  1. GeneralDisorder, you have a PM--I NEED body parts off that car if they're rust-free and not too badly dinged.
  2. I'm in for 2006. Seriously, if anyone else can do it...it's never too early to start planning. I'd love to go back.
  3. the only carbed gl-10s were in '85 and '86. There were also a couple of hundred MPFI non-turbo GLs and GL10s sold in '85, there was one in the Marketplace with the red interior package about a year ago (TROGDOR! had it). But '87 and later were all either SPFI or MPFI turbos. 135K is right where a t-belt should start giving you problems--it's 15K overdue for a swap. (Or 75K if it's never been done before.) But it could also be fuel pressure, air filter, a vacuum line, the auto tranny (if so ill-equipped), the clutch...Start with the simple stuff first (t-belts and a tuneup, it probably needs it anyway) and go from there.
  4. I'm in, if you let me drive your "family truck". The Beetle probably wouldn't do to well on the trails...but if you're seriously willing I'll shell out for gas/tolls for both of us. And lunch. I seem to owe you an awful lot of them
  5. Kevin, in a year or so I'd love to take you up on your offer...I'm sure Paul (moosens) and I could split tour-guide duties and accomodations if you ever came out this way. I'm in the northern part of Conn, about 120km north of him. You have a PM with my contact info.
  6. I'm envious of NZ/AU Soob owners--they've got more than 8% of the market where you guys are (compared to a little under 1% here) and the older ones don't rot out. I just got back from 3 weeks on the East Coast of Oz and the South Island, and you guys don't know how good you have it. Btw, there's a 1400 DL coupe, RHD, for sale in Oz for $AU400. If you're interested, I believe it's in the Brisbane area, needs a ring job but the advert says it's in great shape. I'll grab the phone number for you if you'd like. (It certainly would be less to ship from the US or Japan, and it is a '74 model.) Yes, I spent my vacation drooling over Aussie/NZ Soobs. I can't help myself.
  7. "Bitchin!!!!!!! Might inspire our local GLF abuser to do the same.Mighty nice job you have going.Looking forward to seeing the final product." No way, Paul. Mine is staying bone stock, right down to the auto tranny. Your in-law's, though... Nice job, I wonder if you could fit an XT interior into that eventually? The hood scoop is definitely a standout too.
  8. MeatWagon: All turbo-equipped EA81 cars were automatics. (Not all were GL-10s though, and several people have put manuals in them.) ashesh: If it's rusted, and you live in a coastal area or someplace where they salt the roads, and you absolutely love the car--bolt on new fenders on the front, and have a shop weld on new rear quarters. Have them take care of the undercarriage at the same time, and have it undercoated. Wash and wax often and don't park it on dirt. If it's just a beater, though, don't even bother with the Bondo, just run it into the ground and get an Impreza or second-generation Legacy when it dies. Just my .02
  9. Not to hijack...but...how was camping? How's your wife doing, is she OK? And congrats to your son.
  10. Gen II/EA82 people might not need it now...but in ten years we'll all be in the same boat. If we start on this now and keep it current it'll be worth its weight in gold. The 360 club did the same thing, by the way (on paper only, though)--all the brake and roof gasket retrofits are in the Book of Reprints. It's truly invaluable.
  11. I fit three in the back of my Forester on several occasions (carting around my cousins' kids), so I'd have to assume yes. The OB is wider than the Forester, but definitely try the seats out first at the dealer--the Legacy platform has lower, more contoured seats than the Forester.
  12. All GL-10s 1987 and later had sunroofs and air standard (not sure about earlier models). They also all had digidashes standard from 1985 on. '83 and '84 models got digidashes as a no-cost option but they could be deleted--I've seen a couple EA81 GL-10s without them. 1989 models also had rear limited slip differentials standard, and they all had upgraded interiors. '87 through '89 had seat-height adjusters, adjustable headrests that went fore and aft in addition to up and down, and rear head restraints on velour lowback seats. '85/6 models had pretty much the same interiors but the seats looked more like the early-'80s GL seats. '83-4 models had standard GL interiors with lumbar support, carpet inserts on the door panels, rear fold-out armrests (sedans and coupes only) and map pockets on the back seats. On later models there was no vinyl on the seat at all (even the backs) on GL10s; GLs had vinyl back inserts, and DLs had cloth on the seat's front surfaces and vinyl everywhere else. DLs also had harder-wearing (and harder to clean) loop carpeting instead of the cut-pile used in the GL/10 models. There are other differences, but they're even more minor (like the blackout trim package on the turbo 4WD models that was standard on the GL10 but optional on all models of the GL, and the body-color and chrome side mouldings standard on the GL10).
  13. Looks like fun--with any luck I'll be there next year with Paul's old '75. It's good to hear everyone had a good time, and heartening to see so many babied Soobs. The '78 takes the cake, though--it's a blast to drive too.
  14. Give me a date. I'm free from now until the beginning of July, just about...there's nothing I *need* except a new bumper, for the one my mom squished...I'm still interested in that 3-door, the Beetle is truly awful in bad weather (and we've only had rain/mud so far)...and I'm more than willing to store parts for you, you know that.
  15. WJM, if you don't have a good hood now (if you were going to the yard for one), I've got one here in light blue from the blue GL that Moosens just parted. Shipping might be steep though. It's got a couple nicks on the front, other than that it's solid. No major dents or rust spots larger than a pinhead.
  16. That's Barbara Boxer (the other one is Diane Feinstein) and if you hadn't noticed the New England states are well on their way to adopting Cal-spec emissions. CT included, if they can come up with some decent test stations and incorruptible inspectors.
  17. Any time, glad you liked the Beetle, sorry we both showed up for a Soob meet in German cars, and for the edification of everyone else on the board: the '83 coupe is now mine, pending transportation Monday morning. Vultures, keep your maws off this one!
  18. I just reread Snowman's post...unless it's been removed there is a rear LSD. They were standard on '89 GL-10s.
  19. The 4EAT was an option on 89 GL and GL-10 touring wagons, according to Edmunds. (But who knows how reliable they are?) XT GL models'88 and later also had the 4EAT with a naturally-aspirated engine.
  20. The Justy only came with the inline 3. One of 2 inline Subaru engines to hit our shores...so I guess compared to the Justy and the 360 we do have high end engines. Still, this one was nothing compared to the Brat listed a while back with the V6 and the 5-speed 4WD automatic.
  21. If it's in running order and the rust is superficial, and it's on a southern used car lot, 1500-2500 would be my guess. That's a rare car anywhere, and if you got it with that kind of mileage (and it's been well-maintained) I don't think you'd be disappointed.
  22. cc me if you shoot the other people in your addy book an email. I'm game as long as I don't have school.
  23. Paul, I'm game for next weekend. Please, PLEASE give me a call and let me know what's going on??? Thanks
  24. Calebz, I'm thinking Turbo Traction because the RXes had badging...also the title would read "RX" on an RX, whereas "Turbo Traction" wouldn't fit. It could've been modded, unless he has the whole history (and if he had the whole history he'd probably know what kind of car he's driving). You're right in that the VIN is the only way to know for sure.
  25. Plugging asterisks (*) in on both sides of a too-short word also eliminates the length constraints (for other boards' search features this is very helpful, it's less useful here). Your best bet is probably the EJ drivetrain...much better reliability with the old-school looks (as well as the old-school limiting factors, like suspension/tires/interior...) Calebz, there are no Subarus that old in the US. The oldest registered with the 360 Club is a '58;)
