipping all over the place Also found NO COOLANT in the radiator so... F**K Gonna continue its tear down, if its not too bad, will put new timing belt, waterpump and start it up, drive it for 1k or so miles and if its still alive with no issues, it goes... BYE BYE time to kick back and see what happens If things are screwed, it will go up on here as a parts car... Has a good transmission, amazing interior, some straight panels etc (not currently parting out)

Thinking about taking the plunge.

The 2.5 has headgasket issues. The new updated headgaskets (available at the Subaru dealership) solve this issue, or at least keep it from happening as much. The 2.2 is a bulletproof motor, non interference and not so much of a headgasket issue, just take care of it, regular oil changes, spark plugs, etc, keep in maintained, Im sure somewhere on here there was a guy doing maintenance on his Legacy with 300k+ miles... -
I love the legacies... But my DD is Ned, and Ned is the cheapest car Ive purchased that wasnt a piece of crap... My 85 DL was a dream come true, except the manual locks, windows etc. My 92 Loyale was pretty amazing too, had the good options. My 83 Wagon was, well, a wiring nightmare My 84 DL was just... Messed up, got it fixed, but still wasnt what I needed. Then I got Ned, 1986 GL Sedan, the luxury options of my Loyale with the looks of my 85 DL that my dad gave me, so Im just happy. Low miles, it will run forever Im happy. I know Ive said this a million times but I just love Subarus, and Ned... Ned wont get traded in, hell my subaru dealership said theyd give me 1000 trade in for him as a car, and 1000 more for him being a subaru, I still said no. Hes worth a lot more than 2000 to me. Still funny though, whenever I go to get parts, my dealership knows him by name "Hey marshall, what does Ned need to get down the road today?" "Ah nothin, its for the crappy turbo that wishes it was Ned" hahahaha:lol:
