  1. Just a quick note on that tach...if you do install it and it reads well into the 4 grand range in 4th during freeway cruising---remove the tach or stick to backroads. Knowing how fast my engine was going all the way from Atlanta to Hartford, CT would have scared the living daylights out of me, that's why I'll never have one.
  2. Hey, send a PM to subGSR, he's down on the South Island as well but usually only posts in the Historic Subaru forum. Wish I was back in NZ... Andrew
  3. Yup, Matt told me about this a month ago but I almost never use my private messages and I missed it...hope you guys all have fun, as of right now I'm working Maybe next time. Good luck with Bucky!
  4. Nice ride--but don't unload the split gate, they're priceless. (Unless you sell it to me--then I'll have 2 of a kind!)
  5. I didn't say anything about it because I didn't know anything about it until Frank emailed me and told me it didn't go. When I found out it was less drivable than it was when it first became undrivable as I was driving it (give me a break, 12 hour night shifts) I let you know. And I answered my phone on the second ring today. See you tomorrow morning. (here's what I have: 3dr GL, 74K, Maine car, pretty badly rotted My mom's old Loyale, odometer rollback victim, around 300K '89 Touring wagon, hit front end, dunno if there's anything good on it '87 turbo wagon(s), both GL10s, would like to keep the tan one in one piece for now '87ish carbed d/r wagon, that's going to be the donor for the 3dr I have to get inspected Take whatever you want after the threedoor is running well. I'm thinking probably a straight tranny and diff swap. The engine is not original (MPFI nonturbo from an XT, in an RX shell), tranny is FT4WD d/r with electric locking center diff. No idea if it has turbo axles or SPFI so they might have to be swapped too, steering is loose and not within MA spec, exhaust needs patching and might need WBs. Looking like a full day.
  6. It was indeed Naftzinger's Whatever we do in Scranton I'm sure Frank would appreciate it if it was soon The turbo wagon appears to be totally dead, I left a key with Frank and when he tried to move it, it appeared to have developed some electrical issues And Dave, if you ever do need/want to call me, take my number, I hear it works better that way:brow: 413 222 2428 cell
  7. The other ones are Daihatsus. Subaru, Suzuki, Daihatsu and Mitsubishi all market identical-looking mminitrucks for third-world countries and places where road real estate is a problem. They're very popular in Japan, in farming areas; I'll post pictures later if anyone's interested.
  8. Wasn't me either, I was down there but I only went as far as Roanoke and I had an '89 turbo GL-10, Lucent Grey, and an '87 turbo GL-10, sandstone. Nothing that old here.
  9. I'd say that's about right. I paid a little over 2500 for my '73 wagon, in almost-as-nice shape (if this was the one on eBay).
  10. I think the price is absurd considering they start at 8500US brand new at your local Tokyo dealership. They top out around fifteen. And this one is eleven years old.
  11. I recall reading about an expatriate Australian auto writer living in New Zealand that has an FF1. The 3 in the South were in Alabama. The guy's old user name was fourguzzis . A motor home junkyard in Indiana also had one for sale for a while but they'd crushed it 2 days before I called them
  12. Personally I think the styling looks great, only not on that car...The R1 and R2 look awesome with that front end, but they're minicars. Also, the Tribeca is only planned for North American markets. If it lasts 'til '08 I'll be surprised.
  13. They absolutely do not run leaded gas in Japan, I asked a Soobie dealer here after I read this. It's not available for sale here at all at the pump. ANY pump.
  14. 360 and Sambar engines through '70 were code EK32 (not 23) air cooled 358cc jobs. This looks like it came out of a mid-'80s Sambar (still in production here in Japan) when the displacement was still under 600cc. They're now 660ccs.
  15. I am very happy with my collection of little flimsy Japanese tin cans that rattle, make funny noises, don't always make freeway merging fun, always get me where I'm going comfortably, always start the first or second time, always go unnoticed by car thieves in mall parking lots, and always drive like mountain goats in the snow. Subarus used to be cheap little cars that did everything you asked of them, and then some, if you didn't mind a couple of rough edges. Reliability has gone downhill slightly since then, but there are no longer any rough edges and you still can't beat one in the snow (Haaglund drivers don't count). :-)
  16. Thanks for everyone who replied. I drove out with my friend's mom and we made the whole trip in a little under 34 hours. I'll be flying out of Cheyenne tomorrow but I should be back in the next 6 months or so.
  17. It might be a salesman at a dealer, but Joe Spitz is the most no-BS Soobie salesman I've ever had the pleasure to deal with. (Obviously I didn't buy from him, but drop him an email and let him know you're in the market and he'll probably give you a hand.)
  18. I'm driving my XT6 to Cheyenne from Hartford, Conn the 2nd of July. Anyone want to meet up for whatever meal happens to be in season, coffee, whatever? (I'm dropping the car off for a friend at a military installation there.) Emergency contacts would also be helpful and appreciated but the car is rock-solid reliable, I'm not as worried as I was about the '73 I brought home from Atlanta. Hope to see some of you guys on the way. Andrew aparker4.mac.com@earthlink.net 413-222-2428
  19. All I need is a shifter knob. Trudy, I admire your optimistic outlook.
  20. Can you throw in a ball joint, CV axle, brake rotors, tie rod ends, LF fender, rear bumper, AC kit, and belts for that sweet '84 wagon you sold me too? Or how about one dinner for you & your wife someplace nice will cover it..
  21. Why not just find an MPFI car and drop a d/r tranny in it like Dennis did with his XT? I don't know if I'd take a turbo offroad though. If you're interested I have an MPFI nonturbo RX 3-door with a d/r FT4WD tranny, locking diff, rear LSD
  22. Those are all great Subies.Paul's already posted photos of my '73 so I won't repeat them here. I also have a '75 wagon in the same color as subGSR's and a couple of 360s. subGSR, would you happen to have any hubcaps in the same pattern as your daughter's sedan? I only need one...
  23. A föm pillow (the polystyrene filled squishy ones) at Brookstone (or cheaper at BJ's) is pretty decent. But in your case it's very easy to swap the seat out for a GL-10 seat (or the whole interior if you want them to match), or an XT/XT6 front seat set. (Personally, though, this might not help as I've always thought Loyale seats were pretty comfy. Also Loyale, XT and GL-10 seats, while padded differently, are shaped similarly.)
  24. Inflation is the biggest determinant of mileage as far as tires go. Are you running rich/is the timing set properly? 21mpg seems awfully low even for the slushbox. My mom got between 26-30 (mostly highway) in hers.
  25. I'm 5 years and 500 miles further along than your young whippersnapper
