I'm not sure if any of them are VLSD or not, which gearboxes had VLSD, the RX gearbox I took the locking centre diff off had an open centre diff. This is probably a one off offer as I took a look around the wrecking yard and found about 8 - 10 Legacy EJ Hi/Lo gearboxes, but not all of them had a locking centre diff and some of the ones with locking centre diff have had the vacuum shifting mechanism removed. I found about 4 EA82's with locking centre diff's so could if needed convert 4 legacy gearboxes that dont have locking centre diff. Since I only found 8-10 gearboxes I did some phoning round a few other wreckers and the cheapest I can find these gearboxes elsewhere is NZ$600 including GST and probably another $50 freight to get each gearbox to me. When I find out the final shipping costs and find out the cost of transfering the funds to NZ I will post a final price per gearbox landed in Seattle WA. Ian

Lol........that's right most don't know what 1m3 would stand for it's 1 cubic meter, so it would measure 1 meter by 1 meter by 1 meter...cheers Ian

Well I have the EJ/RX gearbox in place, I modified and used the EA82 gearbox crossmember, used a EA82 gear linkage, modified slightly and a lengthened driveshaft. I will take some photos and post.. With all this bolted in place I find the swaybar will not fit, the loop that goes over the exhaust now wants to occupy the same place as the rear of the gearbox....:-\ What have people done to overcome this problem??? All my suspension is original Brumby.......Ian

I have had a clarification on the shipping, the quote will be for 1m3 or 1000kg. So if the box measures 1m3 and weighs 1000kg or less it will be the quoted price, if the box measure 1m3 and weighs 1500kg the price for shipping will be for 1500kg, if the box measures 1.5m3 and weighs 1000kg the price for shipping will be for 1.5m3. I am not sure how many gearboxes I will be able to get into a 1m3 box but think it will probably weigh less than 1000kg. Subarutex I am able to get some linkage and interior bits but it would come down to what is available. As for condition unless I opened them up I am unable to guarantee them but I will make sure that they select all gears and they don't feel all notchy when turning the shafts. As I put in a previous post I am not charging for my time and just want to recover ALL the costs so that when the deal is completed it hasn't cost me any money...just my time which I am donating free of charge. If people want gearboxes opened up and inspected then I will charge for that. I may have room to include a few smaller items in with the gearboxes...like linkages etc. Ian

I have phoned all the International exporters in Dunedin and they all ship into L.A, no one that I can find ships into Seattle, although one said he possibly could but you would have to pay for a whole container. And honestly I'm not sure I can find that many gearboxes. So shipping would be into LA then by truck from there. I am still waiting for the quote to ship to your address....Cheers Ian

I have had a reply about freight, but since I have an address to ship them too in Seattle WA I have asked for a firm quote. So far the price I have been quoted for 1M3 or 1000kg landed in LA but no destination charges. In other words no US taxes, duties or any other charges. It works out at NZ$428.34, the quote doesn't say if GST (local tax) has to be added or if it is exempt. This was also calculated at the current exchange rate and a note says that approximate destination charges would be US$400. Additional to this would be the cost of shipping from LA to Seattle WA. I am still waiting for a couple of questions to be answered but it looks like it could be an additional US$100 maybe more per gearbox if I send 10 gearboxes. So around US$300 per gearbox, but I will have a more precise figure when the quote comes back. So is this acceptable to those that are interested?? ...Ian

Thanks everyone for the interest, PM's have been replied too. I have been told that freight is by the cubic meter or the 1000kg so have asked for a quote for 1000kg. I will check if they land freight in Seattle Wa but I think the container would be landed in LA and it would be freighted by truck from there. The gearboxes I have looked at come out of the 1800 Legacy with Hi/Lo and the vacuum unit for center diff lock, not all the 1800's with Hi/Lo ratio have the center diff lock and not all the ones I have seen with center diff lock have Hi/Lo ratio. I have no idea of gearbox or diff ratios, but I know my '83 Brumby had 3.7 diff ratio, and the Hi/Lo Legacy box I fitted the RX centre diff too was also 3.7 diff ratio......so the ratio's may be quite different to what was available in the US of A. At present I do get a few parts out of the US, along with tooling and other things and know a freight company that ships this stuff to me at reasonable rates.........I could be looking for some Mustang parts in the future. I will keep pursuing the freight costs and let everyone know as things develop.....Cheers Ian

For those that don't know me, LPGsuperchargedBrumby visited me at work recently, so those that know Callum can verify this with him. I run a business in Dunedin, NZ, a transmission repair shop, I have worked at this company for over 10 years and have owned it for the last 6. I have an Ebay account using the same name as I log in here with, so go and check my feedback. I have purchased from quite a few businesses in the US and have some very good friends in the US. Most of my friends are into a certain form of target shooting, which is my main interest. I have represented NZ at a world level in target shooting and this is where most of my references would be in the US. As I put in my original post I can accept payment to a US address, in fact a friend of mine who lives in Indiana, and for those that don't trust me then I can make it simple. Send payment to my friend in the US, with all your details and including freight (still to be finalised) I would ship the gearboxes to him and he would then arrange internal shipping of the gearboxes at the purchasers expense. The only problem with this is that those on the west coast would pay a bit more in freight than if I could find someone on the west coast to ship them to and trust to arrange shipping them to all the buyers. For those that want references, what do you want??

Right, following a few requests for a Legacy gearbox with Hi/Lo and diff lock I have made a few enquiries about the cost of shipping some to the USA. The shipping would be by sea and they would land in L.A but at this stage I am still waiting on costs. I would need an address to send them to in the US and then they would have to be distributed to the purchasers. What I am proposing is that I will purchase as many gearboxes as people order and pay for, build a crate and package them. Then arrange to ship them to the US. I don't need paid for the box or my time, all I need is to cover the purchase cost of the gearboxes and any shipping costs. If you are interested then please PM me so I can get an idea of how many gearboxes I would need to source. The cost of the gearboxes is NZ$300 each, if I am buying 5 or more plus the cost of shipping. I can accept payment to a US address, but the cost of transfering the funds to me in New Zealand would have to be added. So let me know if you are interested.

There are a few EA81's lying around but no I haven't seen any twin carb motors, can't say I have seen any here in NZ.
-
Looks like a few in the US are interested in these gearboxes, shipping will be the real expensive part probably. I will see what I can find out on shipping. The gearbox I made up for my Brumby was a late model Hi/Lo as it had a syncro for reverse, but I had to remove the syncro setup as the RX centre diff housing didn't have the locating holder for it.

The actual problem with the '99 and '00 legacy is that the seals on low clutch had a design fault that eventually caused the fluid to leak past the low clutch seals.......here in NZ a few of these, well actually '98 and '99 were the only ones that had the problem here, Subaru fixed a few with this problem under warranty. What happens when you put the "fix in a bottle" in is it swells the seals and turns them slightly jelly like.........which prevents the seals from leaking therefore temporarily fixing the problem. But it doesn't only swell the leaking seals it swells ALL the rubber components in the trans........not good when you know how a transmission works and see what happens as a result of the "fix in a can" I have rebuilt a few of these trans for this problem and usually a seal kit fixes the problem as all the plates are usually still in like new condition.

While searching for some parts for my swap, a EJ22 into a Brumby ute, at the local Subaru wreckers I came across a 1800 Legacy wagon, first registered in NZ in 1992. The thing that made this Legacy stand out is that it had a 4wd gearbox that had Hi/Lo ratio and centre diff lock. The centre diff lock button was set into the gear shift knob. (wish I had known that before building my gearbox) One other gearbox I found, still attached to a EJ18 was a 4wd gearbox with centre diff lock but no Hi/Lo ratio. Were these gearboxes available elsewhere in the world?? If not I'm pretty sure I can start exporting them

Obviously Fuji did do something different for NZ as the 23 spline and 25 spline diffs are different and are not interchangeable. The 25 spline diff's have larger bearings than the 23 spline. I have some 23 spline stubs but can't fit them in the 25 spline EJ D/R gearbox as it has a 25 spline diff. I will try and get some photo's and post them.
-
Ah now this makes sense, down here in NZ the diff's aren't interchangeable, well none that I have found. The 23 spline diff has a bearing that is about 10mm smaller in diameter than the 25 spline diff so you can't change the diff. All the EA non turbo boxes are 23 spline while the Turbo EA didn''t come to NZ that I have seen. All the L series non turbo that I have seen were 23 spline and the Turbo were 25 spline. While the Legacy and Impreza 2wd were 23 spline all the 4wd were 25 spline. The 23 spline stubs have 23 splines on the inner and outer end, and the 25 spline have 25 spline on the inner and outer end. So trying to fit a set of 23 spline stubs into a 25 spline diff is like fitting a 25 spline DOJ onto a 23 spline shaft.

Mostly correct as the signals that are fed direct into the trans ECU are TPS, front and rear speed sensor, Inhibitor switch, Engine ECU signals, FWD switch (fuse), Brake switch, and AT hold from what I recall. Outputs from the trans ECU are trans temp, power, Manual, FWD lights, pressure, TC lock up, over run, 2x shift, and transfer clutch solenoids, and Check connector. So when you look at all this it would be easy to fit an auto and also fit the trans ECU with wiring the only thing to figure out is what the signal from the engine ECU to the trans ECU is, possibly rpm only way to find out is monitor the signal and see what it corresponds too. The easiest way to do it would be to get the wiring harnes, trans ECU and other related components from a doner vehicle. A trans would be easy I have about 30, some are none turbo, others are single turbo, some twin turbo, and a couple of two wheel drive. Turbo trans are usually 4.111 ratio. The none turbo and single turbo disengage the transfer clutch when the FWD sw (fuse) is installed while the twin turbo lock up the transfer clutch when the switch (fuse) is installed.

Gloyale, I don't know if it is just what is available in New Zealand but all the 23 spline stubs I find have 23 splines on the inner end as well as the outer, so will not fit in the Legacy 25 spline diff carrier. Also all the 23 spline gearboxes either EA81, L series, Legacy or Impreza have smaller bearings on the diff carrier than the 25 spline diff carrier so it won't fit either. How many splines are on the inside end of the Legacy dual range gearbox stub axles and how many are on the inside of your 23 spline stub axles?? My gearbox is back together and now lodged in the trans tunnel on the Brumby, but I would love to know what the stub axles you are talking about come out of cause I certainly cant find any 23 splines stub axles with 25 splines on the inside where they fit in the spider gears.

GeneralDisorder has it correct All I did was remove the boot on the Legacy and Brumby inner DOJ's then removed the wire clip so I was able to remove the outer cups. Then fit the outer cup from the Legacy 1/2 shaft onto the 83 Brumby 1/2 shaft refit the wire clip and the boot. Fit the 1/2 shaft back on the Brumby.
-
The problem is that I couldn't find any 23 spline stubs that would fit into the Legacy diff carrier. All the EA82 gearboxes I looked at were 25 spline unless they were 2wd which were 23 spline. All the 23 spline stub axles I found were 23 splines on the inner end and the diff carrier bearings were quite a bit smaller than the Legacy 4wd diff carrier, so you couldn't just change the carrier either.

This seems to be a common problem when doing gearbox swaps. Since I'm putting a EJ22 and Legacy D/R hybrid FT4WD gearbox into my Brumby (Brat) I had the problem of tyring to refit the front axles, here is the solution I found. I wanted to use parts that were easily obtainable, therefore easy to replace, with no machining. Taking the Brumby 1/2 shaft I removed the outer cup from the inner DOJ, this cup has 23 splines to fit the early gearbox. Then taking a Legacy 1/2 shaft with the 25 spline inner DOJ I removed the outer cup from the DOJ. I then put the outer cup from the Legacy DOJ onto the inner part of the Brumby DOJ. Now I have a 1/2 shaft that will fit the Brumby hub and fit the Legacy 25 spline gearbox stub axle. You could also put the Brumby outer DOJ cup onto the Legacy inner part of the DOJ and therefore end up with a 23 spline inner DOJ that will fit the Legacy 11/2 shaft. I haven't looked to see if this could be done on a outer CV but it may be able to be done. Hope this helps somebody looking at doing a swap.

LPGsuperchargedBrumby I have sent you a PM, it would be good to see yours when you are in Dunedin next. For the gearbox crossmember I am either going to alter the existing one or fabricate one to use either the EA82 mounts or maybe a set of Legacy mounts. How did you get around the front inner cv joint? I couldn't find any 23 spline stub axles to fit the Legacy diff carrier, but when I was looking at the 23 spline CV joint and the Legacy 25 spline joint they both looked about the same size. What I found was the outer cup of the Legacy joint fitted on the inner part of the EA81 23 spline joint. Axle problem solved.......I think........I will know for sure when it drives. I think I have found a power steering rack at a reasonable price, I tried a place in Auckland they could supply one rebuilt for $750 +GST I told them where to go. But I think I have found a rebuilt one in ChCh for $250......failing that I might try and get one from Aussie. I will post more photos as work progresses. My other project.....not a subbie
-
Hi what colour is yours as I haven't heard of any in Dunedin with the EJ22 till now. Do you know of any power steering racks around that will fit in the Brumby?
-
My 83 Brumby that I have repainted and at present I'm fitting a EJ22 and 5spd d/r gearbox with centre diff lock. The bonnets painted black because its not straight enough to paint with gloss paint.
