  1. I currently have two hella 500s on the front, with two more to come. So I can see where I'm going on a dark night. The car is great because it's so light, it's easy to get out if I get it stuck. I've used a come-along on the front and one on the rear to drag it sideways out of a ditch. It can make it up my ungodly steep driveway with 2+ feet of really heavy sticky snow with no issue at all. Living in Maine, I haven't come across any wintery road that it couldn't traverse.
  2. Nice car! I like your mod list, modest, reasonable and you'll get good gains from all that. Some kids come on here with these cars and want to do EJ swaps and 4 feet lift right off the start. And then complain when they don't know how to do any of it. I want to find a body in nice shape like that so I can swap all the stuff from my lifted sedan into it.
  3. Sounds like your alternator is dead. When you start the car if the battery idiot light and brake light stay on, something is wrong with the charging system. I've driven on a dying alt till the bitter end trying to get home. And systems start just shutting down one by one like you described.
  4. Just wondering because sometimes if I'm in the absolute middle of nowhere in Maine, the only option is 87...
  5. Bet they're in good shape when you find them though. I'm gonna be moving down to NC for a while. I just hope it doesn't break. Finding parts, esp used parts might be really hard.
  6. I probably wouldn't weld there anyway. Too high a risk of setting the car on fire. I'd use that glue stuff for gluing cars together.
  7. Would the engine be mad about getting 87?***Or would it just retard timing and be fine? I wanna build a franken beast. Just thinking about what if I loan the car to someone and they put crap gas in it...
  8. What you're calling metal sealer on the plug threads is probably anti-seize. Lucky the last mechanic put it there. If they were that tight, without it, you'd probably have ripped the threads out of the heads. Since the cyls on one side are low, timing belt could be an issue. Before you condemn the cyl with zero pull the valve cover to make sure it isn't something stupid like a broken valve spring. Relatively easy fix compared to say, a bent/burned valve. Ringlands, etc.
  9. Pretty much the same here. Some states are required to have a front plate, some aren't. In the states that don't need a front plate, they don't care what you put on front. The states that need a front plate want you to have the front one there, but for the most part don't care if you add additional plates. I'm in a state that requires a front plate, but I have nothing on front... They've never given my crap for it. So depending on where you are, they may or may not care. I live in the boonies, I assume in a city they'd care more.
  10. Both my GL and my legacy do that when it rains really hard.... I should investigate.
  11. How did you find out there's no oil passages in the head gaskets? External lines would suck. Ever had an egr tube not want to come off??
  12. Bearings will seize up surprisingly quickly when they run out of lubrication.
  13. Why should a car not last over 300k miles? My 98 has 240k, and the motor has over 300. It was completely worth putting a new timing belt on. Because now I have a car to drive around...
  14. The 90-95 2.2 heads are dual port. So if you're using a phase1 block you should find a set of those heads. You'll have more options for exhaust, and better flow.
  15. all the phase1 (90-most 98) should have the same bore. they just changed the piston design.
  16. She IS right... The seats in subarus don't up high enough.... The newer ones are actually a lot better in that regard. The seats are wicked uncomfortable though...
  17. I got a REALLY nice 2nd gen sedan for $400. All it needed was an engine and some other small things like brake job, and some really cheap easy stuff. All told, I have around $700 into it, car + parts. So the deals are out there, just keep on looking.
  18. As long as the auto works well now. Take care of it. It will outlast a 5speed. The ej22 will outlast most other motors. And with the auto you can lock it in 4wd and get the same thing as the loyalle.
  19. I said vtec because I couldn't remember what subaru calls their dual valve timing system. AVCS or whatever it is.
