$200 winter car has turned into an obsession.

If you’re trying to max your fuel economy you might try using a block heater. I put mine on a timmer to start two hours before I leave for work. Saves fuel, keeps me warm, and my car doesn't make that Subaru piston slap noise on cold days. I don't know if it save's money, but we have relatively cheap power, 5 cents a KWH, so I don't care.

I think a narrower tire would help some, but it wouldn't save you the cost of the new tires. If you do get new tires, look for tires that are advertised to save fuel, they should have lower rolling resistance. When I went with slightly bigger tires my gas mileage did decrease slightly, but I think it was under 1%. I'll try and pull out the records and calculate the average today.

Thanks for the advice. The noise is gone! I took the brakes apart thoroughly cleaned everything, re-lubed the slide pins, and put fresh anti squeal on the back of the pads. Everything looked good, but there was a lot of dust packed in everywhere. I'm guessing the pads were just not sliding freely from the dust build up.

I have squealing sound coming from the front left tire when i'm turning right, fast or slow. The break being lightly applied doesn't seem to matter. I can't feel any play in the bearing when i grab the top and bottom of the tire and push and pull. The sound is there, but quieter, when i slowly rotate the tire by hand. Any ideas are appreciated.

If you care, here is a great thread on fixing the lights in climate control. Its really easy to do. On page two it gives a radio shack part number that are a lot cheaper than dealer lamps. (http://legacygt.com/forums/showthread.php/change-heater-control-lights-95-99-legacy-26408.html As for the stock radio, i'm pretty sure you have to solder in some new lights, but it's cake.. I i used an LED and a resistor so i wouldn't have do it again.

That was not my experience with radiator barn. There website said i should get it in two days. After four days i called to see if i could get a tracking number, they acted really put out to get it, but they did. it ended up taking a full five days after i ordered it. Fine, sometimes things get delayed, but there was no reason for them to be rude.

I switched my 1997 2.5 litter to syntetiic at 200k just becuase i got a great deal on oil. It's still running fine 50k latter, but i'm sure it would be running the same on dino oil too. Also i run 10-30 sometimes in the summer if i'm going to be towing or what not. It doesn't seem to make it tick any more than other subs do when cold......
