  1. Oh yes. I found twenty bucks in the underfloor of an EA82 wagon once...always worth a look.
  2. Brian, the combination of the 1400cc engine (which is notorious for blowing head gaskets) and the 3-speed automatic--a very troublesome unit for Subaru and in its first year no less--is cause for some concern. Of course it would be great if you kept the car original--but a 1600cc engine and 4- or 5-speed swap would serve you much better from both a reliability and driveability standpoint. 1975 had improved hg's and a two-port exhaust as opposed to the four-port on earlier models. But it was close to the end of development for that engine. SoNE's computer (and most of the local dealership's records) only go back to 1981. The oldest car they have in their records (other than ones I've brought in) is a 1986 GL-10 sedan that hasn't been serviced in over a year.
  3. Stage 1's were 1300 or 1400cc, shorter front ends, slightly different doors and front fenders. Fenders are not interchangeable. Doors are but will look slightly off. Stage IIs have 1600cc engines (I guess you could argue 1800cc for the last couple years of the Gen 1 Brat), the different body work, red and amber taillights as opposed to the primarily solid-red of the Gen 1's (though some later ones did ship with red and amber, I think). Also, Gen II's lost the nifty "town & country horn" setup that the '75s and early production '76 4WDs shipped with.
  4. So what's your best guess as to why it was only clunking in 2WD?
  5. Legacies and Outbacks have a bad reputation for rust near the fuel-filler neck--and a hole in your fuel storage/delivery system has been rumoured to negatively impact gas mileage. I'd guess you're leaking unburned fuel as opposed to the backpressure from the exhaust doing in your mileage. How much gas are you using, on average, and what kind of driving do you do? Mileage? Last tuneup? Tire pressure right, and is the CEL on?
  6. And when was the last time you replaced the 02 sensor? Even if you don't have a CEL yet it may be on its way out...also, maybe the same GULF gas station is your problem. Try to find a high-traffic Mobil and fill it with premium, then record your mileage on the second tank.
  7. Mine came from Advance Auto, the ones in the Justy (still good) were $35 for a pair and the ones in my Beetle (went through five bulbs last winter but haven't replaced one since) were around $22 each bulb, also at Advance. I make a consicous effort to avoid Wal Mart and have been there once in the past year.
  8. It was a nod, a wink and a garage owner that's known my great aunt for forty years that got my '83 Rabbit through inspection the last time before I moved here...
  9. 1975 1400DL wagon: 4-speed shift knob Center console Black carpet set--front seats (both) Air-conditioning manual for dealer-installed air (photocopy will do) Owner's manual Front driver's window regulator Door handles and lock set for both doors on driver's side 1973 split-tailgate 1400DL wagon: Bumper sections, unrusted, far left and right rear Good wooden shift knob for 4-speed (not urgent--my dealer-install is cracked and reglued) Correct 1973 wagon hubcaps with orange painted trim, or what have you for nice Stage 1 caps/alloys. 1970-71 FF1. Would prefer wagon, will take any. MUST BE IN LOWER 48. I don't want to deal with importation from Canada, let alone shipping from Australia, sorry.
  10. Hey, as long as you're offering, wanna finance it too? I have two 360s...
  11. Mine ('94 4WD 5-speed) does around 3800...maybe I have something wrong with mine but I don't think you have anything to worry about.
  12. D/R 5spd from a GL wagon/3-door? Or an RX FT4WD unit? Distributing power among 4 wheels constantly, as opposed to between two, would presumably make a significant difference as long as you weren't trying to break traction on all four wheels at once from a standing, dry start. I think this is probably best for WJM or JwX (or one of the other resident Subie race-car owners). Or if you have the part-time 4WD setup, ask Austin or Noah.
  13. Oil overfill can also kill a cat, or gas that was mixed with leaded for some reason or had high sulfur content. As far as the emissions warranty--dunno if the 100k US would cover you as presumably you are in Canada, having your car serviced at a Canadian dealer. (Are there 45K miles or 45K km on the car...and was the car originally sold in Canada?)
  14. '00 and later is either "Legacy" or "Outback". The only place you may see "Legacy Outback" is on your insurance or registration paperwork as Subaru separated these two model lines in 2000 for marketing purposes. In '05 they were further differentiated when the Outback (sedan and wagon) became classified as light trucks for EPA CAFE standards. Yours (two-tone paint, side cladding, dual-reflector headlamps and raised ride height) is an Outback.
  15. We didn't get the Justy here 'til '87, and in '88 in 4wd guise. '94 was the last year worldwide for all-Subaru Justies. '96 and later are totally badge engineered--that car was sold under at least six different nameplates, with Suzuki holding some exclusive rights in some places (turbo in the States with the Swift GTi, marketing, period, in Japan, etc.) and Subaru retaining 4WD rights in Europe. The Justy is still being sold in Europe--it's a rebadged Suzuki Ignis although it looks a lot like Subaru's own Pleo. It's probable that it will be dropped and replaced on the European market with the R2 in the not too distant future. It's already been pulled from Great Britain. 1991: Suzuki Swift's first model year Sold as: Suzuki Swift Suzuki Cultus (Japan) Geo Metro (also in convertible version) Pontiac Firefly later, in Australia/NZ: Holden Barina These models were all redesigned in 1995, put on the market as 1996 models and were joined by the new Justy. In 1998, when the Geo brand folded, the Metro was rebadged a Chevy. Currently no former Geo models are still being sold as Chevrolets--the Swift is gone (replaced by a Daewoo, the Aveo); the Corolla (Chevy/Geo Prizm) was totally replaced by the Cavalier and now the Aveo; the Tracker is gone (replaced by the homegrown Equinox/Torrent); and the Storm didn't stick around long enough to have to be rebadged. Here's the newest Swift at the Paris auto show: http://www.automobilemag.com/auto_shows/paris_2004/0411_swift/ Note it has nothing in common with the current G3X Justy.
  16. I've had very good luck with Sylvania Silverstar bulbs. Expensive but worth it. You might also try treating the outside of the reflector with rain-x. As for Loyales--the auto seatbelts, the build quality (more resources were going into the Legacy and Impreza), the rear light !!!, the seat fabric (although I find the seats comfortable) looks cheesy even if it is hard wearing, and the total lack of rustproofing. Still haven't seen a rotted Impreza, but all the Loyales around here are toast--usually worse than the GLs and DLs still on the road.
  17. My daily driver has been either a 2001 New Beetle or a '94 Subaru Justy...and I've got to give the Justy the edge, hands-down, for reliability, gas mileage, and snow handling. The Bug is a little more comfortable and a lot more powerful--and in constant dollars cost three times as much new. The Justy also has better fit and finish. If I could get a nice GL-10 turbo 5-speed, I'd let the Beetle go and keep the two Subies. But the Bug was assembled in Mexico so that may have something to do with the reliability... Anyways, love my Subies, especially compared to the Veedubs--and I won't drive anything else.
  18. Nope, Qman got the years right. My '84 wagon's had the retrofit done (expertly, I might add) by a former board member. However, you need to swap the grille (and headlights for later-model GLs) or cut a hole in the mesh in your later-style grille for it to work.
  19. Monday looks probable. I still have a bug that won't go away completely but Doc says I'm not contagious. You call me and confirm--but I'd like to leave kind of early if we do do it.
  20. Hmm. Almost looks like the reverse light on my 360--maybe it was retrofitted? (my 360 sedan doesn't have the cutout on the engine lid for the single light like '69 and up models do.) It's really too bad no one here has one of these. I repeat, I am willing to pay cash and go halfway (or more!) across the country for a total rustbucket that's been sitting in a junkyard since 1974.

  22. Mick, from the limited info I have, the sedan lights fit both 2- and 4-door models. Brake/taillight on top, signal on the bottom, and reverse light center inboard. Wagon lights are brake/tail on top, signal on the bottom, and reverse apparently a separate unit somewhere in the tailgate--I don't have a clear shot of the wagon with the tailgate closed. Anyone out there have the '70 or '71 Body section of the factory repair manual?
  23. Connie, Skip, and all the other great board people out there...happy holidays and thanks for helping make this hobby fun
