  1. Which is why you slam your foot down on the clutch when you let up on the gas (and a darn good reason for not having to push in the selector button on auto trannies when shifting to neural from drive). Edit: Er, neutral. I think I changed it before the grammar gremlins caught me...
  2. I did, I think I'm going to put a set of 155/70s on my GL-10 next winter. And did they make a Loyale Touring wagon in '92? I thought '90 was the only year for the Loyale Touring.
  3. Try cross-posting this thread to the new-gen forum, more people over there have had experience with Legacy tires in the snow.
  4. I didn't even look this week and I'm getting really sick of pushing my radio buttons with a spare key...if you still have your old one, would you be willing to strike a deal for buttons? Please PM me. Thanks, Andrew And congrats on your find!
  5. Gen-1 Soobs (for the generally accepted Gen 1 body style) go back to 1972 for the GSR coupe and 1973 for the other models. Subaru The EA63 (1.4L) and EA71 (1.6L) were used in most of these cars. Previous models were the FF-1, FFE, and Star, from 1970 to 1972 though the FFE label I believe (ask Bajavwnsoobnut) was used later on. Their engine displacements were 1000cc, 1100cc, and 1300cc, depending on year and trim. Moosens has the engine codes. I think I do too, I'll look them out for you if you're interested. The EA71 engine was used in Gen 1 cars and Gen 2 vehicles until the last hatch in the States was sold, in 1989. The first EA71s appeared in the MY75 4WD wagons. The EA81 was used in Gen 2 cars except hatches (in which the EA71 was used exclusively). The EA82 engine, and turbo wariants, were used in "Gen 3" cars: 1985-89 DL wagon/sedan/3-door coupe 1985-89 GL (same styles) 1985-89 GL-10 (sedan/wagon only) 1985 Turbo Traction (same as GL-10) 1990-94 Loyale sedan/wagon 1990-92? Loyale 3-door coupe 1988-89 RS 3-door coupe 1985-89.5 RX 3-door and sedan, both body styles were not available every year All XTs with 4-cylinder engines 1985 on (I don't know what year theydropped the Four). The Justy used the "EJ12", a 1.2L 3-cylinder, the first US-market Subaru engine that wasn't horizontally opposed since the EK32 (2-cylinder 2-stroke 360cc) used in the 360 and Sambar lines (from 1958-1970; imported '68-'70). The XT6 used the ER27, a horizontally-opposed variant of the EA82 4-cyl with 6 cylinders and 150% of the displacement. I hope this helps, Andrew
  6. Put in GL-10 or XT6 seats, cut the brackets and that wayyou'll be able to raise the seat back to "normal" for other drivers, with minimal fuss.
  7. No snow here yet, just rain :-( We've had a couple of dustings but nothing major. Moosens hasn't had anything yet (he's on the coast) but northern VT/NH has had almost 2 feet, 18 inches of it just last week.
  8. Get her a 2.2L Impreza wagon and yourself a newer Loyale ('93-'94). OR, let her drive your car for a little bit--she'll either love it or hate it. (Hopefully she'll love it!) Unless she has to drive it on a regular basis, though, it really shouldn't be a concern as long as it's cheap and it doesn't detract from your marriage. (No piles of Soob stuff all over the place, half-parted cars in the driveway, hours at a time spent on the board and days under the hood...my God, now I know why my mother hates mine
  9. You want to put the Loyale seat in the GL, or vice versa? I believe all EA82 seats are interchangeable. You only have to modify EA81 to fit EA82 and vice versa, and you can't use wagon/sedan seats in a hatch/3-door without losing the ablity to slide the seat forward (and get out of the back, unless you weigh less than 80 pounds and/or know yoga...but that's your passengers' problem )
  10. What does Hyundai make that goes 95 MPH and gets 40 MPG? After reading the suggestions I'd go with the XT6 with the 4EAT, or a turbo Legacy. I'm very happy with my XT4, but for that kind of driving you probably need more oomph. And my Forester pulls just over 4K RPM at that speed, with the manual.
  11. Sorry about that, my email address is aparker@aparker.asnuntuck.org . If that doesn't work I can also be reached at aparker4 dot mac dot com at earthlink dot net . (the school server is flaky.) Thanks, Andrew
  12. It's a wagon, your wife will approve. Family weekend sounds good. Just follow me on the way back to make sure it doesn't fall off the trailer.
  13. If I had to guess I'd say the heater fan issue is the blower motor speed control unit. Usually at least one speed is gone. The wiper motors also tend to stick if they''ve been sitting for a while, try nudging the wipers while they're turned on. Sorry I can't help with the highbeams. Good luck, Andrew (I'm assuming this is a Loyale wagon?)
  14. Please run JF1AX4328JC316174 , '88 XT4 and JF2AN55B0HD481273 , '87 GL-10 turbowagon Thanks, Andrew
  15. How old were they, '80s, '70s, or '60s? Any FF-1s? Gen1 wagons?
  16. Isn't someone on here running a 160ºF? Corky, maybe? My mom is having the same problem on her GLF, but in her case only the pass defroster is coming on.
  17. EA82s are a little long in the tooth from a reliability standpoint, I'll go along with the Legacy and furthermore recommend a 2.2 turbo wagon...or an XT6 4WD. The XT has a little bit more ground clearance, but the air struts might be a pain. And the Legacies are less-prone to rot. (Trust me, sometimes I think they salt the roads out here in the summer.)
  18. Spring road trip? I just need to get a Uhaul trailer hitch
  19. Methinks Mick knoweth not the power of determination, grit, Bondo and a MIG welder. C'mon, it's a split-gate wagon--if there's anything more worthy of a done-right restoration, I don't know what it is (besides an FF-1). Let's find out how much he wants and pool our resources. My Forester is rated to tow 2200 pounds, I'm pretty sure we could squeak by that a little bit and still be safe...what say you?
  20. I'll find you a tranny if necessary--you would have killed me if I told you what Mom did to the '75 on her latest (and last) attempt to drive a stick (no harm done, but it took a little while and a lot of elbow grease to get the paint back to yellow from chlorophyll-colored). :-\ As for said '75 returning to your possession--I'll leave it to your son in my will:-)
  21. I'm also replying: Sorry it took me 56 months to pay up for the '75, and please don't forget the 3-door that's currently waiting for a tranny, I'd like to see my mom in a 4WD before snow flies. She was going to try limping the GLF with the CV joint that's in it, but that will only be an option for another couple weeks or so. Thanks, Andrew Edit: For those of you who are also laughing, I meant 6 months, NOT 56.
  22. If you need a place to store it til you get a house... =) Too bad about the other ones. Did you get the phone numbers of the other guys?
  23. Paul, Brian, according to my FSM the '73 wagons were all split-gate. Looks like the Holy Grail of the FSCR is in Iowa. Let me clarify my earler post: Are the other Subarus still available, not the other old cars.
  24. Again----did any of the Soobs sell??? Are any still available? Paul--road trip?? If they're still there I want the yellow wagon, the green wagon and a coupe. Why not live a little before Mom & Dad kill me? I wish I lived closer.
  25. I've used the spare tire bracket, it's nice and handy and you can wrap your ground wire around it and wrap it in PVC tape (in case you need to remove the support for more engine room). Check the alt, too, just for laughs, and the alt ground and belts. The ONLY other similar problem I've seen where the alt wasn't the culprit is on my dad's D/R wagon. When you hit the brake the 4WD HI light comes on. But that has other electrical gremlins.
