  1. I prefer to think of it as owning a retired greyhound in a world of rhinoceri. Bigger is almost never better.
  2. I am neither wealthy nor intoxicated, guys. The cars keep me poor and sober Ya, if I'd known that you were the reason they were gone, Jon, I'd've picked 'em up for you. I was trying to get them for Paul, actually...too late now, I'm in PA.
  3. Me? Brag? Did you see me mention the convertible...or the GL-10 turbowagons...or the 360s...or the '75 wagon with 60K on it? I can do HTML and some stylesheets, but the Gelsoft stuff is beyond me, someone's going to have to get ahold of SubaruJunkie or someone for that
  4. Whereabouts are you? I'm about 50 miles in on I-80 ('til tomorrow morning, just passing through on my way home to CT)
  5. The heat! The humidity! The crowds! The black vinyl interior! (only time I was in Georgia I drove my '73 home from the dealer...be forewarned, though, it gets HOT down there and stays that way.)
  6. Not to brag, but my driveable '75 wagon is originally from CT, still has the original license plate, and has less miles than your three-years-newer wagon And it's a cooler color.
  7. Count me in, but probably with something newer. I have a primo 4-door Justy that'll make it, but she's a '94 (when was the last time you saw one on the road, though?) Or I can insure the '73, or my GLF (Lucky's twin). Choices, choices...
  8. I have an XT6 alt you can have, just as soon as I get back to CT. (when I find it...)
  9. Hmm...can you PM me an asking price...and does it come with tan vinyl GF seats?
  10. I seem to recall Paul spending an entire winter with a RWD turbowagon:rolleyes: but this is probably the wrong forum to post that in... I drove home from Georgia in my '73 with a pretty-much-shot boot, but made it.
  11. 1956: P1000 1000cc inline-4 cylinder, 4 door sedan. 1958: 360 sedan 1961?: Sambar van, truck, 360 convertible ceased production (ragtop). Some modifications to the 360 line and Rabbit scooter line until 1968; 450cc engine available on 360 1968: FF1 sedan introduced in Asia, Australia, NZ 1969: 360 introduced to the US; FF1 wagon and 4-door sedan (previously 2-door only) introduced 1970: FF1 range arrives Stateside 1971: FF1 available with 100cc-larger 1100 engine. FF1 also first Subaru to use "Quadrizontal" horizontally opposed engine. 1972: Rex replaces 360; Leone begins to supersede FF1. FF1 still has 1000cc and 1100cc engine options. Leone available with 1100cc engine in Asia; only 1300cc engine available in States. Body styles include 2- and 4- door sedans, coupe, and wagon. All Subaru station wagons to date including Sambar van and 360 custom have had a split tailgate. Sambar now based on Rex platform. 1973: Leone engine displacement in US grows to 1400cc. Last year for choke on dashboard, first year for emissions equipment. 4-speed manual is the only transmission offered. AM radio optional on most models. Then as now, Subaru's primary supplier is Clarion. Last year for "solid" vinyl upholstery on non-coupe models (later years have basketweave) and split tailgate station wagons. Rex continues in Japan and is introduced in European markets. Subaru never offers another microcar in the States. 1974: No major changes from '73 apart from colors, midyear introduction of performance Leone with dual carburetors and midyear change to single-port exhaust. Head gaskets strengthened. 1975: First model year for 4WD wagons and all that they entailed. No more cowcatcher bumpers on these models as they are classified as light trucks/utility vans. Air conditioning is now available from the factory as well as dealers; numerous aftermarket suppliers now making appearance and performance accessories; popular dealer add-ons include vent louvers for rear windows on Coupes; aftermarket cassette and 8-Trak players; and wooden shifter knobs. 1976: Subaru's first Ski Wagons debut; 1600cc EA71 engine debuts at the end of the year. Stage II dash introduced. Cloth seats an option for the first time. 1977: More options become popular. 1400cc engine phased out. 1978: First year for the BRAT. By now Subaru is the best-selling import station wagon in the US. 1979: Last year for Gen 1 wagons, sedans and coupes. FFE is the most economical Subie. GF hardtop will be phased out and not replaced until 1982 when GLF coupe/hardtop is finally equipped with comparable equipment. Finally automatic transmissions (introduced in 1975) account for more than 25% of Subaru sales. 1980: New 1800cc engine available only with automatic. Coupe, 2- and 4-door sedans, hardtop, hatchback and wagon body styles offered. New US Ski Team Wagon debuts. Automatic transmission upgraded to handle power from 1800cc engine; will be offered with 4WD within a year on foreign markets (1983 in US). Most Subies are now being sold with cloth upholstery; power steering is now available; and most manual transmission wagons are 4WDs. This brings you up into what's already available in the Gallery and at http://www.fhi.co.jp and http://www.subaru-global.co.jp . Good luck with your project!! (this is as accurate as I can make it based upon my recollections, experience, and stacks of old owners' manuals/dealer lit. Corrections welcomed.)
  12. I would say go with the Loyale, although I prefer manuals, the Loyale is going to be easier to drive (more power unless the '88 is also a turbo, and the tranny should be a 4spd on post-'88 turbos). also, the engine on my mom's '89 GL-10 FT4WD Turbo AT was only spinning at 2500rpm at 70ish, as opposed to 3.5K+ on her '92 Loyale SPFI 3AT...a manual with either engine should split the difference.
  13. In addition to the hole you're going to have to cut, I believe you'll have to install a completely different wiring harness and a new dome light/control pod assembly...as well as a new headliner from the parts car...the sun shade, the tracks, a roof rack is NOT a good idea... It would be easier to find a GL-10 with a blown engine/tranny and transplant what you want into it, as opposed to trying to move the sunroof and destroying your roof in the process. That's not something I'd be willing to let a dealer risk, even.
  14. A little Tiger Hair on that top and you'll be golden. Just don't ever try to take it out. I just bought my 4th 360 sedan (second driver) a month ago from Jon. Awesome cars...
  15. Hey--I'm in East Windsor, I do believe I have the only '73 Split Gate wagon in the area. Where in Enfield are you? (Sorry, it's not for sale, but there's a thread somewhere on this forum about it, with pics.)
  16. You've been saying that for three years now...and when you don't hear from me for a couple days you say I've pulled a Houdini Speaking of which--what's going on in PA??? I need to know what's going on with you. Shoot me an email. I can do Friday PM or Saturday morning, let me know soon.
  17. I averaged 34-36mpg from Albany to (almost) Pittsburgh when I dropped off Skip's '78. (What a drive...that was 530 miles of nonstop Interstate and secondary roads, more construction than I've ever seen in my life...) If I were you I'd grab it, and keep it this time. (Or pawn it off to me in a year or so...)
  18. no, the Subie 4-cyls aren't bad at all weight-wise (but then, pretty much everyone in the Northeast Corridor has helped moosens pull one out of something at one point or another...) XT6 engines are pretty heavy though. And...mud in the bellhousing is not good. Not good at all. Are you worried about it getting in there or was it already there when you started disassembly...?
  19. Nokias or Hakkapeliittas, 185 wide, would be my recommendation. If you're looking for something cheap, I just put a set of 155 series no-name 13"s on my Justy for $114.14--all four tires plus the spare.
  20. What he said!! I wonder what a shipping quote would be to 06607?
  21. Unfortunately he did, they're not worth too much. I have an '89 touring wagon in fire-engine red (also from NH) as well as Paul's maroon doors. Also--touring wagons were not available with a power sunroof (for obvious reasons--there'd be a net loss in rear headroom even with the raised roof) but I've seen one with a dealer-installed flip-up.
  22. Can you please find out about buying the car, even without the VIN tags, as one big "part"? All I need is a receipt from the yard with the VIN# on it to register it in Connecticut (this is if Jon isn't going after it). Thanks! Andrew aparker4.mac.com@earthlink.net 413 222 2428
  23. Mud?? More like quicksand... I'll bring the van and trailer if we go to the one with the FF1
  24. Gee, I think I know where some of those EA81s went Paul, you're welcome to any parts you may need, and if emissions doesn't pan out, trade me for Connie's and put a balljoint/CV axle in mine. It went through emissions just fine, still runs great, working air, too.
