I don't love the automatic to spend $75 to make it work again, I have a complete 5speed, driveshaft, rear end, and clutch setup sitting in the back of my garage. A pedal box will run me way less than $75 and much easier to get ahold of, at that point, I may as well just put a 5speed in. BUT, if I can I'd like to keep the auto, so long as it doesn't cost me anything, etc.

Will do, that may help minimally. It's seized up tight enough the starter can't turn it.. How will this help anything? It died very quickly due to a very fast oil leak, most likely a rod bearing or two is completely seized up. I doubt a piston is stuck in the cylinder. But if one is, some abuse with a hammer should destroy the ringlands and break it loose. Some of the bolts to do this are behind the flex plate, so not really an option. As I said, I'd sooner put a 5speed in, I'm looking for options here that don't mean pulling the transmission apart. It's a rust free rolling shell... Worth putting a drivetrain into, just want a way to save what I have in there now. I don't know where you are, but in Maine that's pretty much unheard of.

The other thing... Even if I pull the engine out with the torque converter still attached (assuming I don't destroy it in the process), the torque converter will still be stuck to the engine with no good way of getting it off. And since I'll need my torque converter back to use the transmission, I'll still have to cut up the engine to get it off.

A fluid change made my 98 stop shifting hard into 2nd and made decently bad torque bind completely go away. Pulling the pan isn't too bad.

Seeing as this blew up two days before a move from ME to NC I probably won't see the car for a fairly long time. And even if I do go back to ME in like febuary it's too cold to do this stuff ... If it comes to pulling the TQ out (which I'm not going there). I'll just drop a 5speed in... I don't really love the automatic anyway, just that it works really nicely so for easy of not swapping, I kept it. Maybe I'll take angle grinder to engine or something... It'll be exciting, I can't wait.

I have no idea how that's going to work... I suppose when I get back to maine some day I'll figure something out, maybe do a 5speed swap while I'm at it...

So the engine (ej22 swap) ended up being stupid and seizing in my Legacy. Since I've moved and the car is sitting, I won't get to it for a while. But I was musing... How the hell am I going to get the engine out? It's seized right up, so how do I get to the TQ bolts? Do I take a jack hammer to the engine and break it into little bits or something?
-
It is a very robust transmission, the one in my Legacy has 242k miles on it and has outlived two engines. The engine in it currently is seized, which is going to make it really special trying to replace.....
-
But some of that varnish might be sealing it up and keeping it working... Maybe it's just that I'm afraid of automatic transmissions. But I get the feeling with them that if they work right, change the fluid and run it... maybe someone else will chime in and say fix something that's not broken...

Does your transmission currently work? If it doesn't have any problems, I wouldn't mess with it other than just a fluid change.

Salvage titles for minor damage! Argh!!!

These cars book at such a low value it's not worth fixing them to the insurance company. In it's current condition of rust holes, mix'n'match body panels, dents, etc it's probably only worth $200 at the very most. If a truck threw a rock at the windshield I bet the insurance would try to tell me it was a total loss... -
Mine is 66cc two-stroke. 49cc is legal to ride with no registration as long as it has pedals, I doubt any cop can tell a 66c from a 49cc engine... It'll get up to about 45 on a flat stretch and hold it just fine, I've done a lot of work to the motor to balance it, make it flow nicely, etc. So very little vibration. A friend of mine calls it a chainsaw on wheels, which is pretty much what it sounds like.

Question about replacing a Cv axle on 89 GL-10
987687 replied to Subieguy's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Napa axle left me stranded 600 miles into an 1100 mile roadtrip... I got one the next day at a napa near by and it clicked right out of the damn box. Finished the move on it, but grr. That kind of thing is annoying. -
Not today, but on Tuesday I changed an axle out in a parking lot of a town I'd never been in before... Axle failed on a road trip, and I fortunately ended up in a good place to find a napa and get parts to fix it. Picture of my workspace complete with my motorized bicycle which I'm very glad I brought.

Anyone want to get a FREE VIN check?
987687 replied to Idasho's topic in Old Gen.: 80's GL/DL/XT/Loyales...
Well, my mileage only shows as 9000something... But I don't understand the registration history. Shouldn't there be a line for each year it was re-newed? I'd look at my legacy's VIN, but it's 1200 miles away from me with a blown engine right now.. -

I was kind of hoping that mine had a terrible title history with lots of theft and whatnot... It's not like anything on a title check is going to reduce the value of a beat to hell rusted out GL... -

The last reported ODO reading on my 89 GL is 9,884 on december 15 1989. AND apparently it was always only ever registered in Maine, which conflicts with the story that it came from texas.... But does explain the rust.... do you guys get a line for every time the registration was re-newed? Because I have a big hole between 89 and 95, it would be weird of someone bought a brand new car and took it off the road for 6 years. -
Because the ea82 bottom end is actually pretty decent considering it's closed deck, and MUCH lighter than an EJ. So for a very small plane, light is a must.
